In The UK they would be known as a Double Act who bring out the best in each other. Larry Gates would have been brilliant on Emmerdale as a Distant Relative of The Sugdens or even as The Dingle Family. His Ancestors last name was changed to Ingel at Ellis Island. William Roerick would have been perfect on Hollyoaks as a Distant Relative of Tony Hutchinson.
After the war my Oma moved to the us with her GI Husband! My Grandfather. She learned English be listening to GL on the Radio. 3 generations of women watched GL I wish my girls could of watched it with me😢 thanks for the memories!
I remember being so genuinely sad to lose HB. Funny how attached we get to these characters you spend so much time watching over a lifetime. Like your own family.
Oh, absolutely! We saw him all the time, and everyone else on the show really did know Larry Gates. Those are real tears. It's hard not to tear up, watching this.
I never saw HB’s service .. watching i forgot it was a soap Opera.. it felt so real. I miss soap operas and growing up with them . To be younger again. The closing of HB’s words are so true . They did an a job in this scene . Honor, dignity and integrity
My mother and I loved watching this soap opera and As the World Turns when they showed their last episode. These soap operas will be missed. This was a great tribute to HB Lewis and the actor who played the character.
@Anakin4570 I would watch these soap operas with my mom during the summer break from school. She passed away February 23 2012. My dad is still living in Arizona and his health is declining. These as well Search for Tomorrow and Edge of Night were also my mom's favorites.
H.B. Lewis....maaaaaan this episode let's you know how long ago this tragedy happened. My great-grandmother loved this soap opera and filled me in on H.B. Reva was so damn close to H.B. and everyone loved them some H.B. Lewis!!
Huge GL fan, but I missed this episode. HB and Henry made the show special. It was nice to see all those generations get together. They were two wise old men. Larry Gates was from old Hollywood as well. I remember him slapping Sidney Poitier during In the Heat of the Night, classic movie clip. He was also in a terrific episode of the original Twilight Zone. RIP to a great show!!!
I didn't like the Lewis and Shane's. Only Lewis I liked was Mindy. That storyline with her and Roger made me sick, though. She wasn't the same to me after that.
@@merricat3025 I wasn’t a fan of those families either. To me, they never felt like a good fit for the show, and it marked an awful turning point for Guiding Light, in my mind. (I started watching GL during the peak Roger Thorpe years, so a pretty high standard had been set.) I did enjoy HB’s unlikely friendship with Henry, and Mindy was good. The rest of them were a big reason I drifted away from watching.
A natural succesor to Ashley Pedlon, Kimberley J. Brown was truly the quintessential Marah. She set the tone of what this character should have been; instead, producers opted to go the blonde kittenish route when they SORASED the character. Marah was her father"s daughter, not a mini-Reva.
I AGREE WITH THIS COMMENT WHOLEHEARTEDLY. Kimberly McCullough (General Hospital) would have fallen more in line with what I would have envisioned Marah to be. I always thought of Marah as more of a Lewis. Daniel Cosgrove was perfect as adult "Lil' Billy."
@@canton731 I always envisioned Marah as growing up so turned off by her mother's antics that she relied less on her sexual instincts and more on her intellectual prowess, proving herself an acute businesswoman worthy of taking helm of the Lewis empire someday; she could also be a little self-righteous and judgemental towards her mother like Joshua could be, blaming her mother for much of the family drama through the years. Reva and Marah should always have been oil and water. Marah had to assume adulthood rather early in her life, making her more sensible, more responsible, more cautious than her mother could ever be. Instead of being boring, this would have given Marah more potential for romantic conflict than she had just by being the generic "blonde ingenue" in a typical young adult pairing. Much like Kathleen Cullen's Amanda, Marah should have been a little insecure about her sexual identity, fearing she would be like her mother, which would have set up years of bad romantic choices one after the other. Shayne, meanwhile, would have been the complete opposite: he should have been his mother's son: wild, impulsive, a desire for more-more-more. I liked Daniel Cosgrove as Bill, but I would have loved to have seen Bryan Huffinton grow in the part, just as Rachel Minor and Greg Burke should have been been allowed to grow into the roles of young adults Michelle and Ben. If the PTB had just allowed to let that new generation of family players that had been carefully established in the late 80s to evolve organically into the 21st century, things would have been so much different for Guiding Light.
