This may very well be the best video of its kind I've come across. Very well explained . Thanks for being upfront and honest on what you understand and don't understand. I started gardening earlier in the spring season and these types of videos are a gem. You know I hear people talk about green thumb versus no green thumb but I've always said that there's no such thing. As long as you understand the science behind growing a plant. The algorithm directed me here because I've noticed some blossom end rot on a couple of my watermelons. I've ruled out water issues because I've invested in a drip watering system. I have some calcium carbonate on hand but I was looking for a way to free up the Ca from the Co3. Chemistry is cool 😆
I added lime for the first time this year to raise the ph since I put in a lot of peat moss. Did not know I was adding in calcium and other micronutrients, so this is very good news.

I done a lot of research on dolomite lime and magnesium and calcium and PH correction which corrects the right PH for the plant that it requires whether slightly acid or slightly alkaline but for a good PH for plants is neutral. I am listening to you. you seem to know your stuff well. Thank you.
Oh I just noticed you said gypsum changes pH in above question. Gypsum does not change pH btw. Lime or calcium carbonate does. Anyway, the amount is hard to say without knowing your goals and soil pH. Try looking up pound or kilograms per square foot to change pH. Something more farmers would use.
yes, Roma's is one varietal im having bad issues with, that one is in a container. actually I just read that from a customer of urs in an older post. first appeared on Rutgers in a container. what's got me baffled is it is showing on my lowest and first tomatoes in my beds. brandywine, Kellogg's orange beefsteak and red beefsteak. I planted them in may with amendments of compost, fertilizer, epsom and the organic garden lime.

The two mixed release minerals you mentioned (Garden Gypsum and Garden Lime) are nothing more than the basic form that has had another chemical pr process added to partially break it down into its basic elements so you don't need to wait for the soil to do it. It's much like when you pour the vinegar into eggs shells to break it down so the plants can readily use it. Also there are other forms of calcium, like chalk, diluted spoiled milk, water used to boil eggs, expired calcium pills/tablets, etc.

Hi. Blossum end rot is caused by pot containers getting too dry usually from being too hot and drying up all the fine roots on your plant - the same roots that absorb the calcium out of the soil. That is why pot planted tomatoes so often gets the blossom end rot. Tomatoes like their roots to be cool and moist. Adding more calcium can bring the plant back to producing more tomatoes that do not have the rot.

Hello Gary, (I realize this is an older video but I got hooked on your channel this year building a grow light setup in February.) Just a comment on limestone having trace minerals and different chemical makeups. Once limestone is exposed (geologically speaking), it can absorb chemicals from both the atmosphere and whatever rainwater/groundwater environment is around. So I suspect some of these products are perhaps quarried from different regions, and processed in different ways; perhaps for pulverizing or sterilization. Building limestone has long been differentiated by area; Indiana limestone, for example, being known for exceptional quality/durability.

So much great information Gary. I put in New raised beds this year, and the top soil and humour mix was quite deficient. even after adding some compost and not enough organic n p k, I found myself scrambling to save this year's garden. I am not an organic gardener, but I do use mostly organic. but this year I used Miracle Grow to save the garden. later I used garden lime and more compost with pretty okay results.
Everything is a chemical as is the world. I don't worry so much for fertilizer. I go organic first followed by human assisted as needed. I add in compost etc. That approach works well. You never know what you might need. Wise use is key.
I also use micro grow tomatoe plant food and for calcium I use hi yield calcium nitrate. My squash plants leaves started to turn yellow when I added the miracle grow plant food and the calcium nitrate my plants are greener than before.

Balancing the PH in the soil is essential to most crops. If you wish to keep up the growth of your plants you can balance the PH with dolomite and it will not be excessive and requiring more changes like adding fertilizer to make the PH more acid. Tomatoes need an acid soil. Other plants need a PH balanced to neutral.
Very nice as well as very important information for the farmers to apply natural micro nutrient which are available in our contry,'state like M.P.,Raj,Guj,Mah,Bihar&so many state. Thank you so much such a beautiful and informative agriculture micronutrients knowledge for the farmers especially Indian farmers. Yeah, surprised you didn’t mention calcium nitrate and calcium chloride. Also surprised you didn’t mention Epsom salts and the myth that it provides a source of calcium. It actually competes with the update of calcium. Appreciate it if you could talk about the above topics as well.
@@marcnaidu5804 well, perhaps the myth is due to them needing each other. In humans, calcium must be taken with magnesium to facilitate uptake. Perhaps someone added Epsom and their situation improved because the magnesium in the salts allowed calcium absorption. Just a thought. 🤔

