Have you ever wondered how gypsum can improve your soil so you can grow healthier plants? In this episode of SoiLab, Matt performs an experiment and shows the science behind how Gypsum can improve salt affected soils. If your soil test recommends gypsum, or you have a high sodium levels, be sure to watch this video to understand its importance and how it works.

Also nice to include kg/m2 for those outside USA.

Thanks for watching! The rate is 3.5 tons per acre which is equivalent to approximately 0.86 Kg/m2

Can you do an experiment where sodium is introduced to the soil by sodium hypochlorite from roof washing and how gypsum or lime can protect the plants at drip edges and downspouts from heavy salt exposure?

Since gypsum moves salts, could you use gypsum to spot treat animal urine/scat spots in your yard?

Gypsum doesn't move salts. Water moves salts. Gypsum enables water to move through soil more easily. If you already have good drainage, just flush the urine with water.

Hello Matt, First, THANK YOU for taking QUALITY TIME to present science in facts and numbers. I’m glad to visit your channel while struggling to fight my backyard clay soil. Your presentation raise questions and possibly gives idea for future videos. My first question or clarification I need is: a clay may or may NOT have sodium (“sodic”)? Am I understanding this correctly? Or could you please describe are there studies that quantify what percent of clay soil are also high in sodium? My backyard soil is almost perfectly clay soil, and by trial and error finally getting to know about miracle of “gypsum”! However if I understand correctly, if my clay soil is low in sodium, then, gypsum can’t do much to loosen my soil.

I am sold to gypsum ❤❗ Thank you for the experiment, this helped tremendously, it had been recommended but wasn't sure what it did to the ground, this CLEARED my questions. THANK YOU again ❗️

The color of the water is likely due to the size of the new clumps of soil particles being larger with the very large Ca atom in the middle of each. They arent passing through the filter paper as easily/readily.

But, shall it work on low pH soil?

I want to grow cannabis in 50/50 (peat moss / perlite). If I add 0.5tsp of gypsum and about 1TS of lime to 10l pot, is that adequate?
@losclaveles
@losclaveles 11 месяцев назад
Dude, lime is not gypsum. Lime will raise your PH, which you probably do not want to do unless you have really acidic soil. Gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate) will, as shown in the video, causes soil particles to flocculate (gather together), acting like larger soil particles, allowing more water infiltration. If your mix is 50% perlite, you ALREADY have great drainage.

He said in a different video that gypsum doesn't really affect ph of soil.
