Pomodoro method, 2 hour timer on youtube. Basically, 25 minutes study, 5 minutes rest X4. In the 5 minute rest I stretch, go to the restroom, and walk around my apartment. Great method if you want to stay motivated and get a solid 1 hour 45 or 2 hours of study done each day.
I just got a notebook to write down better notes. I have the motivation, but bouncing between 3 cert courses at the same time, I forget what the hell I learned a month ago...
Hey Chuck, great videos. I've started watching a lot of your videos in the last week and it's great for motivation. Question, in one of your videos you mentioned a digital notepad you had been using for around 4 months at that time. I can't seem to find it now to purchase it. Can you please reply with the name of it so that I can purchase one this weekend. Thanks.
Mike Ward you’ll develop muscle memory for those migrations. You’ll do great ! The important thing is to elaborate on what your implementing (if I’ve learned anything working with networks)
My father passed recently. I needed something to focus on so I studied hard everyday and recently cleared my CCNA R&S. I used David Bombal's udemy courses.
Honestly, I was lacking motivation doing my A+... this beyond helped me and I PASSED!! thank you for the knowledge and keep it up man. We all appreciate you
That's exactly what I'm going through right now. I work 20hrs a day and just don't feel like studying most of the time. Started out strong, and just pewtered out, lol
Fady Khalil Network+ Cert Guide by Anthony Sequeira, CBT Nuggets that my work gives us access to for free, Jason Dion’s practice questions on Udemy. I also have a RocketBook to take notes on that NetworkChuck mentioned on one of his videos. This keeps my notes organized and is highly recommended. Also, Professor Messer videos.
Work on a really grueling and soul sucking helpdesk to remind yourself that you don't want to be stuck in tier II the rest of your life. That doesn't work every day, so studying for 25 minutes and then playing for 15 works as well.
Love the shirt. God bless you. Now I need to start studying for IT coming out of the military soon. I wanna work in IT not sure what O wanna do though. I do know I wanna make way more than I make now.
I'm in Cisco 1 and am currently studying for CCENT, I take the advice of what Mike Myers said in the front of his A+ guide and that is ..... Pay for your Cert and schedule it. Put yourself on a deadline. Works every time.
Once I hit that mental block of studying, I put down everything I'am doing, gather my keys, equipment, wallet, and then go to the nearest YMCA and start lap swimming. Some people think it's a bit bizarre because I've done that without saying anything and just walk out, but it works for me because I clear my mind after an hour of swimming.
I like studying at a coffee shop. Its public so I dont feel like im stuck in a closet, but its in the open so I don't want random people to see me slack off, so I don't and actually study. A habit of mine is also coffee, everytime I do drink coffee my brain immediately associate it to do work or study.
Hey guys! Recently discovered this channel and want to thank Chuck for making such great content. Chuck, thank you for being so inspiring and making it so easy to learn and understand. My 14 year old daughter started coding about 6 month ago and got me into this. But there’s so much that a 14 year old can teach. Chuck, you and your content are opening my eyes to a whole new worlds. Thank you once again! Ps also a great technique that I use to study is Compound Effect. I learned about it in the same titled book by Darren Hardy and it very similar to Atomic Habit. Combining both creates an amazing combination. Now I just can’t wait to see where I am going to be in 1, 2, and 4 years.
It's funny how I came across your channel last year, decided to pursue ccna, got my CCENT, almost done with ccna and I just now found out that you're also a fellow Christian! That's amazing man. Certainly explains your love for people and helping us all. Great ministry you got, praise Jesus!
I love this! I have recently (the last few semesters of school) implemented habit stacking! I didn't know that's what it was called, but I have exponentially increased my quality of life. I've increased productivity, decreased stress, and even improved my health! I'm a 3rd year full-time IT student, have 2 young children. Creating a routine (specifically a morning routine) has been essential in me getting stuff done. I have a 4.0 GPA and I still have time to study for my Network+. Here is my current schedule. 0350-wake up 0400-0430- Lift or run 0430-0450- shower, skincare routine 0450-0500- make coffee, short journal entry 0500-0600- Certification Study (Currently finishing a video course, next week start practice exams) 0600-0700- Schoolwork -assignments/projects/study 0700ish- kids awake (That starts a whole other routine) My study area is my kitchen table, but its like a totally different place when it's just me, my family is still sleeping, and the sun hasn't risen. It's so peaceful and perfect for me. I setup my space the night before to create the environment: Open and charged laptop and clean rocketbook pages (I had one before I saw your video, so "I liked it before it was cool"). I'm starting a Corporate IT internship next week and working on making some adjustments to my routine. I'll probably have to shorten study blocks by 10 minutes each in order to leave 20 minutes to get ready for work. The key to this all working is prepping the night before so my morning routine goes smoothly! Get my coffee pot ready, set out my gym clothes, prep my study space etc. Also, having a study plan, like you said. Mine is go through 2 video courses ( however long that takes with the hour each day). A week of practice exams, a few weeks of labs, and a few weeks of going over week topics and going through a cert book. I have so much more I could say bout this topic, iff you made it this far, you rock haha
I don't have kids, but my routine is damn close. Alarm goes off at 3:45, immediately straight to the coffee. Get dressed, 4-5, then GNS3 labs until 7 before work.
