There is a consistent level of gyroplane take off and landing accidents which I’ve heard many instructors say you can't prevent because “you can’t do much to stop people having brain fade”.
I would agree where someone just simply does the wrong thing rather than what he/she has been taught. Perhaps on take off a pilot fails to bring the stick back during the take off ground roll or hasn’t pre-rotated to a high enough value.
I’ve given you some examples last month of the kind of snags that exist in the take off phase. This film we look at landings and this is an area where the problem is poor technique, which is a training issue.
The most common gyroplane landing accidents can be prevented by doing the basics well and consistently.
1. Make your circuits consistent
2. Fly a consistent approach speed
3. Trim
4. Make sure you trim
5. Did I mention trim yet?
6. Have a plan regarding your decision height - to mean if you are not either directionally stable and speed stable OR the runway isn't available / you have no clearance BEFORE this height you will go around.
7. If you get unstable before touchdown - you will go around - never force a landing out of every approach
8. Remember gyroplanes are very sensitive to yaw and drift - if you keep forcing a landing with yaw and drift apparent at some point you will not get away with it [it also means being aggressive with power changes during the float will promote yaw change]
9. After landing remember to manage the energy in your rotors - my advice is to stop and allow the RRPM to decay significantly before taxiing
Give yourself the best chance and stay safe.
The critic of this pilot is nothing to beat up on him personally and hopefully the lessons will be valuable to him - it will certainly keep him safer.
Please note the pilot featured in this film is a new pilot and so (like us all) is happy to learn and for others to learn from him. Its a very noble and mature attitude and the video was used with his permission. Below is a link to his RU-vid channel which shows his overall competence is very good. I have to say I'm grateful to him and as I said to him:-
Everyone including all instructors I know make these mistakes or have made them - its just we didn't all film them and put them on RU-vid!

Enjoy your flying everyone! Blue skies Francis and thank you.

Excellent, and even to those of us with a gyro licence this still proves there is always something we can still learn and share.....

Bro your work is becoming more and more indispensable as the days go by... here's why ... I plan to own and fly a Gyro soon (in a few years) I am from Mangaluru a small town in India ... used to fly Microlight Trikes for a long time ...and done some stupid stuff and done some good stuff ... So videos like this will help immensely when I finally make that trip to a Gyro Flying School and say hello to my instructor ... I will be remebering these visuals then. Just so you know I learnt to fly by myself ... now that is NOT a brag ... it was the situation back then ... it is what it is ... have flown about 600 hrs .. 51 now ...stopped flying about 8 years back ... started when 17 or something. So you may not realize how valuable your videos are ... apart from my eternal gratitude I can't offer anything more for now.

Thank you for the kind comments. It’s an impressive feat to teach yourself to fly and still be here! Today there are some good opportunities to get instruction and you are welcome to contact me anytime for advice and all happily for free. My advice with a gyroplane is don’t venture out alone. Take instruction. Good luck with you adventure.

There is no gyroplane recognition by DGCA. I have heard that they have just possibly started to accept BCAR Sec T but not confirmed. India is still stuck in red tape at the government. Be careful and do not try your hand at flying the gyroplane without training with an instructor

What news Neville? Where are you now in your quest to get and fly a gyro? I’d say a lot of people would be interested to hear your progress👍!

@@nickybritain4900 LOL I am so happy for the reminder (not that I have forgotten) the dream lives on. I hope the present situation does not kill it. It's looking like that. But this kind reminder may have injected some hope into it!! 😊

He is still learning how to land. Although he didn't trim, came in too fast or too high he did a good job by keeping the aircraft under control.

I’ve learned from pilots, doctors, engineers that they think they are NEVER wrong. They also feel untouchable because they are stimulated by what they do each day and feel not like the rest of humanity. Only upon their deaths do they learn reality and while alive, they listen to no one and lack empathy for those they crush in their decision-making.

