Season 02 : Deep South
Episode 03 : Habitation Haydel : Wallace, LA
Plantations in the deep south during the period before the civil war were massive and complex operations. They were the mega corporations of the times. They specialized in specific cash crops such as cotton, tobacco and sugar cane. They also had a tremendous need for labor, and at this time in American history, that meant slave labor. Understandably, there were many attempts by slave laborers to find ways of fleeing these plantation ending their lives of servitude. Sometimes though, they were never able to escape their prison.

Thank you for giving Black Americans who were enslaved the justice of their story being told. This happened to millions of Blacks. Too many people still don’t know his horrific history. I’m glad you are giving it the respect it deserves. From using the term “enslaved” humanizing my ancestors when for so long we were/still get dehumanization. So much respect and love to you! "enslaved workers" isn't a term I think I've heard, or at least I didn't take notice of until reading your comment. I've long realized that using the word "slaves" felt... just morally gross, as if it didn't recognize any human aspect of these people, but it hadn't occured to me that there might be a better way to say it or what that way might be. So just letting you know that your comment was helpful and educational to someone 😃 For whatever reason, I didn't catch it being used in the narration.

While there, I noticed a ramshackle old building with no windows and a rusty bar to lock the outside on the front door. As I left, thanking her with some of the mushrooms I'd found, I asked her what the building was for. "Oh, that's where muh great, great grandpappy kept the help," she replied. Slavery is a part of American history that many want to gloss over. Many don't want to think of their ancestors, their grandparents as being so wrong. Still to this day, half the country want to prop up the confederacy as heroes fighting for their cause. But the truth of it is much darker. Until we as a country reconcile with our past atrocities, we are doomed to continue spinning our wheels. We have to reconcile with the idea that being white and Christian isn't a good thing. The way Christianity has become in America, it's the most hateful, the most racist and the most dangerous organization we face. Important note about the Thirteenth Amendment: It technically didn't *completely* outlaw slavery, it just shifted its practice into the American penal system. Article 1 of the Thirteenth Amendment states, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." That whole, "except as punishment for a crime" part is an enormous factor in the institutionalized racism that still plagues Black Americans to this day.

Giles! I used to live in West Georgia on 20 acres. Unknowingly, I made it a point to get on the 4wheeler and learn the layout of the land and cannot believe how black families STILL live. I have many things from slave houses, partially collapsed Plantation houses, items dig up from around remaining fire places etc. I’ve sold most of the historical items however, I kept a few items. I have two hand sewn quilts with raw cotton batting ( we call them the good dream blankie). I have a cast iron shackle, cotton/seed separating paddle, handmade bricks, iron camp marker (ie soldier camp), a small bar of SILVER stamped AG. The bar of silver I had a Numismatics professor examine and it’s comprised of DEAD PEOPLE DENTAL WORK. If you ever want to know how and where to go exploring for historical treasure let me know. The land is a few miles from Warm Springs, President Franklin Delano Roosevelts backyard.

I knew a lot of this from books but not about the new moms getting two breaks per day to feed their infants… how sad that thought is to me of a little tiny infant crying from hunger in a shack for hours wanting for it’s mom to return from the fields. We have come a long way as a society. So shameful.

I often think about the early days of America, when great minds were at work to create a Republic, industry was being invented, people traveled the land and made astonishing discoveries, and I am about to be so impressed by how American society was back then─ and then I remember we still had slavery. Nope, we were dumbasses.

You know slavery goes back to the first existence of man right? Nah you don't. You probably think slaves was race related, nah it wasnt
@LaffeeTaffeeGG
@LaffeeTaffeeGG 2 года назад
@@bstaff812 That's not what I meant. I meant the idea that someone can "own" another human being is so barbaric and ridiculous, and the brilliant minds back then were still too clouded to see that. It'd be like Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, and Neil deGrasse Tyson all believing the Earth is flat. "You guys have amazing ideas and are leading the world into the next generation of science and technology but... you guys are dumbasses."

This is a great video. Sometimes history gets lost in the details (many of which are boring details about politics, etc) so this is a great way to cut to what matters. It would also be amazing to hear about what it was like in places like Senegal and how these people were actually brought to the US.

Sorry to say. But when you spoke of the people being forced to work at 4am till after dark, had me thinking the work many of us do today only to make the company owners more wealth while we do the dirty work. Only to have barely enough for us to thrive. Certainly so given the huge inflation percentages lately. I’ll admit however, my opinion and what happened to the people of 200 years ago is NOT the same, in any way!

That was an amazing history lesson. I went to High School in 1960's and I clearly remember history books insisting that the Civil War was about State's Rights and NOT Slavery. when asked what the difference was, there was a lot of hemming and hawing, and the subject was quickly changed. I was fortunate to have a very hip Civics teacher who busted a lot of those myths with stories of the Jim Crow laws enacted that kept people enslaved. I also grew up in a very diverse Navy town in So. California so prejudice was not rife. It seems that a certain political party wants to drag us back in time to "The good ole days" stripping people of color, women and Indigenous people of all the hard earned progress. I hope you'll do a piece on the westward expansion of America and how this land's native people were betrayed at every turn. Thanks for all your hard work sir.

It was about state’s rights. It was about their right to own slaves and more specifically, their right to go into the north and bring escaped slaves back to their state. It’s mental gymnastics that people do in order to convince themselves that history didn’t happen exactly how history happened.
