The Haas CL-1 is an innovative chucker lathe with many unique features that make it stand out from all others in its category. With its standard 8-station automatic tool turret, and optional bar pusher and parts catcher, the CL-1 can do anything from small prototype parts to full-blown production runs. Our simple, step-by-step explanation of how to operate the machine will have you running parts and ready for production in no time.

This brings back a lot of good memories from the old Hardinge CHNC (I think was the model). I ran them for many years and loved them. Looks like the basic mechanical design was pretty much kept the same and the programming and electronics brought up to current technology. I'd love to get back to this design again. Very easy to set up with the combination gang and rotating turret.

You would probably recognize the way the collet closer works too. It is the same lever-type closer but they have mounted an air piston to lock it in place.

This machine has incredible hang-over from the saddle. I can't see how it will be rigid at all. On CNC lathe's, effort is usually expended in trying to design the tool tip directly above the X slideway.

IMPORTANT!!...With my CL-1, the on-screen instructions for the bar pusher don't look like this and you don't jog to cutoff position, you jog to where the stock will be before you start cutting (G54 plus the amount to face off in most cases). This is important if you are working near the chuck. If you set it the way they show in this video, it will potentially plow into the collet/spindle. When in doubt. set it way out in front of the spindle to verify which way your works.

is there a tool block like 08-1047 that can be used in the CL-1 -

We are about to get this machine delivered soon. I have a quick question about the live tooling. Does the live tooling use M135 and M154 like the normal turret lathes?
@dsh1001

How about a video on setting the tool offsets on the CL-1 including the offset entry on the interface. Specifically, when setting up drills in the gang tooling and you are setting X on a drill, there is no set to center option so do use "X diameter measure" enter a "0" when asked for diameter? ===== UPDATE: For anyone reading this and wondering the same thing; I indicated the tool holder to center and hit "X diameter measure" then used 0 when it asked for diameter. This worked fine. Also, there is a change in the NGC (next generation control) for bar feed. It is mostly the same, but there is one IMPORTANT difference. Where Mark says at 5:30 to move the bar stop position to where the stock will be when it is cut off,, the NGC requires you to jog to part zero instead. That is where you set the position. This can be a problem if it is set wrong since the feeder will plow into the collet during a bar push if it is set wrong.

Hi David, have you tried to make double push with the bar pusher? There are g105 address codes, any experience with that?

@@autumn8468 I don't know what you mean by" double push". But I do use the bar pusher.

@@dsh1001 G105 with a J code. Double push operation is for making a long part.
@dsh1001
@dsh1001 3 года назад
@@autumn8468 If I understand you correctly, you want to avoid tool deflection on long, thin parts. You want to (for example) push the stock, turn half the part, then push the stock again to turn the other half. You can probably do it (sort of) if you have macros enabled on your machine. I believe all of the bar feeder macros are in the 31xx range. Essentially, you run the first half of the program then put in a line of macro commands to change the bar feed length (#3100 I think), feed to the new length then run the rest of your program. The only problem would be getting the bar to feed to that second position precisely every time. I doubt the CL-1 bar pusher is capable of that sort of precision since it is a simple feed-to-stop type. You would probably need a servo driven bar feeder to be that precise and even those are usually only accurate to about .005 inches at best. A swiss-turn machine may be a better fit for this type of part.
@autumn8468

@@dsh1001 Thanks David. Swiss would be a better choice, but we have the CL-1.

The YT means that machine has an additional 4" of y-axis travel, 20". That's more than a standard VF-2 or VF-2SS which have 16" of y travel.

@Midnight_Rider96
@Midnight_Rider96 5 лет назад
Yes it does live tools, not sure if they can be put on the turret for axial milling and off center drilling though. The website shows it as a side mounted option, so that would allow milling and drilling only perpendicular to the spindle
@dsh1001
@dsh1001 5 лет назад
So far it is capable of two live tools that will drill/mill on center only. The tools are mounted on the same slide as the turning tools but on the opposite side. I have been using negative numbers to program the live tooling but there may be another way.

how quaint, a muzzle loading lathe, do you make one in which you load stock from the safe end?- the end on the opposite side of the head stock of the lathe, so we don't get bitten by any tools in the lathes' operating zone.
@dsh1001
@dsh1001 5 лет назад
You don't have to get into the tool area to load a bar. The feeder swings out to load. You can see it more clearly in some of the other videos.

WHY DO YOU NEVER MAKE ONE OF THESE MACHINES WITH A 3J COLLET THAT CAN HOLD 1 3/4 DIA PARTS THEN ANY THING BIGGER THAN THAT COULD GO INTO YOUR LATHE WITH A CHUCK. THIS WAY YOU DO NOT HAVE TO KEEP TAKING OFF THE CHUCK AND YOU CAN MAKE PARTS FASTER AND TIME IS MONEY IN A SHOP
