That + the other explosions in general was to delay Patriot enough to get to kill phase 1 before he gets to the wait point but late enough that the jetpacks that spawn on phase change sync with the ones on the field and Mayer's skill is ready.

Leizi was my first option. I progressed up to 83/96 with her and was at a bit of a loss until deciding to try out Leonhardt instead. With Leizi, the mobs require me to use her skill early enough that not all of it hits the shieldguards, then after the second usage they're still way too healthy by the time they're moving out of range. They have 60 res, so Leonhardt's res shred comes in quite handy when it comes to getting rid of them and the higher amount of control with his skill also makes it easier to control phasing Patriot at the correct time (to both phase before waitpoint and line up the jetpacks for bots) as well as giving me more leeway with Mayer not having to worry about leaking mobs during off-skill Leizi. There is still a chance that with extra Mayer micromanagement it could have worked by shifting Leizi's position forward for more time hitting the shieldguards, but Leonhardt seemed like the better and simplest option here.