I start with Cioara’s course in the morning because watching a video with a scratch pad & some coffee is easier than reading when you’re still groggy. If anyone knows about Jeremy Cioara, his energy and enthusiasm goes well with some AM coffee. Then throughout my day on breaks and at night I go through the CCNA book on the same topic to reinforce what I learned in the video. Having already heard and seen it, going through the book becomes a breeze and delight because it’s familiar. That “I’ve seen this before” feeling. Plus it’s interesting to see different approaches to the same ideas. For instance in subnetting Todd Lammle will find the block size/increment by subtracting the octet in question from 256, and Cioara will take the last network bit and convert it to decimal. Understanding two approaches can really help to check your work. (That’s just 1 example, and here are others, I’m sure)
My girlfriend studied 1 month for her CCNA Cert and she passed it. I have been studying for 3 months like crazy and i just get more scared i feel like crying!!!
Thank you, I’ve been struggling to study for awhile now. I’m going to implement these strategies today. “I’m going to study 6 hours a day” I tried that on top of a 11 hour work day! It didn’t work for more than a month.
Man it is like doing your Devotions at morning, but you are doing the same thing with your CCNA studies. doing devotions is what teach you to persevere in studying IT by keeping you on improving and improving what you learn and applying it in what you do. I hope all people will know the value of devotions because; this will be much easier to understand if they do, but thanks for the tip Bro and God bless you!
I was like ✔️✔️✔️I love this I’m always drinking coffee too and I neeed to knock out A+ Sec+ and Net+! I can relate to this with 4 kids mixing environments is the big one for me 😬🤣 I’ll get it down! I got this! Maybe I’ll get a desk or something I think I can invest in myself and definitely need to do the if I study I can jump online! Love this channel!
Day 1 of study: “ohhh yeahhhh” Day 2: “Just get one paragraph read and then we’ll be ok” Day 3: “coffee is gone and I haven’t even thought about study... what even is study?!?”
BARE MINIMUM h/w needs video or guide on home lab for CCENT/CCNA. For those of us who wants hands on experience (fUNK Packet Tracer). NOBODY on RU-vid right now in May of 2019 has such a guide or video posted.. LETS SEE IT... oNe
When network chuck uses his magic 8 ball to see into all of our lives and realized we all need him and his majestic beard to motivate us into our certs.
CHUCK! PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT YOUR COFFEE PASSION SHOW US THE BEST BREW METHOD AND YOUR FAVORITE BREWS!!! xd Ps can you link that coffee device? I'm in the medical field switching to computer science and all my co-workers are coffee people and I am the opposite but trying to change lol
Some of these "hacks" work for me, like surrounding myself with people who have similar goals and setting aside a time, place, etc to do your work. That's basically how I got through grad school.
I was just thinking today that I hate studying but I love to learn! You're 100% right about picking a good environment to study. I have to sit at a desk with a semi comfortable computer chair while I listen to music for white noise. Great videos! Your channel has helped me a lot about understanding the networking path that I want to take. Can't wait to check out the book you suggested.
I really needed to hear this today. I really need to get on the gride and get this CCNA cert. I basically used stacking to quit drinking soda over 10 years ago. Most times I will listen to CCNA videos on my 35-45min to work instead of music.
This video was right on time. I was getting to be a little burned out but like the 2 minute rule just studying a little bit of something I stead of wasting the entire day is better than nothing. Thank you for this!
Thanks...and that intro beat is a JAM!!! That is a really wonderful book. Thank you for taking the time to break it all down by way of demonstration.....and what's your favorite coffee anyway?
