I'm very intrigued by this gathering of people! I, too am an introvert but worry that constant solo travel will be too lonely. I retire in a couple of years, and we'll start a remote consulting business, so this sounds perfect for me as a beginner digital nomad. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks Bronwyn! You don't need to be a full-on digital nomad to do a Hackers Paradise trip, but you do need to have some kind of remote career.

@Nora Dunn Great video! The social aspect of long-term travel is so tricky! This seems like a cool option to mix in every now and again.

I totally agree, Nik! To do a program like this a few times a year (or even just once a year, like Jennifer has done for the last 7 years with Hacker Paradise!) is a great way to develop a thriving social network of like-minded people who you can continue to travel with and get to know around the world in various scenarios.

I'm surprised we didn't meet. I live in Tallinn and typically attend these events. I moved from Edmonton in 2018. If you return, let me know. Also, I will be in Canada in May/June this year. Let's try to meet up.

I had left my company as a Poli Strat ( (consultant). Just had enough. And my husband was working as a Cyber Security architect in Canada but as you likely know, Canada is behind on such things. He had no way to advance careerwise. I said, Ok, you said you can work anywhere. Prove it. We had 6 kids to pay for and said OK. Where do we look? We looked at Malta, Sweden, London, and Estonia. He went for a trip to do a job interview and said "You will love Estonia". And we moved. Our kids wnated to finish school in Canada so we set that up. It's been hard. But it was worth it. Now we travel extensively (with kids and without). We sold all our belongings and moved. This was a considerably difficult thing with a huge house with 6 kids. Living here, we have accumulated more stuff but nothing substantial. This year our youngest graduates from High School and turns 18. To celebrate, we are taking her to Rome. Last summer we spent 2 weeks in the UK. Then Latvia. Then Sweden. Then Finland. The year before was 2 weeks in Germany, then Malta, then, then, then. This year after our trip to Canada, we are going to Baku and then Dubai. Next year we go to Expo in Japan and then do the Temple pilgrimage. We have hiked through all the Baltics. We will do the Camino. There's just so much to do. We wont give that up. @@NoraDunn

Dear Nora, in one video you recommended that in plane is better to use nose cleansing product (spray) to prevent pain in ears. Thank you very much! I usually did not have much of this problem, but few months ago when landing I felt that pain. Now before the trip I talked to my doctor and she prescribed me the product, I used it in plane (returned from the trip recently). And - it works! Thank you again for your videos and advice.
@NoraDunn

Thank you so much An! I'm glad my advice helped - yay!

Another technique, to be used carefully as it doesn't work for everyone, is to pinch both nostrils and try to blow out of your nose, gently and slowly. This forces your eustachian tubes to open. An old diver's trick that I picked up when I learned to scuba dive many years ago. But, again, be gentle as you can overdo it and experience pain. I wonder though if Sudafed would work the way that nasal spray does. It always works for me when I have a cold and sinus congestion. 30 minutes and I'm good.
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 5 месяцев назад
@@kovie9162 I've never been able to equalize with ease, so much so that I can't really scuba dive. But....I did recently discover Earplanes, which have been a game-changer! Magic earplugs. ;-)
@kovie9162
@kovie9162 5 месяцев назад
@@NoraDunn Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it as I occasionally have the same issue. Also with scuba, which is partly why I gave it up years ago (the others being that it's pretty expensive and living in NYC there's not that much to see nearby that justifies the expense).

Awesome video, Nora! I think this is what I'm looking for. My last trip was great but 4 weeks is a long time to be travelling solo and not having any social time. I've already had my first Zoom chat with Sara. Hoping to plan an HP trip in 2024!

Thanks! I'm curious - how does this compare to a hostel (besides the price)? I've stayed in hostels in my 20s and enjoyed them for the most part, despite being an introvert.
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 6 месяцев назад
The challenge with hostels is that most people who stay in hostels are on vacation. So the people you meet are out exploring the whole time, and if you need to juggle work it's more difficult. Although these days, some hostels are better equipped to accommodate remote workers (eg: Selina).
@Celeste-new49
@Celeste-new49 6 месяцев назад
@@NoraDunn Thanks! This makes sense. I had stayed in hostels when I was briefly nomadic in my 20s, but I was between hospitality jobs and didn't have to think about all the distractions affecting getting work done. I'm thinking of trying out all the options of housing when the time comes, including Hacker Paradise. I also don't like to "rough it" like I did in my 20s, so I'll be looking for my own room (and bathroom ideally) as often as possible. I'm fine with sharing everything else. Thanks for showing different options - take care

What's the new plan Nora? Are you still going to Africa with Remote Year?
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 7 месяцев назад
Sadly, no. I realized I had overextended myself and would not be fully present for the experience (at best; at worst I could burn out and become ill as I have done in the past). I will definitely experience Remote Year, just not this year. ;-)

I can totally understand! All the social overwhelm is my biggest hesitation in trying one of these colive/cowork programs@@NoraDunn , even though I'm very friendly and open, I'm a huge introvert. No way I could do any back to back, I'd have to try like you described. Good for you for knowing what you need and honoring that.

@@shannon2180 I still maintain that these programs are fantastic for introverts! But I way overextended myself with a trip covering 11 countries in 10 months - lol!