I put a lot of gypsum in my garden to soften the soil, but so far it doesn't seem to be softening much. Maybe next spring will show some softening and some breaking up clumps of clay.
I see the recommended amount for Ca Nitrate is 1 1/2 to 2 Tablespoon per gallon of water. I guess the idea is to not get the solution on the tomato stems. Keep it about 4 to 6 inches away. In my pots, that would be around the inside rim with a 48oz water pitcher. Maybe 24 oz per plant at first. Last year only my upper most fruits got BER. They weren't very large in mid August so I wasn't overly conserned. As early fruits set and get larger I will give a bit of Nitrate Ca and see what happens. My bag is 4 pounds for just under 15 bucks. Bob

I have a garden lime I just bought the other day and mix it in with a gallon of water and about two handfuls and watered my plants and no more blossom and rot already? Gary you did not mention that you need to add lime to avoid club root in brassicas. Lime is also used to break down heavy clay soil. You could also mention that for some plants lime addition must be avoided (in order to not kill the plant) such as the ericaceous plants such as camellia, pieris, rhododendrons, heathers, blueberries and cranberries. the magnesium oxide and calcium oxide is just there to give an ideal of how much is available to the plant, in the same way P205 gives an ides of how much phosphorus is available in phosphate products, or in other words magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate are present in the mixture, whilst their oxide are not but is used in the chemical analysis.

Thanks for posting these excellent source of information about nutrients for gardening. I have a question about nutrients for use in hydroponics. I set up a 'dutch bucket system' for growing tomatoes for the first time this year and have had excellent results with tomatoes. The only problem I see is a few cases of blossom end rot, particularly in Roma tomatoes. The system feeds the same nutrient water to all the twelve plants in my small system, but the blossom end rot is only in Roma tomatoes and none in any other types. I have been adding Calcium Nitrate, in addition to other nutrients, in the water, but am wondering why only the Roma tomatoes are showing this problem and none of the others are. I am wondering if the amount or the rate of Calc uptake is different for different types of tomatoes, and adding more of Calc. Nitrate would help solve this problem Thanks for any insights on this.
chandra0102 If you have calcium nitrate you can make a quart bottle spray and spray the leaves of the Roma's. Some varieties the the San Marzano are just more prone to BER.

Diatomaceous earth is a great example of a dirt cheap product marked up to insane prices. What's more surprising to me is the (almost) complete lack of information available online regarding DE as a silica source. I had to dig into research papers before I was able to find any answers about whether it was plant available or not. Turns out it is, which saves a bunch of money. Another great example of the Green Tax is amino acid products. Most of them are either soy protein hydrolysate, or a mixture of glutamine/glycine. None of these ingredients are hard to find nor expensive when purchased as supplements. Miracle Gro Organic water soluble fertilizers also use soy protein hydrolysate as the primary Nitrogen source, so paying 10 bucks for 1lb of Miracle Gro fertilizer is way cheaper than the $100+/lb amino specialty products.
i have blossom end rot on tomatoes and pulled up some squash plants that had some foamey looking stuff underneath. didnt know what to do so mixed up some milk water and doused Everything. then , i saw this video. oops!
I also wanted to let you know I used the organic Garden lime in all my planting holes of my raised beds and containers in the end of April early May and I am now battling blossom end rot with a few of my container and raised bed tomatoes, so I would probably say this is slower time release lime than a fast acting lime I'm a little disappointed actually.

