Erm, her mother was abusive and yes she was insane. However, it is still a crime to get your boyfriend to stab your mother countless times. Of course she was desperate but that doesn't negate the crime nor the responsibility. She was clever enough to realise getting someone else to actually physically kill her mum would mean she'd get out of jail sooner, and she was also clever enough to manipulate and lie to him and then turn against him in court. It's not black and white, good and bad. Everyone right now has to make people either a hero or a villain, and life generally isn't like that. Nor are humans. Both her and her mum committed crimes. They are both culpable. Releasing her while the guy serves a life sentence is unjust in my opinion.

The thing is self defense is typically legally permissible, but retaliation is not. Even Gypsy Rose said in an interview from prison that her mother didn’t deserve to die she deserved to be where she was (in prison). We can all agree that what her mother did was horrible. Her mother needed psychiatric help. Gypsy was and still is very intelligent and has a manipulative side. Gypsy got time because she orchestrated the murder to happen and did so while her mother was asleep vs orchestrating an escape to the authorities. Also, for those that didn’t see her interrogation, Gypsy lied to the police and acted like she didn’t know her mother was murdered and kept denying she had anything to do with it or any knowledge of it. She gasped and asked did she commit suicide. Those things didn’t help her case. We have to stop running with narratives and research things for ourselves in totality.

That’s not self defence, that’s premeditated. Planning the murder of her mother was not her only option. That’s why she was sentenced.

Even if she was technically well into her twenties, she still had many things to learn that a normal 20 year old would already know, especially life experiences and lessons that she didn’t get the chance to experience because of the trap she was in.