I have dedicated myself to study CCNA for 8 hours (breaks included) a day since I am a fresh grad and got nothing to do. Honestly, I am getting really nervous because I only have 3 months left for my scheduled CCNA composite examination. This video makes a lot of sense, thank you! :DD
Thanks for the tips and for being my conscience for the day. I'm ADD and the Pomodoro technique has worked in the past, but I had left it by the wayside. The reward bundling also makes sense. Careful about over-caffeinating, though! I am also a coffee addict and, while there is no definitive research that caffeine is truly "bad" for you, it can exacerbate anxiety as well chronic pain issues you might have to see a urologist for...
Just finished for the evening studying for my ROUTE exam. Passed switch about 11 months ago and hoping to test within the next few months. Slowly but surely, but I'm getting there!
I am a data analyst aspiring to be a data scientist, but I am having to learn Linux and Python to stay relevant in my field. I hold an MBA in accounting, ironically.
Hey man. thanks for the insights.. i have been studying for ICND2 for 2weeks now but i have barely finished 2 topics. my motivation has really been on the low. unlike when i was studying for ICND1 I was really motivated i couldn't wait to learn a new topic and answer questions regarding the topic...
I'm currently in college (majoring in computer sciences and network security) and on top of studying for school, I'm also studying for several certifications (CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, CEH). I made sure to put a 2 hour break between 2 classes a day for uninterrupted study, and I'm definitely going to take this video into consideration when classes start back up. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you're really doing the lord's work lmao thank you for making all these incredible videos!
Hi Chuck! Love your videos, they've oddly enough encouraged me to keep on going in my journey towards my IT career. Question: I'm a Cyber Security student and am going for my CCNA certs this summer, are there jobs in networking that focus solely on security? I've done a bit of research on networking IT jobs, but I've struggled to find positions that don't bundle in some sort of Network Administration with the offer. I find it confusing that my school offers a relatively new Cyber Security major despite what I see as a lack of Cyber security jobs.
I play guitar before start studies ...and also love to watch your videos on how to be motivated and knowledge of the latest technology videos. thank you for uploading great content ...your student from india
You are so motivating! I leave the military(Medical field) in about 6 months so I am really trying to push for CCNA, (computers always spoke to me when patient care never could). I was beat down by the amount of information in most of these courses, and I really lost the dedication I had when I first started. I will get this before I get out of the military and I just want to thank you for your motivational words and content you create, I will keep you posted!!!
the timing of this video is amazing. I'm doing sec+ study sessions 6 to 8 hours on the weekends but almost nothing during the weekday due to my service desk role, so I get home tired and do another 45 minutes of work then family time and I'm dried out by 9pm.
For me it is to study first thing in the morning - straight into the shower, heater under desk, coffee on my desk ready to go. I don’t have the distractions of the day, had a lot of wasted time in my morning routine anyway and can do whatever l want at night. Plus l tend to gloss over video training before hitting a book. There is a great quote l like to when hitting those sticking points ‘when you get tired rest, don’t quit’
Oh man, I keep getting distracted from the CCNP! There's so many amazing technologies out there right now, I got obsessed with the python netmiko module, then Ansible, then MPLS, then Azure, then back to Python because of pyATS and Genie. Does anyone else have this issue? I mean, I'm still consistently learning new technologies, it's just not always focused on the certification I'm going for.
I have this problem where I want to learn too many things! I jump around and learn very little about a bunch of stuff, which has gotten me nowhere. So, I've decided to really stick with one thing and go with the flow. Luckily I'm starting my internship next week and hoping it'll show me some things that I want to focus on and things that I'll actually need to know in the field. Good luck!
Im currently reviewing/self review for more than a week and boooommmm Im glad i found this this video ..., hahah your truly Amazing..., HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone..,
The craving portion had me chuckling to myself.😁😁 I inadvertently started associating my gaming with studying. Whenever I drift off or catch myself passing out. I would boot up a competitive game and play a few rounds to wake up or refocus and get back to studying.
Yea good point, I was going to get a laptop to study on couch, but I am glad I did not. I am shocked you play video games and juggle a family even if for 15-30 minutes, I am taking your advice I cut out all the bad people and befriending the IT guy. Even small chats help. Loled@wanting to be shredded but the brownie is just too good.
Dude I love your channel. I know I'm late to the party here but if anyone reads this, I highly highly recommend The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg to go along with Atomic Habits. I'm a hypnotherapist by trade and I work with people on habit building in order to change their life. It really is all about the small incremental changes we make. Btw Pomodoro Method is good too. Look into the work of Rossi and Ultradian Rhythms; the book The 20-Minute Break if you REALLY want to maximize your productivity. Also, another neat caveat: information is better retained when you study two different things at a time, no more or less. Which is why I'm here. When I'm done studying hypnotherapy and the mind, I shift gears to studying tech skills!
