U.S. Hexagon KH-9 reconnaissance satellites were designed for wide area search and were the last U.S film based satellites. Declassified in 2011, the clever and complex optical-mechanical systems brought film back to earth for military and intelligence services during the cold war. This provided the U.S. with very good intelligence on adversaries and other areas of strategic interest.
On loan from the National Reconnaissance Office, one can be seen at the National museum of the Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

Phil Pressel’s is a former employee on the design of the Optical Bar system. His blog is a pleasure to read:

"They found where I was held prisoner with a spy satellite... One of them KH-09s. This baby, it shits out a film canister 12 miles up, then a C-130 comes by... pffft... Snags it at about 30,000 ft. This was not the digital age. This film had to be processed, analyzed and delivered... All by hand." - Frank Woods (I knew it sounded familiar!)

I love your work mate, however, I have a question. What tools do you use to make these models and are there any sources a beginner may learn this from? Could you at least release one tutorial for us? Great to have you back!

@byson8628 Год назад
@@GBR9794 dude there are so many tools used for instance a combination of sometimes SketchUp + illustrator + blender. Manuevering through these tools might be complex for a beginner like me and thus I decided to ask what tool offers depth and is worth learning in the long run and simultaneously provides quality output. I just need an answer that offers depth. I don't need to explain myself further 🤦
@GBR9794
@GBR9794 Год назад
@@byson8628 tbh you should prob start learning a few of them and then decide it for yourselves. also, it would be better asking people who works in modeling / creative industry for that to get general feels of it than someone that just works for RU-vid production.
@mrdinkelwinkel
@mrdinkelwinkel Год назад
@@byson8628 Everything that he makes you could do in "Blender" for the 3D (free), For the motion graphics aka 2d animations I would recommend "After Effects", For the editting i would recommend "Davinci Resolve" (Free). I have 8 years of editting experience and 4 years of 3D experience wich is currently my job. For tutorials, Blender start with the Blenderguru Donut tutorials, the other programs no idea wich is a good tutorial series. 3D however is by far the hardest thing to get the hang of! Hopefully this helps! Much love, Dinkelwinkel

Could you please make a video on tank gun stabilizers? I would really like to comprehend how they work, however I have found the online explanations a bit difficult for a layman like me

Beautifully done sir! I was just entering college in 1973 and wanted to enter the field of remote sensing from aerial platforms. I ended up starting a career at a national laboratory by mapping their facilities from imagery taken from an aircraft. Oh how I would have loved entering Mr. Pressel's gravitational field earlier in life. Another book for those interested in this field is 'Secret Empire' by Phillip Taubman. 'History makes you smart, heritage makes you proud.'

This is almost more impressive to me than more modern digital satellites. All that money and effort and engineering to send film-based cameras into space, with color and resolution we today would consider subpar, with the end result of the mission being only four (large) spools. So much energy for four spools... spools of utmost importance to the intelligence community. What a fascinating time in rocket science history.

What's incredible is that CIA released all of the technical details of the KH-9, BUT refused to declassify the actual photographs!!! CIA doesn't want China/Russia know how sharp those photos are.

About 30years ago , I saw a satellite photograph taken over Saint Peters square in Rome. It was at a slight angle not straight down . A man was walking his dog , it was possible to see, it was a poodle and not some other breed of dog . If they could, do that then , what can they do today with all the advances in technology ?
