H Post without Twitch Stick

When building barbed wire or high tensile fences the H post is the single most important aspect of the fence. It offers all the support and handles a lot of force.
My concern was the twitch sticks used when making the brace support. Many times as the fence gets older the twitch stick falls out due to animals playing with it or just over time. Once it falls out all the tension is released and the H post loses it strength. You can wrap the twitch with some wire but you almost never see anyone do that.
I wanted to come up with a better way to tension the brace wire which doesn't require a twitch stick. I have seen where others wrap the brace wire then remove he twitch stick which just looks like problems in the long term.
I hope my idea works out long term. If not at least I am trying something different and I will continue to learn and figure out a better solution for this problem. I haven't been able to find much online with Building an H Post without a twitch stick. If you have any ideas or input on why it may or might not work please leave a comment below.

Let me know how it stays up for you. The keeper in the wire should be wired to the horizontal brace. That way it won’t knock out or fall out also I subscribed. Happy trails Luke

Back to the Basics 101 Thank you. Is the keeper the same as the twitch stick? I'm hoping to get away from twitch sticks completely. I was thinking of using a wire strainer or turnbuckles for adding more tension but my hope was less stuff. Less stuff = less stuff to go wrong. Also less stuff you have to buy and carry around with you.

Yes it’s the same thing, I have been fencing professionally and on the ranch for a number of years, I have never had a “twist dick come out ever. If installed correctly they will not. Also if you make your brace correctly your wire should not loosen but actually tight in time.

That is really good to know. I have a few H Post with loose tension wires so maybe it is just animals playing with them. Cows mess with Everything. You can tell by the video whom ever installed this H Post could have done a better job. The horizontal brace is a little low. This fence is close to the house and a very short run and might be removed in the future. I wasn't going to spend too much time rebuild the H Post when I have many other projects that are more important. I'll keep you updated on how well the tension wire works without a keeper. I am thinking of also trying one with the turnbuckle and one with a wire strainer to see what works best. Who knows might be the next big break threw for barbed wire fencing. lol.
