@@winbunny1277 Shaves with a safety razor and in particular straight razor will give you a closer, smoother and longer lasting shave result. So yes your stache growth will take longer than you are used too. Only way to know is have your own experience. regards dapper shaves

@@winbunny1277 For me, I shave every 3 days consistently unless there is a super important event coming up, then I would grow it a little and take it to the barber to shave it clean. But no matter the tools, my hair always grows back in 3 days. But, the safety razor does give a much closer shave, especially if you use the 3 passes method, once with the grain, once across the grain and once against the grain.

@@dappershaves I got the Henson Mild V2 right when it first was released. Now I also have the Lord L6 and the A&E B-1 Lancer. The Henson is my favorite still. I like Bic Chrome Platinum blades with it, but am still trying to find what works best in the Lancer.

@@AustinBanewitch one? Because if you get something like that, MicroTouch one, you’re not going to have a good experience . Treat yourself to a GOOD quality artisans shave soap. Spend at least $15 -$20 on a soap . It will last years. I have over 30 different soaps lol

I generally use both an electric (rotary) and a safety razor. a quick blast with the electric to get rid of the bulk oh the hair (especially convenient at the chin and upper lip area) and the safety to take care of the rest. I found this method to give me the easiest time and least skin irritation

@@ThePaintballgun Everyone is different so you can’t make blanket statements. I have extremely thick beard hair and sensitive skin and have tried every combination over the years. What works best for me is Speick pre electric shave lotion and a Braun 9 electric foil shaver. I have 3 small patches that never get picked up by the buzzer so I then go and finish those with a straight blade.

@@paracyntrixalso, used steel safety razor blades can be re-used for other purposes (such as pencil sharpening, cutting and sewing, etc), while used cartridges can only be thrown away, with a corresponding outcome for the environment.

I switched to the safety razor a year ago and I have some regrets, I regret not using it earlier. It was an amazing improvement over disposable razors, lower chances of getting cuts (I almost never cut myself with it, in contrast with disposable razors, where a cut or two were normal). It leaves a better shave and is far more accurate than disposable razors, as you can see the blade directly. Also, another plus is that you may get yours for free, as all I had to do to get mine was asking my grandpa if I could have his (it's advised to wash it thoroughly though, mine spent more than a decade in a locker).

I started off with a cartridge razor when I joined the Marines in 1986 as a peach fuzz recruit. When I was stationed at 29 Stumps as a salty L/Cpl I received my first straight razor shave which made me look like a baby faced kid, but felt heavenly. Unfortunately, due to the threat of HIV it would be my first and last for a long while and they were banned at barber shops throughout the Corps for years. Then last year the heavens parted and I was reintroduced to the straight razor while having a conversation with my favorite aunt. She explained to me that in her day young ladies didn't carry pistols, but had a few places a straight razor could be tucked away for self protection or corrective action on boyfriends whose eyes strayed to long on another women. I thank God she didn't offer to show me where she tucked hers. To me, straight razors have a wonderful history, find there way into fantastic stories, and except for the first one I gave myself, a lot of great shaves.

The reason why the overwhelming majority of people use cartridge or disposable razors is due to convenience. Using something like a straight razor takes time not to mention a degree of maintenance to keep your razor from getting rust or corrosion in order to keep it in good pristine condition not to mention for the most part you would have issue taking something like a straight razor on you during flights.

i use a dull rock and just scrape away the skin until hair can no longer grow there. Fr though, I've been using Harry's for like 3 years now and it's always worked great. the cartridges last forever since my facial hair is sparse, slow growing, and not particularly thick. any shaving gel works perfect for me.

I had been using cartridge razors since I started shaving at age 16 - 35 years ago. I was perfectly happy with them and the big name shave gels. Then I learned about wet shaving and safety razors. I love the variety of shave soaps to go with my safety razor and the quality of a safety razor shave is fantastic!

i started with electric razor, allways had skin cuts and iritation, moved to cartrige razor, nice shave but the fact that it was so "long" i was imposible for me to contour the beard or mustache so i changed to safety razor. it changed my life, i use it for the last 4 years, nice cut eazy to use. for the last month i purchased a straight razor. I can confirm the straight razor is so COMPLICATED to use, BUT, after you get the grip and start feeling it.. damn, i love it. the fact that each time you shave you get more experieced and the final result, knowing the effort that you put it, shaving become an experience, pleasure.

