After watching this I was a little skeptical but tried it on a 7 year old Phillips electric which I hadn't used in a couple of years. I did the steps twice. And safe to say I'm impressed, no snagging or pulling. Just a really close clean cut. Thanks for the information 👍
Thank you very much Robert for taking your time to put this out on RU-vid I used it on my NORELCO that was not doing anything but just beating the whiskers to death and now it cuts very nicely, just like new!
Of all the videos I watched on YT, about sharpening blades on rotary machines, this one is the most consistent for keeping the blades in good condition. Other videos talk about sharpening blades with a flat grinder and glass finish, but it is not suitable for curved profile blades. Thank you for documenting this.😀
I have just used this to sharpen my heads and it works. I remember seeing a video about using handwash after you shave to keep it clean, when I take them apart to check them, they are totally clean.
Practical tips like these that help us commoners in our daily lives are very welcome, I thank you for choosing to share this trick with the rest of us! ❤ 🤗 😊 It is really appreciated!
I'll be darned! I'll give this a try as soon as my latest replacement blade set on my Norelco rotary shaver shows signs of 'dulling' I'll report back. 8/24/21: I tried this and WOW! It worked. I just shaved after doing this procedure yesterday and it IS just like putting a new set of heads in my shaver. DO THIS and save! 11/8/21: Just resharpened my shaver - AGAIN! This procedure is amazing. Again Robert - Thank You.
Thankyou Robert, I was about to buy some new blades for my Philips 5000 series when I came across your video, I followed your instructions and and am amazed at how sharp the blades have become. Thankyou, it's like having a new shaver.
Amazing! This actually worked. My Norelco is probably 10 or 15 years old and it's so dull now such that it occasionally pulls at the hair above my upper lip and it hurts. It also takes me a long time to shave because of having to go over it again and again until it cuts the hair. Thanks much!
Sir, you’re a genius! Thanks so much. It worked on my 4-year old Dual Precision blades which I use daily. I can feel the smooth close shaves on the skin again.
I just started with the electric rotary shaver 3 months ago. I am glad I found this video early as I thought I needed new blades. I tried this today and it seems very good. I'll try it once my hair grown a bit longer. Thank you for this tip!
I have an old Norelco 8240XL and they don't make the replacement HQ9 blades anymore. There are a few available but they cost as much as a new razor. Saw a number of other hacks for sharpening the blades and they required power drills or sandpaper, and then I saw your simple but brilliant solution. As a retired engineer, I salute you.
Still got my 8240xl, just replaced the original blade. You are right about costing as much as a new razor. With this trick, I will be probably never have to replace them. Btw, best shaver I ever used.
I also have an old 8240XL that I’ve had for many many years and used to sharpen via the whetstone method. Yep, Norelco no longer makes the HQ9 head. There are a gazillion on Amazon, but are all Chinese and mostly junk and a waste of money. Your method is novel, easy, and inexpensive. I will certainly try it out. Right now I have the blades and foils soaking in alcohol to degrease.
My partner was given his first electric razor when his dad passed away. My partner tried it and said it was useless and pulled on his hairs. Because I'm a huge fan of reusing and DIY hacks, I thought I'd try this. First, when I popped open the cover it looked like nobody had ever cleaned it (thanks for showing me how to open it). Then I followed your instructions. I actually gave it two toothpaste treatments because when I cleaned out the toothpaste (after the soap) even more hairs and gunk came out. I cant wait for my partner to get home and give his dad's electric razor another try...!
Aloha Robert, I just bought a replacement set and they did not shave any better than the old set. So I performed your procedure on my old blades, and voila.....got a nice close shave again.
Great video. I tried it and saved my self $$ on buying new one. I have a Remington rotary shaver that was dull. Seemed to fix it, I can hear it cutting hairs now. I also tried it on a $14 budget rotary razor, that has blades that stick straight up against mesh, they are sharp, have cut my self few times cleaning head. Tried it on it and seems to sharpen that too. Got that one from Giant Tiger.
Interesting video! I'm about to try this on my 5 bladed bald head shaver. As a retired dentist, opaque paste toothpastes are slightly more abrasive than the gel type toothpastes. I don't know if pastes will work better or not. THANKS for this video!!
You deserve an emmy! I should have been doung this all these years! Wow ! Thank you Sir! When I find my norelco maybe I try this technique! Sounds like really good idea!
I am going to try this. I sharpen my blades by rotating the them clockwise and counter clockwise on 1000 grit sand paper. That works but your method looks easier. Thanks for the video.
Genius! Wish I'd seen this sooner! You should recieve an Oscar Sir! This should become standard requirement Naval grooming shave procedure Quantico! May the good Lord bless and keep you! THANK YOU!😅
Close inspection of my razor's blades reveals they are indeed on their last legs (a couple of them are very flimsy and bent). However, that said, this did make a notable improvement. I think I can eek a little more life out of these blades before replacing them.
Hi Robert After watching your video 6 months ago I have been doing this with my Phillips series 3000 rotary shaver and it works every time 😃 THANKS Just wondering are you still doing this on the same set of heads which would be an amazing 7 years if I am correct..all the best Tony
Whoa thank you so much. It worked on both my Philips norelco 3500 rotary shaver and my Braun series 3 foiler. Basically for the foiler I just moved it up and down on my hand, but it still worked, thanks.
Oh man, the easiest, fastest, cheapest, most hassle-free method - perfect! :) I also tried a fine chrome/steel-polish-paste, which works fine, but will mostly use toothpaste as it's already right there beside the shaver. Thank you very much, great short tutorial!🥳
I have a Braun series 7... It's not rotary like yours, it's a foil that's flat... What you've done looks great, makes great sense. Would this hack work on the Braun series 7, just wondering thanks
@@jeffgrave My shaver wasn't holding charge, so I changed the battery, cleaned and degreased the heads using dilute vinegar, then sharpened the heads with toothpaste as in your video. Now, the shaver is better than new, and the shave I get is amazingly good. Really close with no 5 o'clock shadow. Thanks for the toothpaste hack. It really works.
I have a 10 year old Philips Sense 3D RQ1250 shaver do I use these steps with the cutting wheels still in the unit please? And can this be done on the side trimmer that is attached for that blade or doesn’t that work in the same method?
That is the not the case for over 90% of blades out there. The blade is a dual tapered design, the toothpaste allows the slightly curved edges to be honed against the mating back screen. If you run it on a flat surface, you will just further dull the blades.