9:53-10:15 My style is more of a combination/hybrid. It's a mixture of taking #massiveaction and/or that #PomodoroTechnique or method (←hope I spelt it right) you mentioned up to multiple sessions or succession. 21:20-21:25 Yeah, I hate that too. But with #RU-vid. Let's bring back the ole #autoplay feature.😁 21:37 Glad to hear that you're a #PlayStation fan. 😎 I can't believe this video is over 3 years old - pre-pandemic since #PS4. I proudly own a #PS5. If you would have seen my comment now from back then you would freaked out. 😅 22:43-22:45 Also, glad to hear that you're incorporating your spiritual energy...into it as well which is also important. For me, also, it would help me feel accomplished. And of course, everyone else is commenting about the shirt relatively speaking; the multiple _More of God_ words across it.👕
God Bless you Network Chuck! I bought the Atomic Habits audible book while listening watching your video. Thanks for sharing...let's me know I was on the right path as far as how to study!
Some hacks that I've learned from others or developed on My own are these: 1.) As soon as you wake up (after you take that morning trip to the bathroom) make your bed and do some minor cleaning. It builds a type of metaphorical inertia and starts your day with a small accomplishment. 2.) Instead of thinking, "oh crap, I know I need to freaking study...," Visualize yourself at the end of this long, tedious road. For example, I want to be a pentester. I visualize Myself grinning with a brow furrowed with focus. The visualisation resumes with a montage of things I don't understand yet, but I add in this ritual the memory of having learned it some time from where I physically sit in spacetime. I picture shaking powerful hands. Maybe a head of a security firm says she's fascinated with My techniques to bypass what she thought was air-tight security. Maybe HR at a hospital sigh a defeated albeit happy breath, that I beat his security but I'm at least on his side. Or, the leader of some local business starting up says they'd like to hire Me or retain Me to try to breach and improve their security on a regular basis. I walk back those final achievements to the end of taking an exam. I feel that nervous energy, that nail-biting, breath holding, pacing the floor anxiety before getting the good news that I've passed the exam for a cert. Going back further, I find Myself recently triumphant over a stumbling block in understanding something- that *eureka* moment in a grocery store when the last tumbler hammers into place and I finally got it. Retreating further in the timeline within this visualization, I am rewarding Myself with a few drinks for months of studying, working out, and all the other lovely licks from the fire of the Promethean forge which has raised Me from the stagnant morass which has engulfed Me. I'm basking in Pride and Power, getting praise from others but most importantly from Myself. Then I come back to Me, right now, waking up from this spell, and I'm seeing a door which begs to be opened, in the form of My study materials. "Game on!" I say, challenging anything that dare come between Me and My future of Power and Success. 3.) Pretend there exists some god or goddess smiling upon Me, like a celestial parent that yearns for the day when I actualize the Power of My Will, to lay up for Myself the treasures of the Earth, and swoon in the sweet indulgences of My desire. Feeling the proud pat on the back of forehead kiss of praise with each accomplishment. Hearing the caring chides whenever I fail to work towards self-Empowerment in phrases like, "Aww come on, you were doing so well! I know this is fun now, My dear, but why not use this as a reward when you've worked towards Mastery! Isn't wealth, power, and influence better than laying around watching television?" 4.) Pretend I'm talking with My potential future selves from time to time. The lazy, underachiever future is laying there, penniless consumed with apathy and neglect, saying "this is the last **** you can give, mate. Do it now!" And the powerful, wealthy and influential Me is saying, "Oh I have so much to tell you, but I can't talk long! Your future is sweeter than any narco-nap you've ever had! Thank you for staying on the right track!" Most of these are a form of ritual, but they certainly give Me the motivation to keep chugging along when I remember to do them.
How I studied for my CCNA was that I uninstalled every game and distraction from my computer. Also I unsubscribed from all youtube channels that were not networking related. Otherwise I always ended up playing games or watching some crap on youtube :D
LOVE your shirt. Love the vids man. Just got into cybersecurity. These all help so much. Also, LOVE Atomic Habits man. One of the few books I have the physical copy and the audiobook.
One thing I always have to remind myself of is that God wants us to be the head and not the tail. And that if I continue to study for my CCNA and show got that I am working then he will take care of the rest. The Bible says and all these things shall be added unto you. Thank you for all you do Chuck, you really do motivate all of us.
I love you response and if we think he created all things . So if we ask him to give us the spirit of knowledge and wisdom , he will empower . Glory be tho our Heavenly Father !!!