Went back to a safety razor to prevent ingrown hairs common in my type of skin. 🙂 Never looked back. When I travel, I buy the cheapest cartridge type razor I can find or the Bic type safety, always shaving but never below the skin. Or, take the empty shaver and buy blades at the destination. Next choice would be a Wahl balding clipper, an electric shaver or straight edge, avoiding those four and five type blades whenever possible.

I have used electric, cartridge and now I am a permanent user of the safety razor. My main motivator was to reduce my plastic waste in landfill however the cheap replacement blades was an enormous plus.

I started traditional WetShaving around 2017 and I fell in love with it right away, there is a whole community of guys that prefer the old school way of shaving and collect all different types of badger brushes, vintage Gillette safety razors, straight razors and artisan shave soaps. I have a huge collection myself but I downsized and sold most of it, it’s just got out of hand lol. But I use everything besides cartridges, I use vintage and modern safety razors, Shavettes, traditional straight razors, I even sharpen or “HONE” them myself on Japanese whetstones, and that is a completely different topic and skill to learn, and I have a kamasori. Silvertip badger brushes are my favorite and there are so many different types of artisan shave soaps that often have cologne inspired scents so whatever your favorite fragrance is, I’m sure there is a shave soap and aftershave splash / balm combo to fit the season I recommend going on RU-vid and subscribing to guys like GeoFatBoy, KenSurfs, KevyShaves, PaulHFilms, these guys have great WetShaving content, I’m close with alot if them because I’ve been in the community for awhile now.

Currently my primary razor is a straight razor. Started using one about 3 years ago and have loved it ever since with my sensitive skin. My favorite thing is going from a full beard to clean shaven in a couple of stroke of the razor. Still have some cartridge razors for when I'm traveling and an electric one when I'm in a rush.

My beard takes long time to grow, so for me it's better having a safety razor because it provides to me a shaving longer strubble. In my case I used two: one is a Baili 179 for normal skin and Rockwell 2C for sensitive skin. You have a lot of options depending of the type of your skin.

Always used cartridge razors - sensitive type, but still felt a lot of irritation. Switched to a foil shaver and although the shave couldn't be very close, but it's super comfortable and quick. Would choose convenience over quality of shave here

Started shaving in 1954. Like most of my generation, I started with a safety razor and continued to use them until 1982. I tried a straight razor in 1963. I probably was overcautious with it but could not get a good shave with it. Mastering the straight razor is an elegant masculine accomplishment, but a bit too "retro" for me--kind of like being a master swordsman in the 21st century. (I prefer a .45!). I first tried a cartridge razor in when I was staying over with a friend. As soon as I got home, I dumped the Gillette adjustable I had had for 25 years in the trash and never looked back! I have used the Dollar Shave Club "Humble Twin" with complete satisfaction for some years. Cartridge cost is negligible.

After getting out of the military and having the time to actually focus on a good shave, I use a safety/straight combination. Since I have a beard, I like to keep it tidy, so I am learning to use a straight razor to define the beard line. Maybe I will eventually shave my neck with it, but the safety razor does fine for now. Overall, though, despite the learning pains of nicks and cuts, I have never given myself such a good shave.

I switched to a safety razor 10 years ago because I was flat broke and fresh out of school. I had to test out a bunch of different blades to find the one that worked best for me. The blades started to last at least a week once I found the right one. We're talking $0.01 per shave (lol take that dollar shave club...) and I'm getting a better shave than I ever did with my old cartridge razor so it is a no-brainer for me. I do keep an electric for air travel, if I am flying carry-on only.

