Haas Y Axis Limit Switch Error. Oh, no, my machine won't home! The y-axis limit switch is producing an error. I called my HFO, Selway, and they gave me instructions on how to fix what they though might be the issue.

Thanks for posting this. I got this fault this morning and my heart sank as I need to get a job done urgently. Within an hour I was up and running thanks to your video. Top man.

Glad to hear that you could fix it 🙂Haas seems to be a good machine but at this point they save imho too much money. That's why machines producing chips should have good mechanical limit switches (and a better cover). Here we use switches from Euchner, a company which only produces such switches. They are made for eternity - or at least 33 years ;-) That's the age of our CNC lathe machine. It still homes and switches off with the emergency switches pefectly. And they are very precise. The deviation is below 0.001mm which really surprised me. And btw.: they are mounted at the surface so cooling water, chips etc. are always around them.

I guess you get what you pay for, right? This machine is far better for me than the Tormach I was going to get. Sure, it's new vs used prices. But still, it's an awesome machine for what I need. Are there better machines out there? Absolutely. But I don't see a Kern in my future.

@@JohnSL "But still, it's an awesome machine for what I need." That's the point 🙂I also like the Haas due to its small size. I only was surprised that they used this kind of switches. Oh, btw: I visited the company "Dr. Boy injection machines" last week. I don't know if you know them. Here in Germany it's (beside Arburg which has the bigger ones) the most used brand for small and middle injection molding (they even have small table machines). The company is located only 50km (around 30 miles) from me. It was a very interesting visit - especially for 3D printed molds and having a look to all of their machines. At the end of the day I picked a Boy 22A Pro and I hope to conclude the contract this week. Delivery then would be in week 44. It's interesting that there are very few YT video of these machines. When I get it I think I will do some videos to show its capabilities. May be it's interesting for you. Best regards!

Even though the whole "dealer" model is not something I'm a fan of, the Haas HFO experience has always been amazing for me and having a local group for repairs is awesome.

classic fix! it's interesting to see there aren't any sealants around the way cover mounting surface. The VFs have a gasket on there from the factory, then we run a bead of silicon caulk after it gets ripped when pulling the covers. It probably wouldn't hurt to do that for yours too. One other quick note, you can power the machine and move it around without the way covers, which makes it easier to clean the buildup inside. Just have to be careful to protect the covers from getting seized up during the home search.

I saw that in some Haas videos I watched about replacing the way wipers. These little office mills are different from their big brothers in so many ways.

Huh. I'm surprised at how many chips are under the way covers. Is that normal for this machine?

I think it's because I was a little too aggressive using compressed air to clear the chips off the way covers. I really need to hook up a wash-down hose using coolant.

Me too. I'm going to pull all the way covers this weekend and completely clean everything. This is something they recommend doing once a year. I use this machine a lot less, so every couple of years for me should be good.

I don't like seeing all those chips around the ballscrew. Makes you wonder how they get in there.

Some chips will always get past the way covers, especially if you blow off your parts with compressed air. Some machines are better than others in this respect, but you can help matters by using the lowest possible air pressure to blow off parts, by using coolant to wash down or just using a brush. Aluminium chips tend to get everywhere because they're so lightweight, but thankfully they're not hard enough to do a great deal of damage most of the time. The powdery chips from cast iron or hardened steel are a real menace. It's not particularly exciting, but most problems in the workshop can be prevented with simple housekeeping. A machine that's kept clean inside and out is a machine that's regularly and thoroughly inspected.

@@j.dietrich As someone that has never been in a machine shop or even seen a CNC machine besides mine, are you supposed to take your way cover off periodically to clean them? if so I need to get on that

I've reached out to my HFO to ask that question. I would be surprised if the answer is anything other than yes. Because my OM-2A is very different from other Haas machines, it's hard to find instructions. But I suspect I need to replace the wipers on my way covers.

@@j.dietrich Yes, that's why all machine makers warn of using compressed air! It is absolute poison for the precise spindle bearings etc. As you said: when really using air, use it wisely and at the lowest possible pressure. Much better is a broom or brush!

Easy-ish fix! We used to have a similar issue with a Denford CNC router. It had sort of cheap microswitches for home and balsa wood dust would migrate into the contacts. More than once we had the dreaded creep away from home.

Yup, that's what happened in this case. It crept away from home until the servo motor faulted because of excessive load. It's nice that these machines are smart enough not to damage themselves with things like this.

Great video, but it is really irritation that information on the machine models are not available from Haas. Why is there not sensor layouts available to help locate the sensors? Without a friendly HFO spending their time and hoping to make it up later you are stuck in blind mode for something that takes a few minutes. We cannot find the Y-sensor on our TM1P

If your HFO isn't able to help, there are a couple of other options. One is that there is a Haas CNC Operators group on Facebook. There are a lot of people and someone is likely to have an answer. The second, of course, is to reach out to Haas directly. They might be able to send you a drawing that shows where they are.

@@JohnSL Thanks - we got some drawings from our HFO that were not correct for our model, but our problem - while looking like yours - was that we had a chip problem, but the main problem was that we had let the machine sit for 2 weeks and it wasn't until our HFO pointed us to function 53 - jog w/o zero that we found out that we had rust on the tram ways that causes it to only allow us to move 0.2mm in either direction. We had gotten the sensor to work, we just didn't know before we could use the jog function

this would happen with my TM machine, i bet its just a ship that is sitting on the sensor. stuck with some coolant or such. it is an inductive sensor and any metal sitting against it will trip it. so the slow creep is it saying"ive been tripped and recognize my position, now i will reverse direction until the sensor no longer sees the limit switching" but becouse the metal is on the sensor, it just creeps and creeps waiting till it no longer sees the insuctive load but that never happens becouse its a metal chip" clean it with a wipe of your thumb and your done.

Best thing you could do is to NOT use air to evacuate chips from the way covers ! The massive chip load under the cover is proof that you are blowing them where they don't belong. When I rebuilt my '91 VF-1 A few years back, there were way less chips than what you had, even with my way wipers being completely degraded. Always use coolant spray (washdown hose if equipped) and if needed, a bench brush to wipe them off the covers. If you have to use air. Blow away from the table, NOT towards it.

Yup, that's the lesson I took away from this. I have a more recent episode where I added a washdown hose and that's all I use now.

Unholy cows ! How in the name of Hades hells did so many chips get under the protective cover ? I have a mini mill 2 from 2010... thinking i might open it up to check how it's doing one of these days

I assume you mean behind the Z way cover? I was surprised by that as well. I believe it's because I was using air, and therefore blowing the chips up into the gap between the segments of the way cover. Using coolant washdown will avoid this for Z, but not completely for X and Y. Haas recommends cleaning under the way covers once per year. So yea, worth checking.

do not use compressed air to clean your machine, the air is forcing all the chips into the crevasses of the machine . a hose with coolant would do a much better job.

I'm totally in that camp now--I just need to figure out how to set up a washdown hose. I'm currently thinking of hooking it into the coolant line at the Z axis.

You are not supposed to use Grease on y/z Tableis you're supposed to put W oil in it that's why you keep getting errors because you're supposed to be able to wash all the chips out you're gonna ruin the ball and the gears.

These machines are designed to use grease. The maintenance instructions for the larger Haas machines talk about using Red 1 grease. This machine has an automatic grease system that uses a cartridge on the back of the machine. My HFO told me it's fine to clean out all the grease, and the machine will automatically add it back in.