Most people think you have to be a good person to go to heaven or "repent of your sins". The bible actually teaches something different. A man asked a question.. Acts 16:30-31 ...Sirs, what *must* I do to be saved. And they said *believe* on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved... Notice the answer wasn't to "give your life to God", or be a better person or stop sinning etc. Salvation is based on faith and faith alone. John 3:16 kjv John 3:36 Ephesians 2:8-9 Titus 3:5 Galatians 2:21
Not IT related, but dude I don't know how you drink your coffee black. I tried that because my Father-in-Law grumbled at me once when I offered him cream & sugar and black ends up bothering my stomach for some reason. However, as a whole, I do love coffee. For that(and that fact that I am trying to break into the IT field, you have earned a sub!)
habbit stacking. I started to do that out of force. currently out of work (waiting for vetting for my new job). i was being so lazy. then slowly got my self into a habbit. first coffee with morning news. second coffee. thired coffee. breakfast. learn BGP. break with GMFB. study more. run. poker. get wasted. haha
Why did this find me in such an odd time. I've been on a personal growth thing for a month now and have been seeing this book name everywhwere.. haven't been watching many tech videos for awhile and BAM! Network chuck comes to rescue. My next book in cue. Can't wait. Thanks dude.
I noticed some of your clothing alludes to abrahamic mythology. I never studied it Myself, so I need to know... Do you do any sort of rituals to your coffee? I bought a bag and I already drank some. Now I'm kind of worried that some sort of christian arcana may have been imbued in it. I just don't want to succumb to any weird new age edgy spirituality. To each their own, you have a right to practice whatever religion you want. I won't try to save you because I know you don't want it and it would be pointless anyway. I'm just looking out for Myself.
I wrote a simple powershell script that pops up every 15 minutes and asks me what i'm working on during the day. (->->-> then logs it with a time stamp). the popup is a distraction, but i've found it re-focus's me and draws me back in when i've stopped working). It doubles up as a time tracker, and i put detailed answers when i respond to it and it doubles as a worklog.
Hi chuck thank you for the videos great info very rich & informative Currently am studying for my CCNA looking for study partners or study group anyone can help ! Thank you all again
Can you do a review of the Cisco 9 Part Network Training through iCollege? supposedly covers material for basically every test for about $50 yet I can’t find much about it online. I no way do I think it would be all encompassing I’m just trying to find more about it and if you think it would be worth it as material you could use to study?
This is kind of crazy, however, I study before going to sleep. Of course this is dangerous, since by putting it off until the last, there is the possibility of blowing it off. But I will do 25 minutes of hard study. I do coffee since I am almost immune to it. Then 5 minutes of walking back and forth. This is my pleasure because I can think about what ever I want. Something I am thinking about building something or nothing at all. This is a pleasure and has the added benefit of letting whatever I am studying sink in. Then 20 minutes of study and then 10 minutes of chill. Then 15 minutes of study and I am done and I can go to sleep. I find that I retain things much better after a night of sleep. Nothing I like more than sleep so even with the coffee I go right to sleep. Sometimes, of course, I blow it off but more often that not it works for me.
I passed my A+ 1001 but am currently in a major motivation slump for the 1002. Most of the study time that I have is currently devoted to algebra for a class. :\
It all falls into place if you are just a person who belongs in the field. If the IT field is not easy for you...get into something else. Oh sorry, you all want to make money doing a desk job. :(
Hi. I tried to use Pomodoro.. it didn't work that well. Now I try to use autoscroll when reading... it's setup for a decent speed... not touch anything... just be concentrated not to loose time and understand content. For studying after work I go to sleep earlier so that I am refreshed even after a full day. I have around 4-5 precious hours before sleeping... a lot of time. I also use mindmaps to take notes of important idea. I also study only at my desk... no bed... couch etc... too many times lost track of time/fell asleep. I excercise some mornings - I go running at 6-6:30. I try not to eat too much... because it makes me sleepy and drains my energy ( too much sugar is a bad habit). I hold on to a pen... to condition myself to be in that mood every time I have a pen in my hand.
My quirky habit tip: Buy some glass friendly markers and each night before bed write at least three goals you want to accomplish on your bathroom mirror. Whenever I wake up and get ready for the day, it's the first thing I see, and I'm more likely to get it done. This helped me prioritize my CCNA Studies, and I've been doing this ever since.
Can you make a video for people that work from home and need study habits? When I worked at the office, I used to study on the train and also study at my desk after work. Now, my mind cant get into study mode if I am at home. I don't know how to hack this and also, there is no coffee shops or libraries near my house that I can go :/
