It’s more expensive because you only get a small amount from a horse. From a cow you can get many pairs of shoes. You need multiple shells to make a shoe. True. N S. The average cow produces 10+ pair of shoes and the average shell produces one in my size (11, not 16). Shell tans for 6-9 months and calf can be a few weeks on the high side. Hatch grain runs about the same price as shell because it takes so long to tan, and the super high end brands like G&G or EG only get 1-2 shoes from a cow hide. Hope that helps. Care of shell is much easier. Just condition and brush.