There is also other aspects of the straight razor, as in more costs involved. The straight razor does dull over time, using a strop smooths the edge but doesn't sharpen it. There are compounds you can add like diamond spray, chromium oxide, and iron oxide. But these pastes/ sprays will also become ineffective at keeping the blade sharp. You will either have to pay someone to hone it for you (sharpen it), or you will have to buy sharpening stones to maintain your blade. So this adds to the - upfront costs. Also, remember that straight razors typically use high carbon steel, meaning they are more proned to rust, so you should keep a thin coat of oil on the blade, ad dry thoroughly. If you don't, the heavy investment will be destroyed due to improper maintenance. Strops are also easy to cut/nick with the blade as well so keep that in mind too. So, straight razor require a lot of maintenance.

My grandad used a straight razor for his whole life, never needed a whetstone, the leather strap was the go to. Whetstone are good for kitchen knife, but razor blades are far too delicate for them.

@@willy4170t are you talking about? That’s *HOW YOU HONE YOUR STRAIGHT RAZORS.* You’re just supposed to use a higher grit. For example my stone progression is 1k, 3K , 8k then I finish with my 12k , then strop it on Crome ox, then so my regular stropping routine. 15-25 on canvas and 50-75 on leather I have the *NANIWA SUPERSTONES* and a lot of people say they we’re basically made specifically for straight razor enthusiasts. But sone people prefer natural stones, I like the synthetics personally.

Only beginners NICK or cut their strops. I did in the very beginning, never did since. That’s why in the beginning I was taught to purchase a cheap strop from Amazon like the Naked Arnor ones. Like $30-$40 MAX. Your technique improves and you get quicker in time. Even though it’s not about speed it’s about technique, doesn’t matter how fast you go to be cool. As long as your leading with the spine and keeping the razor flat, and the strop nice and taught that’s all that matters

I have dual shaving method. On the weekend (usually Sunday morning) I shave with my Supply single-edge (or SE) safety razor. It’s rather a treat. I take my time and enjoy the shave; achieving a baby-skin smooth result every time. On Wednesday, I use my Panasonic wet-dry and do a wet shave with it to expedite the process. It’s not as close to smooth as my safety razor, but it’s still fairly nice. It’s quick and easy to clean as well. Then, if needed, I do a dry-shave with my Panasonic to get me through until Sunday again. Eventually, I plan on upgrading to a double-edge (or DE) safety razor. In my sights are the Henson AL13 and/or the Rockwell T2 or T2SS.

I use a straight razor with a replaceable blade, its a good starting point before you move onto the proper one, blades are cheap, as it only takes one at a time. Its very therapeutic watching yourself take time out and just relax on something so simple.

I personally have an electric razer. It doesn't take much time, you don't need water, or aftershave (Despite what the ad said, I don't use aftershave and haven't gotten any rashes or anything).. It's also probably the easiest to learn, didn't take me much time to learn at all, and my favorite part about it is that there's quite literally no way of injuring yourself. Great video!

@@ricardoespitiarunza2823 That’s why I switched to cartridges when I did. Had one laying around that had come in the mail. Used those for a few years before trying a safety razor to save money. Turns out it’s better for the environment, too. As are a soap and brush set. They work better, cost less, and are environmentally friendly. Win, win, win.

Turned to traditional shaving right around the beginning of Covid and met a great community of wet shavers through the different social platforms. I have thick coarse hair paired with sensitive skin and my neck has always been my trouble area. Been looking for that perfect shave as I had been using carts all my life and don’t know why but like many I just kept sticking to it. End of 2019 went back to the safety razor as I played around with one many years before but made the mistake of not selecting the right blade and thinking that was the best I could get. Truly enjoyed the shaves I got from safety razors as my knowledge grew from the community. Quickly went into Artist Club shavettes and both those provided incredible close superior shaves. Less than a year later got my first straight and I’ll never look back. It’s been the absolute best shave I’ve ever had and my skin has thanked me for it. My recommendation is to find a good beginning razor one that doesn’t have to set you back to much. You can get a Gold Dollar honed from an individual with experience in honing for around $40. Most important is to make sure you have a quality edge on the blade. Don’t be afraid of the straight razor. Does it take some practice yes especially with your non dominant hand, but once you have dialed it in after 30-35 shaves you will get the best most consistent shaves and realize that the past generations had it right from the beginning.

