I had something like that happen, it was the 1980s and steroid abuse in the gym was rampant. One of the people in the gym won a national body building competition and he was there with a half dozen other body builders. They took over the gym, grabbed all the benches and put them in their area. I did everything that didn't require a bench when they decided to flex in the mirrors, I moved one of the benches to the edge of their area to work out with since no one was around. Mr. National Champion comes running up on me from across the gym, you're stealing our bench. I tried to be reasonable and explain I just wanted to do my couple of lifts while they were admiring themselves in the mirror (I used more polite terms). The other guys had me surrounded. I was 145 pounds and 7 body builders all 250 were trying to come up with an excuse to beat me up. I noticed that the real big guy in the gym, probably a foot taller than Mr National but similarly built, tried to get my attention and gave me a meaningful look. He and 4 of his friends were working out nearby and they all moved into position behind the guys encircling me. I thought it wasn't fair this was happening because of me so I played my one remaining card and told Mr National "You know what I think?" "No!" "I think you're only wanting to fight me because you have 6 of your friends with you". The guys who were looking to help me, they were standing right behind the guys encircling me, when they threw their hands up and tried to back up they found these guys who weren't going to move for them. I got up on the balls of my feet and tucked in my chin but kept my hands down expecting to have to take a punch but I think he realized that the crowd was turning against him. He looks around real quick and I ask if it makes sense that I would mess with him and 6 of his bodybuilding friends that probably averaged 100# of muscle more than me. His head was vibrating, not sure if it was an act or if I got him that mad but he's still flat footed and has his chin up, not that I had any expectation more than either taking his punch and renegotiating or maybe use my weight to my advantage and pop him and run. He said something like don't let it happen again and grabbed the bench and moved it back to their area. The real big guy gave me a look of confusion mixed with concern that I might be insane.

@@RFSpartan I thought I could outrun them if I saw some day light but they had me against the equipment and surrounded. I'd just finished my workout too, aside from one or two sets I needed a bench to do. The five guys that came to help, one was the older and huge guy and the others looked like they could be basketball players; all well above 6 foot and thin but well built like they ran a lot. They didn't seem too afraid, I think maybe they weren't happy with them before all that happened.

I was friends with them and I remember how proud they became to be Chinese right after Bruce Lee got popular and it was suddenly "cool" to be an Asian, and after that, they got popular at school. I was so happy for them that they finally had a big "star" of their own in Hollywood, and he happened to be the best - ever. We watched Enter the Dragon like 50 times in a row. What he did in this movie is not a martial art either 😂 It is some comedy style acrobatics in the Jacky Chan's style. Martial arts practitioners are dangerous in their ability to avoid unnecessary energy spending. Just watch some MMA fights and you will learn why they do not jump over an opponent who stupidly lunge at them. One hit on the unprotected temple is enough to knock out a man (and that's why nobody does this stupid lunge in MMA). But this movie is nothing more than a comedy 😉

Things I like about this scene: 1) No music or "soundtrack." Yeah, some sound effects, but nothing over the top. 2) It shows that there's more to martial arts than the "right moves." The mental acuity required is quite substantial. Predicting your enemy's moves through "tells," knowing when to evade and when to strike, using your enemy's moves to your advantage...the clarity of mind is truly a force to be reckoned with. 3) You don't look for the fight....but if the fight finds you, you only fight until the threat is stopped. You don't humiliate or punish.

This event never really happened but it was put in the film to demonstrate the type of racism Bruce faced in the U.S. The idiocy of it was the Bruce WAS a naturalized citizen. He was American because he was born in San Francisco but his parents moved to Hong Kong when he was a baby and that's where he grew up before coming back to the states. Bruce was as American as apple pie but all white people saw was some Chinese guy. One of the reasons that Bruce is so beloved was because he was willing to teach anyone, any race, any color. Like he once said, and I'm paraphrasing, we all are the same living under the same sky, but we just happen to look different.

Jason Scott Lee's physique was great in this movie. Strong, lean, agile and athletic. Yet most westerners are obsessed with getting as big as they can to feel tougher. Very few compete , its just a vanity thing and an insecurity thing. Most " fitness influencers" are not fit, just blown up muscle heads. We've lost the full stop on what is practical and efficient in body composition.
