Owning a home can change your life. It can be a gateway to financial stability and to building wealth that you can pass on to your children. But across rural America, many families struggle to access this core part of the American dream.
For over 50 years, the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) has supported local housing organizations so more rural Americans can access safe, healthy, and affordable housing.
HAC’s newest video shows the difference homeownership makes in people’s lives. Jordan Bryant is a full-time student with a full-time job who is building his own home in Morehead, Kentucky, with the help of the Housing Assistance Council and our local partner Frontier Housing.
And what difference will this home make in Jordan’s life? “For the rest of my life, myself and my children will have stable housing.”
Investing in homeownership doesn’t just change the lives of individual people like Jordan. It helps entire communities build a better, stronger future.
Under the “self-help” model, families earn “sweat equity” by working on their home, building it stud by stud and nail by nail. This sweat equity allows them to forgo making a traditional down payment.
