Hacking a Harbor Freight Stool into a Paint Stand Turntable

I have a TON of cabinet doors and drawer faces to paint in the near future and wanted to develop a convenient way of finishing them without having to walk around the work piece as I am spraying the finish. I went on Instagram and looked up different painters and cabinet makers to see if I could find a reference to work from or any other good ideas. I found a guy that had a sweet paint turntable / tripod setup that allowed him to spin his work piece without having to touch it and and get fingerprints all over his hard work.
Check out John Coppola, and give him a follow, he deserves more than 1300 followers!

Anyway, I spent a decent amount of time trying to come up with a clever yet inexpensive spinning / tripod / painting / spraying / turntable thingy and it hit me that a cheap spinning stool from Harbor Freight would be a great starting point.
I used the base of a spinning mechanics stool and added a spacer to bring the height to a more comfortable level. Added some arms to spin the turntable without touching the freshly painted work piece and a removable top that can be easily replaced once it gets too gummy.
I have used this to spray some smaller pieces and it worked great, excited to use it for all the doors and drawer faces that I need to finish up!

I did something similar using the base of an old office computer chair. It was a tall stool model so it gets up to a nice height. It's height adjustable, it spins, and it's on wheels, which is nice. I originally just made it to be a little rolling tool table for my shop but quickly realized it's an awesome little finishing/painting table.

Great idea! Just today, I visited the local university's surplus store. They had old office chairs for low prices. At the time, I didn't realize I needed an old chair.

Nice video. Exactly what I am searching for. Need a rotating stand for spray painting. This will be my next DIY project. For me, I will probably make the handle removable to make it easier for storage. It will also give me the flexibility to use different length handles.

Interesting idea for a freestanding one. I made my own lazy susan out of some scrap MDF and a lazy susan bearing I bought at Home Depot (in the same aisle as the drawer slides and casters). I didn't make its own stand, I just set it on top of my workbench or sawhorses. Makes it easier to store it when you're not using it. Then I just use some small scraps of MDF as risers to keep it off the surface so you don't have the paint gluing the piece to the work surface.

You can also turn it upside down and use the stools feet and foot rest bars to hang things from to make a paint booth for small parts.

Spray adhesive some cabinet anti slip liner to the top for protection and the obvious of stoping the door from slipping when turning it

Hi Tyler try making the arms adjustable to take into account different substrate dimensions also give all the metal work light coating of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) this will allow easy cleaning of overspray good video by the way

Perhaps attaching the handles to the bottom half of the box would allow them to be further away from the workpiece. Ie, less chance of interfering with the paint gun. Nice build as always!

I'd put some toolbox trayliner or something non slip on the top of that round piece to keep whatever you're painting from slipping

I was thinking keep the work stationary and you and the spraying device rotate around it like on a merry go round...wait...that might be too big...wait...too much work to build...wait...too complicated...never mind. Love and watch all your videos.

I know...I know...suggestions in comments, but here's a couple of handle improvement suggestions: 1) have the be collapsible but only have them pivot in one direction. That way you can pull them but when you push them they fold up. This will save space when not in use, but will also let you have longer handles. 2) move the handles to the bottom or middle of the box so they don't interfere with the top as much.

Great idea for the price but you murder the seat option for no reason at all. Lol 😂 Great video 👍🏼

It would have gone in the trash in one piece or multiple. Needed the stand and was hoping to use the board but as I mentioned in the video it was not flat enough.

Thanks for the idea, Tyler! However, if I were to build it for myself, I believe a foot pedal activated low RPM RC Car motor (or variable speed motor) attached to the platform would be a much better idea in the long run. No need to grab on to bars and pivot it and all, plus it could potentially allow for a much more even layer of finish, although much more costly too.

Hey Tyler that is an awesome build. Like everything else, everybody has a suggestion to make it “better.” I suppose they all mean well. Anyway, good job, loved the video progression and editing. Moves right along in all the right places. (Umm, also, I think it stops being a tripod once it has 4 legs...) JK, lol. Thanks for the post!👍👍👍

I’d use some non-skid matting on the top of it so the “door” won’t shift when turning it. Just an idea. Great idea though.

I'm wondering why you didn't affix the handles to the sides of the box and let them protrude from there as opposed to the bottom of the table which doesn't seem nearly as stable.

Should have just attached the wings onto the plywood box. That way it's one less step to do when you need to replace the top.

You could add some painter's tripods to it. Chris from A Glimpse Inside made something very similar to this and he used those tripods.

or you could screw four drywall screws up threw the wood and place the item to be painted on the points of the screws.

I was thinking this as well.. also, mounting the arms to the box instead of the top circle would make the top easier to replace, and maybe more conveniently controlled. Maybe also find some way of using the dead space inside the box.