@@tonyatmidnight I liked Bryan Buffington as the younger version of Little Billy only. It was like David Tom at Y&R; David was great as the teenager Billy Abbott but did not work for me as the adult Billy Abbott. Maybe it's because there was another actor in the role of Billy Abbott for years. I loved the Billy/MacKenzie pairing back in the late 1990's and I was also in the eleventh-twelfth grade in those years so I loved their teenager angst stories at that time. When DT returned to Y&R I was initially excited but I soon realized he wasn't right for the role anymore. I did not like Matt Bomer as Ben Reade at all and I would have loved to have seen the younger actor who portrayed the younger version of Ben Reade potentially grow in to the adult version of Ben Reade, I would have given him the chance. Bryan Buffington only worked as Little Billy, for me, as the child version of the character. Your version of Marah is a fleshed out version of my vision of Marah as well and that was the basis in which the character was built on in the late eighties to early nineteen-nineties. Don't forget that Marah also felt abandoned by Reva Shayne as well during her girlhood years. Billy Miller would have been perfect for me as Shayne Lewis. I loved Tom Pelphrey as Jonathan Randall. Guiding Light had so much talent there it was ridiculous.
@@canton731 I thought I was the only one who felt like that. Ryan Brown did his best but he just couldn't cut the Mustard as a Recast. It's amazing to know his Parents are literary icons.
@@dawnofdestruction7381 Yes. I told UK Soap Fans and they were stunned. She also went back and got her Degree in English. How classy is that. The UK Soap Fans loved Otalia. They called Frank Cooper "Frank The Wanker".
@@4021971 Yes, it happens. She could have had a Partner who was a "Woman" and see how Her Brothers would have reacted. Also Josh would be understanding since his Ex Wife is now a Lesbian.
I don't think those people were acting that were crying.. I think they REALLY got into the lady singing and cried real tears - I know I did!! What a spectacular version of a great old hymn!
Revisiting this episode. I see Hart #3, Dinah #2, Mindy #2 (and 4, today, with 2 in between, lol), Cassie #1, Blake #2, Alan #2, the original Peter, the orginal Bill, Marah #2, Shane #3, I think...Phillip #2....lol.
Hello RC! Hope all is Well and Safe! Thank You! GREATLY APPRECIATED the UPLOAD and VIDEO! This brought back good memories for me. A good time in my life. The vintage commercials were great watching them again!
I remember HB would read the story of the birth of Christ each Christmas. I also learned from HB about forgiveness. He didn't hate Reva and Josh. I learned that.
I didn't watch Guiding Light when Larry Gates was on The Show but what an amazing actor he was from these clips. The scene that made me fall in love with him was when Josh & Reva got married and Hampton "Hamp" Speakes arrived with some Friends and although they weren't "Invited" HB treated them like long lost friends. I thought "What an amazing Classy Guy, an Old School Southern Gentleman who was so charming". So much History. Probably The Last Time "All The Lewises" were together before Brian Buffington was let go as Bill Lewis #1, then Brian Gaskill played Dylan #2, then Morgan Englund working with Hart #5 which must have been surreal. I kind of felt bad for Hart knowing that Peter looked at Dylan as "Daddy" and not him, and then Vanessa lost any contact or communication with Peter after this. Wouldn't it be something if it were discovered that Trisha met A Woman and is now with her. Josh was so "Classy" as well introducing Blake as Ross's Wife although they were Divorced. If it were up to me Cece Winans would have sung. Her Brother Bebe went to Number One in the UK with A R & B Group called Eternal.
Also Bill was very lucky that both his Grandfathers got along so well and Henry never showed Malice towards HB after what Billy did. In their own way HB & Henry were Pirates and Firemen. HB always liked looking for new territories from Oklahoma, Springfield, Venezuela, and Paris France. Henry on the other hand knew how to put out Corporate Fires in the 1990's with Alan Michael #2 then played by Rick Hearst. Don't you notice alot of GL Actors "Win" Outstanding Younger Actor, him, Monti Sharp, Jordi Vilaluso, Tom Pelphrey and Kevin Mambo.