lol exactly! I got my first gold dollar from Anthony Esposito, you probably know of him “the stallion “ on RU-vid. He also helped me pick out my first quality one. A theirs Issard from France, I have since sold that one. Got a theirs Issard wolf and ram, then sold that one and got a J.A Henckels Friodur. It’s a beautiful piece. I also had a DublDuck and another Henckels model that I sold or traded. I’m always buy , selling and trading lol . It is a hobby for a lot of us.. we take pictures of our SOTDs Shave of the days and post them

I started using a straight razor 6 months ago. A good quality one from Boker, it all started becoming a real man with style for me. I am a knife guy so I have lots of knives and sharpening stones, got some extra fine stones for the razor. I don't have a lot of facial hair but I use the razor to trim, keep the cheeks smooth, and sometimes go completely clean shaved, pretty fast now without any blood often. I like the ritual, the close shave it gives, no waste, it will last a lifetime and the skill you have to learn.

I bought a safety razor a couple years ago, best decision ever. Still have half pack of blades, so im shaving for a couple dollars a year, great clean shavings and after few times, it’s pretty easy to use. I recommend to everyone to have one of those, mine its a $20 Parker by the way.

I recently got a Merkur 34C de razor and the shaving experience is significantly better for me than any cartridge razor I’ve ever used. It leaves my skin feeling much better and it’s a closer shave. It’s also cheaper in the long run, I don’t ever plan on going back to cartridge razors. I’d recommend to anyone to try it!

I switched to a shavete recently, it's basically the halfway point between a straight razor and a safety razor. It works amazing for my needs, as I'm in the military and have to travel alot. So not needing to travel with stones and strops like I would with a traditional straight razor is super handy. Plus just like a safety razor I can switch out the blades anytime they feel dull. Lastly, the shave quality is just top notch! I grow facial hair really fast, so a close shave is a must have in my profession.

My personal favorite is also the safety razor but the straight razor is not that hard to use at all because I learned to use it in a few minutes but the thing is you have to be careful at all times, but it's best for creating good lines for the beard and the face feels so smooth after.

I use a safety razor and it's great as you can use different blades plus they are cheap compared to cartridges. I cut myself when first starting out but if you go slow and let the weight of the razor do the work, then it's good. I used to have a cartridge razor in my 20'e but found it was expensive to replace the cartridges over time as the cost went up.

straight razor has been my primary daily Shaver now for 3 to 4 years. i still enjoy DEs and SEs as well. Once your proficient with a Straight a shave doesn't ha e to take that lone, I have knocked out a 3 Oss straight razor Shave in 10 min, but normally I take longer and enjoy it.

I used cartridge razors for years before trying an adjustable safety razor. After using the couple of packs of blades that came with it (pretty average blades) I bought a 50-pack of high-quality blades). I will never go back to cartridge blade shavers now. Last year I got some Kiss-My-face shave cream for the ultimate experience. I have found a warm shave after a shower the best/quickest option for a good result. For a daily shave, I set it at 2.0 and can do a quick no fuss no cut 1-pass 5mins (downward only strokes). For an important occasion, I will do a longer two-pass shave (down 2.0 and across 2.5 setting), for a very close smooth shave of about 10mins. For those very special occasions, I will do a 3-pass shave (additional against-the-grain stroke). I am now interested in trying a Henson Shaver but they are pretty expensive and I don't know if I will get any advantage. Can anyone shed any light on them vs an otherwise good safety shaver?

Went from the mach3 type razors to a DE safety razor 3 years ago and never went back. Much more affordable but I do have 2 straight razors that were my grandpas and I have tried em a couple times with bad results. Id really like to get decent with one and practice. I believe if more men tried out and saw how affordable DE shaving is they'd never go back to multibladed disposable razor blades.

The safety razor is by far the best choice. I have a Gillette King C , and a Rockwell 6c and I love them both. And since I use Dove men's+ 3 as my shave soap shaving costs me almost nothing.

