HACKING UP MY GLOBAL GREEN POTHOS TO MAKE IT FULLER | Pruning, Water Propagation and Root Pruning

I am propagating my global green pothos so I can make a nice full pot by water propagating single leaf cuttings. I do a hard prune on the mother plant to hopefully restore it to a healthier plant again. I will also demonstrate how to propagate a pothos cutting if you've never cut one before. Thanks for watching.

I root prune every year to a lot of plants and I never have an issue. I do no more than a third, if I do a hard prune for like my Fiddle Fig I did this year , I did it in later part of June. They say this is the time the plant has stored enough energy and still has time before winter, so best time for plant to not go in to shock. Smaller plants I don’t stick to this schedule as much but I try. I use coir and other substrates and not peat so I don’t get the roots wrapping around the pots any longer so I can pretty much release the roots before I cut. Thanks for talking about this more people should do it and not worry !!!!

Wow. I’d be so nervous to make a root cake like that! Glad your golden pothos responded well. At one point I need to do this too. I really don’t want to size mine up anymore. My global green pothos lost some of its variegation at the base but many of the new leaves are now also showing some cream variegations mixed in. They’re so pretty!

That root cut hurt my soul and went against everything I have ever known about roots being fragile 🤣 My global is almost too bushy, I need to get a different pole for it, I've got it on moss but really don't like it, I've got my adansonii on a 1x1 and it sticks to it way better than the moss and doesn't take up as much space. My global is climbing and trailing BC there is so much of it. My Golden and neon are in the same pot, with a moss pole but they're far less mature. I use my global in my other cuttings to help them root faster and that crazy truck really seems to work! I'll be putting those cuttings in with the Golden and neon BC why not have a big ole pothos salad 🤣
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
I have now done aggressive root prunes on my syngonium chiapense and golden pothos....they are both getting new growth. My thinking is you can't realistically think keep up sizing forever lol Root prune is good at controlling the size of the plant. I also agree about the wood. A few of mine have already attached to the wood and not to the moss/burlap pole

In your opinion....is it better for you to root in sphagnum moss or perlite ???
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
Hey Dianne. Both are great rooting mediums. I guess the answer is which ever you prefer. For me, the moss gets tangled in the roots easy and can be a bit of a pain when eventually potting into soil. There are plants, like pothos, that I actually prefer to root in water first. I use both water and perlite for my propagations.

Hey there, loved this video. I’m thinking of doing the same thing to my pothos I’ve just been nervous about the propagation. One question though, have you ever run in to issue moving your propagations directly from straight water to soil? Do they go through a wilting phase than start producing new foliage? Thanks!
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
I really haven't had too many issues with pothos, but I have had some wilting with a philodendron brasil. Just keep the soil from drying out for the first couple weeks and then cut back the watering. I was terrified the first few times, but pothos are the perfect plant to start with. Even try a small section with a few leaves to try it out and get comfortable with how it responds. Don't be scared....YOU CAN DO THIS!

Hey Sheila 👋 I did end up watering it that day. Sometimes I wait a day for all the cut ends to heal, but with pothos I'm not too worried about anything happening to it 🤣 they are almost indestructible.

Hi Jeff, I have a large root bound golden pothos that I really don't want to put in a bigger pot. It's high up and too heavy as it is. Do you think I could root prune without pruning the vines right back or would that be too much plant for the cut roots to support ?
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 года назад
Hello Morag. You can definitely try and root prune without cutting any vines, but I did have someone reach out and say that if you root prune you generally need to remove some foliage as the smaller root system won't handle all those leaves. Leave it alone and see how the plant responds, but I think a small chop wouldn't hurt it any, but that's just me 🤣
@MrFlipsk8boards
@MrFlipsk8boards Год назад
Should you always prune in between nodes (leaving a bit of stem)? And if so why? Does the mother plant grow new leaves from this leftover stem? Also would you say this is the same for String of Hearts?
@Stettafire
@Stettafire Год назад
The reason why is that at the cut line it may begin to die back and rot. Some die back on a cutting is pretty normal but if the node dies the propagation will fail. So leaving a bit of stem increases the chances of success Also I do think you can adopt a similar method for strong of hearts, but you gotta put it in soil or put the cuttings in wet kitchen roll (paper towel if your US). I think just putting them in water will make string of hearts rot
