32:00 I agree 100% with the use of pre-race “rituals”, not just for racing but for training also. Firstly in terms of sensible preparation (getting kit ready the night before) so that the cognitive load of doing anything but getting on the bike is reduced to near zero but also to keep you missing out on training time or missing a session altogether due to lack of preparedness. But secondly also the more esoteric stuff that you might do in terms of ingrained patterns that are more about choice - what I mean is just simply having the same snack at the same time before training every day - it doesn’t have to be perfect or proven objectively but it just gives you assurance and confidence in that if you hit a perfect workout before when you had that snack at that time, that you’re replicating the circumstances to set yourself up for success this time. I realise it can get a bit nebulous and “kissing the rabbits foot” but it also doesn’t really matter if it’s essentially a placebo, you’re just setting that confidence in your head that you’ve recreated the conditions that have worked for you before - in that respect even though we can be a little sniffy about “pre race rituals” it actually is almost the definition of the scientific method in terms of ensuring that conditions are as close as possible to “rerun” an experiment (workout) that has been successful in the past!

I'm super new to cycling but I'm facinated about sport psychology and mentality of an athlete. I'd like to thank you, Jonathan for this awesome interview. I'm already 33 and being overweight for long, buf although I have no target to become professional, I've learned a lot durinh this conversation

Consistency is King

21:00 you praise “consistency” and I hear this message time and again, but no one ever explains what they mean by it in the context of training. In terms of dictionary definition it means steadiness, uniformity, equilibrium - but these are all things that are cited as absolute no-nos for training, since without novel stimulus and periodisation a consistent training regime would just lead to plateauing and stagnation (and also the research shows greater risks including of burnout and overtraining). So given that you say that analysing athlete data in TrainerRoad shows consistency is key, what do *you* mean by that in terms of positive trends that are used to identify athletes who are making positive progress, development and growth? Just as one example of the confusion in this area, your guest warns about the terrible consequences for training of catching the flu and missing 4 weeks training in a year… and yet taking 4 weeks off from training each year as an “off-season” is actively encouraged by yourselves and many others as essential to give athletes a mental break. So I’m left wondering if you or anyone else are actually clear in your own minds what consistency actually entails or, and not looking to cause offence, but to put it bluntly if “consistency” is simply a catchphrase that is parroted by rote routine and is devoid of meaning as it applies to athlete training.

Consistency = following a well designed plan. It is not referring to the plan itself. The closer you can follow that plan, the more consistent you are and the better your chances for good results. A good plan would never have you taking a few weeks off (flu) after you've built your base. It would, however, give you a few off at the end of the season.

@@erikknudsen4034 if that’s the case then a much better word to use would be “adherence”. Or perhaps “compliance”. Consistency” doesn’t mean what you describe at all in that case 😅 It’s also worth noting that “adherence to structured training” as the primary determinant of success does not align with Seiler’s “hierarchy of training needs” in which volume (which much more closely aligns with the idea of “consistency”) is the most critical factor. I feel that clarity from TrainerRoad would be good here, they have the data and must know what factors are most significant - it’s a shame that data is proprietary given the size of the dataset and their seeming unwillingness to date to publish it openly

I wish onced they would ask some pro coach or athlete about what they think of their for instance “mvssb” or high volume… because from whatbi hear from athletes and coaches on your podcast is base base base … volume volume volume… so ask them straight next time. Thanks 🤙🏻

@Mudge just winning a WC race was beyond apprehension so I wouldn't even question an American winning the overall. Since he meant the overall, he's being kind to even consider asking ha!

@@mutleyadamsracing2684 one, don’t use big words if you don’t know what they mean. The word you wanted was comprehension. Two, in his response to the question, Jim said he thinks we’ll see a world champion in the next few years, so it seems he understood the question to be about world champions as opposed to world cup champions.

@Mudge ya, you just don't have the education but that's expected.