Good vid, great analysis. I wish there was more gyro training available in the Midwest US. My CFI is one of so very few that he has a student who comes all the way in from Iowa (my flight club is located at KRAC) for training. Curiously, my CFI is a very competent tailwheel pilot, and he actually described flying our club gyro as very similar to flying his personal Aeronca Champ...any thoughts on that?
@gyrocopterflyingclub6148
@gyrocopterflyingclub6148 4 года назад
It certainly takes some effort to learn to fly one! Yes similar in terms of selecting an attitude and allowing it to settle. I've no experience with a Champ but have flown a Piper Cub and used to own an aerobatic tailwheel called DR107 One design.

Well I was just surprised tbh as I wasn’t sure what the rational was - I suspect there was some thought to the quarry and trying to keep some height in case of engine failure?? But I think if that was the plan why not hold height until actually over the runway then do a vertical descent and land?? Seems they kind of had the bones of a plan but executed half of it as they got slow and the blast of power at the end was defiantly to cushion the landing. Ultimately I just think it was made harder work than it needed to be.

Pretty sure they’re practicing an engine out on this one. The engine is Cleary chopped before decent. Not sure if you should be reviewing this sort of content if you can’t pick that up.

@gyrocopterflyingclub6148
@gyrocopterflyingclub6148 3 года назад
Hey Phill - The not trimming on finals draws in quite a lot of opinion which broadly divides along two lines. You sometimes hear fixed wing pilots claim they don't trim so that the aircraft will always fly 'nose down' so that it effectively defaults that way and avoids a stall. Which is kind of a little school boy - you could also just trim accurately, fly accurately and avoid arm ache and the potential to float forever. I guess these pilots also add 10knts to the book approach speed just to stay safe? But anyway thats one view. The other view is they fly a Magni and therefore you don't need to trim [see that exact view from Owen a current UK examiner/instructor]. Sadly this is also wrong. The reason this view exists is because the people who believe it fly around at the exact same airspeed. The fly circuits at 60mph, they fly upper air exercises at 60, they fly transits at 60. So yes for the few who fly at one speed you may not need to re-trim, but who does that???!!! Maybe its the fixed wing pilots from the first example?

I miss flying on gyrocopter I bought appolo gyrocopter and just before my first solo flight my instructor crushd so I'm not sure sure if I get back on flying I'm not sure if I have the courage

I take it the flight didn’t go well and you got berated by your instructor. It’s no worries man. We all screw up pretty bad. If you feel like it’s something you want to get back into the saddle of, consider looking for a new new airport and new instructor.

Hes in a magni, so he wouldn't need to re-trim for his approach Phil.

Hello mate hope you’re well. Is the speed being flown consistent?
@gyrocopterflyingclub6148
@gyrocopterflyingclub6148 3 года назад
So to be clear this is fundamentally wrong - unless you fly your entire circuit at one speed. Now I know that can be the form for some instructors, but it does not prepare the student well for life post his local flying and / or PPL. Indeed I had a student email me many months ago to question this trimming point - and he said he never needs to trim, but then it turns out he just flies everywhere at 60mph.... That is not the way to prepare the student IMO and whilst it might be considered OK to fly around a microlight or farm strip circuit at 60mph if you do that at many common GA destination airfields you become a danger. Take a look at the film of one of Andy Jones students who is on a XC flight to Gloucester - it becomes very clear that he is totally outside of his usual comfort of Chiltern Park and the airspeed is all over the place on final whilst the downwind speed is circa 90mph to fit in with traffic.

Take a look at this film [Magni M16] ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1P9fWeU77rA.html From around 57mins we are near the destination airfield and not only do we see plenty of trimming but there 'ain't no flying around at 60mph.....

I went to your channel to read your "ABOUT" section which states in the first line: "Description: The Gyrocopter flying club is THE most popular gyrocopter resource channel on RU-vid." Are you serious? YT channel GyroGerald has 32k+ subs and far more hits, I'm sure there are others as well.

Not sure about the angst and yes GyroGerald channel is popular but it isn't a resource is it? i.e there is no commentary or instruction....

"TARMAC?" WTF! Where, in the Airport Directory (AD) or Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM), is the flippin' TARMAC? That's a stupid word made up by non-flyers to make them sound smart, like "eXpresso," "orientate" and "conversate."
