Among the azure waters of Ha Long Bay off northeastern Vietnam, 1600 lush islands create a captivating labyrinth of channels, a spectacle that has stirred wonder for centuries.
While humans have inhabited this region for millennia, most of the islands remain untouched by civilization. Yet, these secluded coves and natural towers teem with wildlife.
The name "Ha Long" originates from Vietnamese lore, translating to "descending dragon." Legend has it that during times of invasion, a dragon descended from the heavens to defend the Viet people. As it fought, the dragon spewed not only fire but also precious emeralds and jade, which transformed into the verdant archipelago we see today.
The majestic rock formations, known as karst, have been shaped over millions of years. Seashells and sediments accumulated on an ancient sea floor, solidifying into limestone through tectonic forces. Subsequent geological activity, including rain and river erosion, sculpted these formations into pillars, caves, and tunnels, creating a unique marine karst landscape.
This breathtaking scenery extends into two adjacent national parks, found on Cat Ba Island and Bai Tu Long Bay. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the splendor of Ha Long's tropical islands through activities like kayaking, caving, or even soaring above in a seaplane.