I do have a San marzano in that one lol. the irony is last year I did container gardening only no issues with ber except second round of red peppers real bad but fast acting lime fixed it right up. this year much bigger garden though. love watching u, have learned a ton from u:)
+Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) so I'm gathering from watching ur nutrient videos that what I used is all slow released and the fast released fertilizers that the plants can use now are water soluble. I do have liquid grow by Miracle-Gro 9 4 9 and the jobes organic water soluble u have. I did use a good potting mix with fertilizer for my containers though. I'll tell u it is definitely a science and u will spend a lot of time trouble shooting lol.
Having consulted 2 different soil analysis labs regarding gypsum's ability to alter soil's compaction, I was told that the addition of gypsum will NOT lower the pH of my food plot's soil. There appears to be a conflict here which I am not fully understanding. The sulfur element in an of itself can contribute to lowering pH, but in the form of a sulfate it has little effect. Were the labs wrong?
I could have mis spoke in the video on pH and gypsum. Gypsum doesn't not raise it. How often should you use the Garden Lime in tomato pots and peppers? I've read to ammend the soil the first few inches down in established pots? Thanks!
@Gary Pilarchik. The video is well explained but you made a little mistake, it seem to me that Gypsum (Calcium Sulphate) containing sulphate ions binds with Aluminum ions in acidic soils to form Aluminum Sulphate thereby neutralizing excess acid which was the result of Aluminum ions before the bonding. Which mean gypsum does not lower PH but neutralizes acid which intern raise PH. Sulphate ions are a source of Sulphur nutrition for crops which does not acidify soil.
If you can do a video on why I’m not getting any female flowers on my huge cucumber plant that would help this is the second year in a row I can’t grow cucumbers? Straight eights variety, may be time to change variety? In NJ
Hi Gary. I would like to ask how much gypsum can I add to my 5 gallon pot of soil for tomato as calcium supplement? Also for cucumber too. One more thing. Can I use any type of gypsum such as Classic Stone Pulverized gypsum (garden soil softener) from Home Depot? Thank you Gary.
I believe you can use any gypsum. It is best added early but really just a handful in a planting hole for the bigger plants is plenty. If they are in the ground, scatter a few handfuls around the surface of the garden bed. In 5 gallons, 1 handful mixed will is plenty. Hi Gary! I've been watching your videos and been finding them helpful. I bought the same type of dolomitic garden line shown in the center in this video. Is this something that I can use to make a lime slurry as seen in one of your other videos for emergency calcium deficiency problems? My plants haven't started fruiting yet up here in Minnesota, but some of my peppers that have been out for a month are showing signs of calcium problems (new leaves are yellowish and starting to curl upward). So I want to get them help quick. Will making a lime slurry out of that garden lime help? Also, if I mix up some lime slurry, can I store it and use it over time or do I need to use it right away for it to remain effective? Thanks for all your videos, they've been so helpful

Hi Gary, Greetings, Thank you for posting very interesting and informative videos. I watch and educate my self & find them quite useful. I have an enquiry. May be you can help me. I have a Gul Mohar tree (Delonix regia) over hanging my small vegetable patch which constantly sheds tiny fern-like leaves and flowers into my patch. I suspect that these leaves are Allelopathic to other growth. Is it true & if yes what is the solution. Thanks
+Vijay Bharthiae Hmmm. I am not familiar with that tree. We have a tree that does that through its root system. I think the best thing to do is ask at a local nursery. I cant think of example of a tree that leaves do that.

I have a pool and regularly add CaO with water becomes CaOH. Would not a tablespoon of CaO in a gallon of water be a quick acting source of calcium? Soluble, inexpensive and quick acting.
I have looked everywhere trying to find out how much Garden Lime to add to a new 20 gallon containers and how often afterwards. I am only growing in this type tube and its a self wicking tub so I am watering every 7 days when the water is low in the tub. I cant find the answer anywhere. PS- I only water thru a 1" PVC pipe that reaches the bottom of the tub and it wicks up (no holes in the bottom).
Just bough half a kilo of lime on a whim and wondering whether I need it and how to use it. I heard it's good to add to clay soil. Won't it raise the pH too much for tomatoes and peppers?

Hi Gary! Thanks for the information and great video. I am currently battling blossom end rot with my tomatoes in my raised beds. Should I use both lime and gymsum and if so how much? Or would the lime slurry be the best bet? I was wondering have you made a video with what you put in the planting holes when you plant? I appreciate all the information!
+sisounthone thongthep I think you can use Tums no problem. I don't see why you couldn't pulverize tablets. But you do have to know what else might be in the tablets you use.