I tried my hand at a sfaety razer for a few months and thought id be fine because I have very steady hands, sadly I never managed to get a shave where I didn't accidentally cut myself so I went back to cartridge razros. Over the years I have found a few tips for others who use cartridge razors. 1. Either wash your face with warm water / Wrap the shaving area with a warm towel for a few minutes before shaving. 2. Lather. Use either shaving cream or hair conditioner, both work pretty well for me. 3. I personally shave top down, then left to right, then right to left, then bottom up, then back top down, rinsing my blade of hair and cream/conditioner every few strokes. This has brought me the closest shave that has lasted me the longest. Good luck with your shaving endeavors :)

If I were you id go back to safety razor’s. You probably weren’t using the correct methods. The classic 3 pass shave. Use a brush, artisan shave soap, get into the shower, or a hot towel before. Use pre shave, and with a light touch let the razor do all the work. First pass with the grain, 2nd pass across the grain. 3rd pass against the grain. Then use a aftershave splash followed by a aftershave balm

I used many different devices over the years, had a time of electric shaver too, but nowadays, as I keep a short beard, I mostly trim myself. And I do it using Phillips One Blade first, to get the regrown hair to zero, and then finish with a cartridge blade for a smooth finish. I do it 100% dry, even with the cartridges, and after shave I just put on the aftershave lotion. Perfectly smooth and absolutely no cuts or irritations

In my early teens my dad handed down a double edge/(un)safety razor. Unsafety because he had removed the guard. The de razor was so fast and extremely close. Used that thing for years. When I finally got a new de razor the smoothness was amazing.

I went with a straight razor about 7 years ago, never looked back. The money saved over the years with that, and a good shave soap is worth it. Plus the ladies love a man who can use a straight razor. I went with Dovo straight razors. German quality blade, and they have beautiful handle styles

I'm a recent convert to a safety razor. It's so much gentler on my sensitive face skin, and as a result the shave is so much more comfortable. They also feel like they glide over my skin and shave the hair off so much more smoothly than a cartridge razor. I'm not going back.

Safety razor is so much better than catridge in my experience. Mainly using safety razor and just bought OneBlade for convenience. Easy to use, but doesn't cut even close as well as safety where you pretty much get rid of everything and easily.

I've been using safety razors ever since I started growing facial hair. It always gave me good shaves, but there was always the chance of also giving me a cut. Lately I switched to a cartridge razor (I saw the WS quattro Vintage Edition and I had to have it). Now, the shaves between safety and cartridge are comparable in terms of quality, my skin feels really smoth after shaving with the cartridge and I haven't cut myself...yet. It does tend to leave a bit of skin irritation, but it gets fixed easily with an aftershave or balm. The cartridges are somewhat expensive, but for someone who shaves 2 times weekly, a pack of 4 could last pretty much a whole year.

Ironically I just switched to DE/Safety Razors and love it. I will keep my cartridges for traveling only, otherwise with safety razors I am actually enjoy shaving again. Just be sure to get a nice shave soap and brush, game changer.

I decided to use the safety razor because I forgot to buy some disposable razors.i was more than impressed at how effective it was and I only watched like 2 RU-vid videos beforehand. I got a few nicks but it was far easier than I thought and was super cheap! I don't think I'm going back! A big plus is the safety razors don't get nearly as clogged as cartridge type when you have more hair to remove.

I shave with a safety razor and use a straight razor to get a clean beard edge. Then I use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries out your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturiser, then an anti aging eye balm, followed by a final moisturising protective lotion.

I got a straight razor (with switchable blades) a month ago for 40€ and I will only go back to a cartridge razor for traveling. Now shaving is something I look forward to every 3 or 4 days and not something I see as something I have to do because otherwise I will look terrible. For me it has become more like a ritual with getting up, showering and then use the next 20 Minutes only for shaving. I have cut myself here and there in the beginning, but after the third or fourth shave I got a feeling for it and the shave is incredible when compared to a cartridge.

Straight razor does it for me. It sure is hard to learn how to use it, but after 2 weeks I finally got to the point where I almost don't have any cuts anymore. Even better, it determined me to learn how to sharpen and hone blades, since I gpt it from an antique store and I had to get it back in shape. At first I didn't realize that it still wasn't shave ready, but after a few hours of research, I learned how to make it work with whetstones. It might be time consuming, but it really is relaxing so time flies when using it. 11/10.

