Joe Hollis of Mountain Gardens gives us a short overview of Gynostemma pentaphyllum, otherwise known as Jiaogulan. Jiaogulan has many of the same medicinal properties as Ginseng. To learn more, visit www.mountaingardensherbs.com
RIP Joe. I just wanted to thank you for introducing me to Gynostemma Pentaphyllum. I have been making tea daily with this plant and already notice the positive effects.
I started using gynostemma & rhodiola last year. hard to explain what these adaptogens do to your body. All I can say is that these plants are amazing medicines.
By any chance did you buy them from him ? I spoke with him when I called him last year and he was very nice and I can't believe I forgot all about him and his products but with several deaths and the family and so many problems I now have a chance to breathe and I'm just glad I found him and his channel again so that I can start ordering his wonderful organic teas and Healers
I ordered some from China and after using I am absolutely convinced of its value. I ordered seeds sometime after that and I'm starting some now, hope to see it growing soon!
@@tjfrost5355tj , please can you tell us if you recall the name of the company from China that you bought it from ? Can you please tell me if it was sweet tasting or bitter because all I have from the Chinese groceries is the type that is bitter . Is there any way you can explain to us why you feel it was a very powerful tea ?
Thank you so very much for sharing this important Information Joe. I've ordered two kinds of this 'poor man's ginseng'. Was able to share this video with a friend who is recovering from cancer. (-:
I just received the Jiaogulan seeds I ordered from you, and I'm excited to start growing this healthful vine. Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge!
Tracked down the seeds from a rare herb business here in Australia, and will be planting the seeds tomorrow. Fingers crossed. Thank you for your wonderful video.
Nancy , do you still drink the immortality tea and if so can you tell me if you feel it has slowed down aging of you in any way at all including aging of the brain or skin ? Also do you have the type that is sweet or do you have the type that is bitter tasting ... ?
Joe, thanks you are the greatest herbalist you are extremely knowledgeable and i really enjoy your videos too. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge . I will start to use some of the herbs you talked about. Bless you!
I think I love you. My most humble thanks for the wisdom from that Exquisite brain of yours, my appreciation to you all the way across the oceanic expanse of the south pacific seas here in Aotearoa, N.Z.
But are you 100% sure it is THAT plant ? Things can look identical just like the problem with mushrooms but one can be good for you and the other could be poisonous or just not effective
Joe Hollis is my plant-Mage. Love him o much! I just got 8 plantlets of Jiaogulan, will plant them in pots az I don't have a garden. So looking forward to them to grow strong and long and full of leaves. Once it is established and starts giving I am planning to dry some for tea and make a tincture as well.
Hey Joe, where you goin with that plant in your hand Bu ba pa da pa da ta. Seriosuly though, thanks for posting this video Joe. i resonate with your style my friend and greatly appreciate the sharing of the knowledge. Best wishes to you and yours!
Interesting. Are the small fruits and flowers also edible? Which parts are most potent? Which growing conditions boosts the health promoting ingredients? Is it considered an invasive species anywhere perhaps?
I live in a tropical country, it makes 40 degrees Celsius in the afternoons, and I ask for guidance how many times a week I must water the Jiaogulan, I appreciate the help. I do not leave sun straight on it and it planted in a very airy place without the sultriness of the heat, but I have difficulties in finding the right amount of water.
I just got a few small plants from a guy in Oregon (I am in FL) and it is doing so well right off the bat! I can see I am going to need a second or even third above ground bed and some trellis for it to spread. Save the telomeres! lol
I live in a tropical country with hot sun, pus anti screen 50% sun in my jiaogulan, should I put another one another 30% ?? I planted it in large pots, in the first foliage were many leaves, but now in the second foliage is very little ... how do I get back to have more leaves? The earth is fertilized and every day I pour water, grateful.
I could hear Joe Hollis for hours! All the amazing knowledge and lovely energy 🌞⚡💛 Can you tincture this plant? And if so, is the medicine stronger when tinctured fresh or dried? And finally, what ratio is best for menstrum x plant material? 🙏
I'm pretty sure you can tincture most plants at least that's what I was led to believe by somebody I spoke to some years back and she claimed that she teaches people how to make tinctures somewhere here in the Dallas area but I can't remember where
Yes, you can tincture this plant. I would recommend tincturing dried plant material (~15 - 20% RH) to reduce the amount of water and increase the concentration of medicinal compounds in the final product. Hope that helps!
Looking for help. My plants were mild and sweet when first planted over a year or 2 ago. This year, the plant looks fabulous and healthy but is nasty bitter straight from the vine. Not drinkable! Is there something that can be done to get the mild taste back?
-Would anybody be able to tell me.......will it lower blood pressure? -My mother has bouts of SEVERE Low Blood Pressure I think one was 56/70. -I'd like to help her health, this herb sounds good BUT I need to make sure it DOESNT lower Blood Pressure. Thank you Jiaogulan
I've had my little cutting for about 3 weeks and the leaves are growing downward and in almost like in a ball like shape. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Any pointers? My pot too small maybe?
like 20+ year ago we couldnt have them in our garden but coz climatic change we can grow them. Its frost harden till -15 degree celsius. In past we had few days in wintertime when we get -20 degree. Now we rarely even getting more then -10... Greetings from Germany
I am in Denmark, Bornholm island in the Baltic Sea, and I have had them growing in a (pretty tall, wooden) container for two winters now :) It is thriving, and I am going to make some cuttings to make more plants, to grow under/on my tall old trees.
Great educational vide!...Thank you. i wanted to ask you a ? i was at a local tea & herb house (called Bird Pick). i had a couple of Yerba Mate drinks...one with Gynostemma and a shot of concentrated Gynostemma. It was the 1st time i've ever had it. The ? is coming up...a great calm came over me & i was very focussed...but the lights in the place and even at far distances became brighter. When i left and went on the freeway...the lights of the cars and signs were very bright. i also had a an enhanced sense of smell. Is this normal or have you ever heard of anything like this before? Henry
If you haven’t been able to find jiaogulan that isn’t bitter, try ordering from Holy Mountain Tea company. That’s where I first saw and tried it, and I haven’t found a better one.
Mr. Hollis, may I ask if I could use this as a decorative for some trees as well? I was thinking of using it as a decorative for a few trees, to naturalize it in my native woods and to grow as a tea making plant.
I helped clear a bunch of jiaogolan at Mountain Gardens last year... trying to raise some in central Texas but it’s yellowing. I’ve changed the amount of water; is it too much sunlight?
arm Animals 1 second ago Does this plant turns leaves red in autumn, as i have them so much and they are so invasive, that i have to tier them down from my fruit trees and bushes every year, as i didn't know that they have some health benefits. But they look very beatiful in autumn as a fence.

Just wondering whatever happened with you growing the immortality plant and was it successful ? You can email or call this gentleman well at least I did a year and a half ago but I don't know if he's still alive but I am going to try to call him this week
I've tried 81 seeds so far with no luck, are there any suggestions to get it to grow at home? what are the light, soil, etc... requirements to get the seeds to germinate?
I wonder, if we can grow it in the pots as a house plant? Would it have healing properties, if not grown in the ground (as its roots wouldn't go as deep?)
The medicine is from the plant's organic chemistry, not soil minerals, though doubtless the health of the plant will influence the dosage of chemicals it produces.
Recently you said it was discovered by the chinese government when they were looking into centurians, now you say it was a japanese research team. Which was it?