I can't believe that GL didn't sign Rebecca Hollen to a contract right then and there. A perfect foil to Blake for Ross's affections. A rock of the Lewis clan. GL did family better than most.
Best part about that episode1. Phillip's comments about his Aunt Alex then Mindy asking about his better half (RICK not Beth). 2. Billy's face when he saw Mindy and Dylan. and finally 3. That kiss and lingering hand hold by Ross and Trish. and this exchange. Blake: Is there something I need to know? Ross: You're not the only one with a past.
It's kind of sad that Roxie was never in the last episode showing she was happy and well. Sadly enough Matt & Vanessa broke up. I still think Bill was so lucky that HB & Henry got along well with each other, alot of In Laws never do even when Billy & Vanessa weren't together HB didn't mind Vanessa moving on with her life with another man.
@@merricat3025 lol I wasn’t really a fan of Cassie myself. I think I more wished Roxie came back as opposed to a new sister (Cassie) coming on. I liked Rusty tho.
That make me absolutely sick. I never liked Reva but after that I hate her even more. That character disgusted me. When she was propositioning him the old man was getting all excited. Made me sick. Reva would sleep with any Lewis that she could. If HP had a brother she been bonking him too
Is there an scene towards the end of H.B.'s run on the show where he sings "September Song" to the cast? I remember this happening but can find no reference...
This was before she found out that they were Brother & Sister. Also, Trish did show up a couple of minutes later. Maybe a different Actress played her and that's why you didn't recognize her. I also noticed that Mindy & Rusty didn't "speak" to each other.
@@laminage I just rewatched it. I must've blinked the first time. LOL. You're right. She did make an appearance. It was the same actress but just with shorter hair so I didn't recognize her.
@@itsalongstory1024 Yes. I only started watching GL when Matt & Vanessa met. I would have loved for Trish to say she met a "Woman" and have her "Girlfriend/Partner" be UK Actress Sarah Lancashire, she's an Icon on TV most recently in Last Tango In Halifax.
Also if this were a UK Soap, William Roerick and Larry Gates (RIP) would have been voted Best Double Act who bring out the best in each other in terms of acting performances.
Was it hard for Kimberley Simms to step into Krista Tesreau's Shoes as Mindy back in the day. Mindy reminded me so much of Adele Silva who played Kelly Windsor on the UK Soap Opera Emmerdale on and off from 1993-2001in which she was also a Cosmetics Model and had an affair with an Older Man but for Kelly it was "Many" Older Men. From a Doctor, Her Teacher, Her Boss, and a Entrepreneur, and a Brother who owned a Company with his Brothers. Her former Boyfriend was in the Boy Band Blue Antony Dacosta who did duets with Elton John & Stevie Wonder and his former Partner Duncan James was on the UK Soap Opera Hollyoaks.
Rusty, Reva, and Cassie were 1/2 siblings... Sarah O'Neal Shayne was their mother. Cassie's father was from Chicago and Sarah had a one night stand with him.
Also HB was very forgiving with Billy when he messed up at Lewis Oil because of his Drinking. I think Billy did bad things because he didn't feel worthy since his Real Mother was a "Madam".
Michael Zaslow had become very ill and died the following year. The actor who played Hampton Speakes also died in 1997 from cancer, but he had been let go from the show a couple of years before he passed.
@@laminage I think that he went back on One Life To Live where his character actually had ALS like he did in real life. GL fired him before knowing he had ALS
Something just felt off about this funeral. I don't think these writers knew how to write for the characters. It was great to see Trish, Wanda, fauxMindy, and Dylan. This is the beginning of them ruining Dinah in order to prop Cassie - one of my all-time least favorite characters in the show's history. Maeve Maguire was brilliant as always as Vanessa. And it was sure nice to see HB and Henry in the flashback. I think ATWT did much better with their tribute to Don McLaughlin, who played patriarch Chris Hughes. But that's just my opinion.
