Really looking forward to what's gonna happen next with this. I have a few CCFL inverters laying around and always thought it would be interesting to use it for something a bit different.

The reason why the module in the factory-made one is potted (enapsulated with resin), is for high voltage isolation to keep the module small. Potting electronics is generally not used for trade secret circuits, because the circuit can be then x-rayed (unless the circuit is surrounded by lead).
@PodeCoet
@PodeCoet 7 лет назад
Awesome! My brother and I did this years ago too Instead of placing the fuse directly into the arc, we upped the voltage and attached the electrodes to two nuts (spaced ~10mm vertically from eachother) with the fuse passing through the centres. Basically the electrodes touch the fuse. This causes the arc to form inside the fuse (as the carbon content from the charcoal makes it mildly conductive), causing it to combust from the inside out. Perfect ignition every time, and the voltage is sufficiently high enough to pierce through any crud formed onto the electrodes by the combustion process
@drkastenbrot
@drkastenbrot 7 лет назад
0:44 Thats not quite true. The epoxy block contains a simple HV transformer and is potted for isolation. All the circuitry is on the PCB and it is a super simple single transistor oscillator driving the primary. I have a TV ccfl driver somewhere, thats gonna be fun as its pretty powerful ;)

I have no desire to light cigarettes, fireworks or tissue paper but found your video fascinating. The circuit analysis was excellent, even without the desire to actually build this particular application one can learn a lot from such videos. I had never heard the term "Royer Oscillator" so this is an area for further research for me. Many thanks for the video. Bob

Careful about getting the output wires too close. Some of these burn out almost instantly if you short them. Even more likely once you remove those blue capacitors which are there to regulate current (or so I've been told)

@drphu

There is plenty that look so good these days @ Benning Power Electronics, for example not that I am trying to sell you anything though. In this vid though, it's easier @ higher frequencies.

@@drphu do they look that good under heavy load ? Most inverter sine wave gets distorted under load
@RotaryMarx

@VC-oz5fi
@VC-oz5fi Год назад
@@xsauce3858 i think its the load that make sine wave inverter gets distorted Because most modern appliances draw harmonicly distorted current If you want clean sine wave then just load your inverter using pure resistive load only such as tungsten lamp
@TheMechanator
@TheMechanator Год назад
Some house AC inverters use a Pulse width modulated signal to the transformer from a DC source(batteries) A 555 timer or faster is usually used. It produces a stair step trace on the scope. It's very close to AC for regular power use. Not great for high frequency like with radios(harmonic splatters).

It is interesting, but I feel a slayer exciter with a single TIP31C and a simple 500 turn secondary would do the same thing. and a slayer exciter is more scale-able and simple to start with. either way looking forward to part two. Merry Christmas

That black can isn't because of IP. It's because High Voltage circuits like this need to be very good isolated from the ambient. In that black box there was only some diodes and capacitors to double/triple the voltage.
@erlendse
@erlendse 7 лет назад
Or just plain windings? No need for DC output. I have some of the parts molded inside TV high voltage transformers, and for certain without the epoxy they WILL short out!
@rich1051414
@rich1051414 6 лет назад
They don't use transformers. Most use much simpler and lower current voltage multipliers. I don't know about this specific lighter, but in general, those black tubes that are epoxied that power arcs are usually voltage multipliers.
@talonjuel9486
@talonjuel9486 5 лет назад
I cant say this for all but in mine the box is a transformer and it is in that one too
@talonjuel9486
@talonjuel9486 5 лет назад
@[NCG] NubeCubeGamin I have the exact lighter circuit and all that's in the black casing is a transformer, use your brains people 4 wires going in 2 going out 2 on the input are tied together and attached to positive the other 2 are attached to a transistor its obviously a transformer it's a super simple common self isolating circuit and if you still don't believe me riddle me this, if it was diodes and caps in the output would be pulsed and blue due to the capacitors discharging and the lower frequency and obviously the arc coming out of this looks like constant, purple high frequency arcs, which is further evidence that its a transformer

On the lighter circuit: it's not that the manufacturer does not want you to know what's inside, it's just that the high voltage components needs to be protected from moisture, decay of the material's dielectric properties, etc. Standard procedure in flyback transformers (eg old tv sets). Like what you do!

Reminds me of the circuit I used on my Tesla Coil / Slayer Exciter thingy. XD More specifically, I used a turbo version of the Joule Theif, let me tell you it drew more power then I expected. RIP 2N3904, you will be missed. The coil is like 5 inches tall, didn't expect it to pull a few amps, and also the back EMF was over 30V. It latched on and shorted a large NiMH pack of Eneloops, which at 12V easily dumped 100W through it. Vaporized the poor transistor instantly.

I have a bunch of large CCFL transformers pulled from old LCD TV's and was hoping they would be suitable for a HV supply but when hooked up to a flyback driver they don't produce an arc or even draw current. A flyback transformer or certain small CCFL transformers no problem, good arcs all the way down to 5V. But the larger ones I want to use the Mosfet in this does not even switch on and only thing I can conclude is that the driver is not suitable for them even though they are only single winding transformers.