I started WetShaving with a Shavette then got the most agressive safety razor witch is the Muhle R-41 from Germany so making the switch from Shavettes to straights wasn’t too difficult. But nevertheless, there is still a learning curve.. in my opinion it takes about 3 to 6 months to get really comfortable with it

Yeah, when I first got my cheap gold dollar right off the bat I wanted to sit down and learn all there is too know about straight razor honing. I watched every single honing video I could and some I even watched tens of times. Asked a bunch of questions , joined WetShaving forms, Facebook groups, the whole nine. I even bought extra gold dollars to learn how to correctly set the bevel. I mainly use safety razors because if I’m going to be 100 percent honest , it’s my preferred way of shaving, but when ever I’m in the mood I’ll brake out my Vintage J.A Henckels Square tip Friodur 7/8 th out if its case and put it in my rotation.

Electric Razor for extensive amounts of stubble. Safety to clean up further and then I'll usually get a shave once or twice a year from my barber with the straight razor. Once before the summer so I don't have to worry about a sweaty beard in my hot area. And then one at the beginning of the Christmas break for my dinners and family gatherings

I kind of get the comments saying a straight razor is hard to use but from my experience, as long as you lub your face with either shaving cream or gel or something, pull the skin, and get the angle right then it’s actually really easy to use. I have 2 broken bones right now so i cant move my left arm. And even with only one arm i got a perfect shave on my first try after 10min of RU-vid videos. Give it a try if you want, you probably won’t regret it. I love the feel of it and how good it shaves

I found that using a trimmer before shaving keeps the razor from clogging with hair, making them last far longer. I'm 16 and can only grow a coarse scruff.

I don't shave, but I keep on top of my beard lines. For that I've used a safety razer. The blades are dirt cheap, last a good few shaves, I rarely cut myself, and have never had an ingrown hair. I find the more blades you have, the more awkward it becomes to shave.

I have kept a beard for about a decade, just keeping the beard and my stubble trimmed with a beard trimmer. I am currently needing to go clean shaven for a while, but I *hate* shaving. I realized it is probably because I have only ever shaved with a garbage cartridge razor and cheap shaving cream. So I just ordered my first safety razor and high quality shaving cream, and I am looking forward to having a better shaving experience (at least after I learn how to use it). I also have an electric razor, which I quite like for its convenience, but it just doesn't give a quality shave.

I am currently using the Gilette with Ruby blades Cartridge Razor if I am not mistaken. Good for 6 months. As time goes by, it gets hard to do shaving because the blades becomes dull as you keep using it. And the blades are expensive to maintain. I will buy safety razor and blades which are cheaper compared to cartridge razor. Although it can be easily built with rust.

I started to shave with cartridge razors in 1986 it was the double blade Astra copy of Gillette in Czechoslovakia. My father gift me the cartridge and spray foam. In 2001, I switch to electric razor again as gift from my father. In 2009 I was with my family in Bulgaria and my electric razor was damaged you too long age. I bought there are some Gillette cartridges and spray foam to be able to shave there. It was very good to shave with blades again and then I decided to continue with glass shaving. After a few months I saw in RU-vid, some shaving with safety razor and since that time I use only classic shave with classic shaving cream or soap and safety razor. I tried also straight razor but it is very difficult and too complicated for daily shave. I shave daily.

Since growing my full beard, I use a disposable razor for cleaning up my cheek and neck line and my neck. Prior to my beard, I was a double edge/safety razor and traditional straight razor guy. Used to enjoy lathering up with a brush, stropping my straight razor, nice hot towel on the weekends, and then enjoying the shave. Right now I like being bearded, but if I ever go back to being clean shaven, definitely will be back to shaving with both my double edge and straight razors.

Right after I grew my beard, I used one of my straight razors to maintain my cheek and neck line and my neck, but stopped because of time. However I do really miss shaving with both my DE and straight razors. Some guys look at shaving as a chore, whereas I enjoyed it probably due to my shaving tools.
