So... I guess I'm late to say this, but I work in a bank in the EU and what should happen with the found credit/debit card is that you should call (or visit) the bank. They will ask for the card number, and possibly a few details around when/how you found it, then they will disable the card. If it is a customer-centric bank, they will then call the cardholder to inform them and arrange for a replacement. What they won't do is get you to send them the card to possibly return it to the cardholder - if the card was in the possession of any third parties, the data on it is as good as stolen, as far as the bank is concerned. Just my two pence on the matter. EDIT after having listened further: Cutting it in half is okay, the cardholder doesn't get informed of it ASAP - but it's their damn fault, isn't it? :D Anyway, I'm real proud of Brady for not just shouting "Did anyone drop a card?" in a restaurant. That's what years of Grey-exposure does to a person I guess. :D

In restaurants, we call that mechanical credit card device a knuckle buster - only use it when our computers go down. Its a huge pain in the butt. Its now used to keep a record that the card was actually with the customer and the transaction was signed for. I hate using them..

About the lost card thing: there usually is a agency number/bank code (idk what is the correct name in English, but every bank agency has a specific number that you can usually check on-line in about 1 minute). If the agency is in the same city, I take the card there and handle it to a manager or something (Since the bank has your details, they can call you to come pick it up). If the agency is in another city, I cut it.

I was in a similar situation, having found someone's credit or bank card. What I did was take note of what bank had issued it, because the bank's logo was in the corner, and I took it to the nearest branch and gave it to them. I have no idea what they did with it, but it seemed like the best way to go.

I can imagine a novel about a kid that creates a super-intelligent AI and can't figure out what to do with it. He asks the AI if they can make any money on the Stock Market and the AI says that even if they make the best predictions, they can't do better than quadruple their money in a year, and since the kid has only about a thousand bucks in savings, bothering with the stock market is pointless. The reason is because there are already really good computer algorithms that are much closer to the stock market physically and have very low ping so that anything they could predict and make money off of would go through those servers, and those servers would buy the stock in a millisecond and then turn around and sell it to them for a profit, so that they made less than they thought they would. If the kid moved to New York he could make about a 6.5x increase in his money, but he can't afford to make the move, so it would be pointless. He asks the AI if it could solve cancer, and the AI analyzes the research data of 17 universities and concludes that every major lead was already being researched. Then the AI tells him that the main difficulty is scaling up the volume of testing apparatus to tackle the problem, and the difficulty there isn't the technology, it's the money. You need to monitor each individual strain of a biological system to find one that has the desired outcome, and it has to be done in real time because adding drugs to speed up the process won't work in the human body because drugs always have unintended consequences. So more machines scanning more biological systems equals more money. The kid goes to a college and is in his twenties, but he is small and most people mistake him for a teenager. He is short for his age and has a babyface. The computer that he was able to create the AI on is at the limits of the technology. He overclocked it already, but the AI complains of "headaches" when he leaves it in the overclocked state, and when he installs more ram or more than 8 cores in the processor, the AI starts making errors and coming to the wrong conclusion. It seems like there was something about the original parameters of the program he used that now the AI can't run on any other hardware. It also has a 1080ti videocard, but that is mainly for visual input so the AI can see the real world and isn't used for anything else. He was able to create the AI when he was given 1 hour of time on the University's Supercomputer in a nearby city and had it run a neural network on a particular piece of data he was working on. He had the supercomputer find him an AI that could write a program in the programming language C that was able of playing a 3D game and doing something "interesting" in the game. The "interesting" thing was to collect a certain number of coins and in that particular game, the coins were hidden inside puzzles and had side-quests that had to be done in order. Each AI was given a chance to watch someone play the game for 30 seconds, generate code, compile a program, and let that program attempt to play the game for 1 minute and get as many coins as it could. It ran this many, many times in parallel. After attempting 1 billion 7 hundred and 43 times and finding no AI that could make a program that could find even 2 of the coins, and after spending 43 minutes of his hour, the kid added a simple change to the program. He copied the sourcecode for the compiler into a default template and allowed the supercomputer to generate a modified version of that template. Which would compile a program, and that program would be able to compile and run modified code within itself. This was so complicated that the Supercomputer could only do 1 tenth as many as it should have done in the remaining 14 minutes, because he allowed the AI to watch the gameplay of it's own program, change the code and recompile the program, and then let it run again. So that in the end each AI got 10 tries to get coins in the game, instead of 1. After only 49,271 tries he ran out of time. He copied the top 100 bots to a USB drive and went home.

All moral quandaries addressed on the show from now on should be a part of a new segment called "Brady's Bench."

I'm no expert on this whatsoever, but if it's like anything else in the US that feels archaic, the reason we can't adjust to new payment options is because some company or companies is lobbying to make it hard as hell to do. Also the country is huge, which doesn't help.

credit card thing: the answer is "tell the local owner" who is the "local owner" well if you pick it up and 3 feet away someone is looking in their wallet yelling "WHERE IS MY CARD" its that guy if you find it in, for example, a McDonalds, its the front counter of McDonalds What if, however, you find it in the street? Well the card has a label on it. Visa. The answer is Visa. Call them and tell them you found a card. Only if there is no local owner do you bring it to the cops, but yes, I'd bring it to the cops. other possibilities: I once found a set of keys on the street. I did a twitter search for "lost my keys" to see if anyone local had lost their keys. they had not. so I turned it over to the cops.

Good grief guys. Call the 1-800 number on the back of the card and report it lost. Then the bank deactivates the card immediately and ships a new one out to the owner while notifying them. It's not rocket science :-) Mitchell & Webb reference :-)

Should you not just go to the bank that the card belongs to? they can match the sort code to the correct branch and then they can notify the owner.
