I've been doing something very similar with cuttings from my mothers plant. I took it as a memento when she passed. It is over 25 years later and I have such beautiful plants that I gift to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. A piece of mom seems to be living indefinitely.
Oh my gosh I've been propagating my pothos wrong this whole time! I was one of those that had a long vine sticking out of water. Then I'd plant that and wonder why my pothos never filled out! Awesome! I'm going to go cut it down and propagate it properly! Thank you!
@@Big.Blink.Investo.Bishhh I did propagate using the method in this video and they all turned out great! I don't have any vines yet, but all my plants have grown new leaves and they look so full and healthy!
Did exactly as he suggested. Take an existing plants vines/runners, and snub/cut each leaf/branch before and after. Put into the water, in stacks of 6-8. Make sure the water is changed every day as you remember, or install into a tank with a pump/aerator. Put on kitchen counter, warm air. Do not put on sill that is 60 degs or less. Indirect light is fine, temps is critical. Should see group of root growth in 2-3 weeks. Key is temp, water replaced every 2-3 days or more. Put into a 4 or 5" planter. Fining plants look great in 4", so put 12-15 cuttings. 5" planter gets nearly 20 cuttings. Plant/pot looks great, and thus the crown looks great! Only difference I did was I planted into dirt/soil, and forgot about 'hydroponics'. Never looked back, mine are rocking on right now.
I just wanted to loop back here and say THANK YOU! Last year I did this and I have endless Potho's now and a indoor jungle here in Michigan. I also have shipped many to friends in TX & CA to share. Absolutely hands down the best video on Potho's propagation! ❤
By far the best and simplest explanation! I watched it a few months back and propogated as told. I now have massive bushy pothos, never had to buy a new pothos plant! Thank you!
Ha! Me too, with the addition of a calathea I just bought I'm considering adding a humidifier to my plant room too. All I'll need is a parrot and a python to recreate the Amazon! 🤣
Is it just me or whenever I try to find out something about plants i prefer some old person explaining these things to me rather than a young one? Maybe I'm biased but I think elderly ppl tend to know more :'D Edit: Since english is not my first language, I should have reframed the statement a bit to give a clearer explanation. This guy here reminds me of my old biology teacher, who showed my that plants are not 'mere' plants and that more people should enjoy gardening. This is not an attack against younger people - they just often have long introductions in their videos which annoy me. I'm not saying every old man on this world knows everthing about everthing - that certainly is not possible - but in my case, the older the teacher , the easier it is to grabmore advanced topics. They have a way of explaining, which I admire. Stop getting angry at an internet comment, guys.
Excuse me?! I am now about to let you in on a little secret! 🧐 I'm 34. I am knowledgeable! And lots of people that I know, whom are older than I, don't know shit about shit! I've dated men who don't know the difference between a ratchet and a wrench! Or women (age does not apply here) who can't make KD and grilled cheese!!! So I agree! I believe that you are biased! That is all. Happy planting everyone!
Great job of showing and explaining. To the point without unnecessary chitchat, yet thorough enough for a beginner like me to follow (except I put in soil as I don't have a hydroplanter). Thank you!
You are clear as a bell.....I followed exactly what you said and my cuttings are growing roots...I really appreciate your help because I had this plant for 20 years and one stringy vine that would grow a few leaves and then they would wither again. I have always had a black thumb so this is really great. Thanks again, this is much appreciated.
Glad you liked it. Pothos love our hydroponic pots! And growing is easy with our system - water once every 2-3 weeks and the system does the rest. Simple and easy to use - no pumps, electricity etc. Check them out at www.easygrohydro-store.com/
I tried something that worked beyond my expectations. I followed the lessons available here, then after cutting and bunching them I twist tied them to keep the bunch together. Before putting them in the water I put a fish tank bubbler in each container and run the bubbler for 15 minutes a couple of times a day. The new roots are very robust and survive and thrive very well.
I had a long vine sitting in water for what felt like forever without any real signs of growth. I came across your video and cut my pothos as you have shown and all of the cuttings started growing roots very quickly! Thanks for this video!
I'm so glad I ran into this video! My pothos is getting leggy and i want it to be full. When I do the trimming I was hoping to propagate the cuttings but I hadn't found a video with clear details of how to do it. This is the BEST video by far! I'm so excited to try this out this weekend! Thanks for posting!
Any member of the philodendron family tends to get leggy with age. Also, better light helps grow fuller plants. You can take cutting as I describe and plant them back in the existing pot to make a fuller plant. JH
I was one of those people who had the vine hanging down... for years I might add. In any case I saw this video and followed your directions. Oh my gosh, I now have lush cuttings with an extensive root system in a very short time. Thanks for sharing this knowledge as I will never have those trailing vines soakjng in water again.
THANK YOU for addressing how often the water needs to be changed. I have watched SO MANY videos on all sorts of propagation and NO ONE has addressed the water change.
I watched many videos on how to do this and yours was by far my favorite. I propagated today and got about 30 cuttings!! Thank you for bringing us this knowledge, please keeping making great videos!!
I followed the propagation method and repotted to soil after roots were established. I have bushy Pothos plants now. I am so happy to have watched this video. Thank you, sir!
I have a lot of questions, hope you can help me! 1) its been about 4 weeks since i propagated my pothos but their roots are nowhere as long or as good as yours. Should i leave them in this position for a fortnight? 2) Can we transplant our mature cuttings from water to soil? 3) is it necessary to use clay pebbles in our water transplant? Or can we just put them in as is? 4) in any sort of pot we put them in, shouldn't it have a hole in the bottom? 5) after we have transplanted our pothos, can we then put them anywhere we like? Like in our rooms or just any other place except the one where we propagated them? 6) when my pothos starts to grow vines and get bigger, should i buy a new bigger pot for it? Or should i keep trimming it and throwing away the leaves? Thanks for your time!
I have been searching endlessly for a video to explain to me what to do with my devil's ivy plant. I've had issues with the roots over crowding, not know if they were too long or how to propagate. UGH! This video has changed my life. LOL thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your demonstration was so clear and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing. I am now going to plant my satin pothos as you instructed.
I have had pothos and I remember having them growing up and I Never knew this. I am propagating pothos at work and I am going to start doing it your way> I have these lonely straggly thing in pots.. Thanks!
I don't know how many times I've shared & re-watched this video myself since I found it a couple of years ago. It has changed the way I propagate Pothos forever. I also appreciate informative to the point videos that remain interesting throughout. This is one of those well done vids.
Excellent video! I watched your video last year and like others, I've been doing it wrong for years. So I purchased 2 neon pothos for about 17 bucks each. I really felt the price was a bit high, but the neons are hard to find here. I've made about 15 baby plants to date, thanks to you. The only thing I do differently is I add root hormones to the water while rooting, and when I transfer to soil, I get an amazing amount of new leaves. So thank you for making me the crazy plant lady.
I did this! to a point! I made all my cuttings just like you directed, I changed my water every 3 days or so, it took mine about a month and a half to have ALL of the leaves have at least a little roots, SOME have LONG roots (2 or 3 inches...long for in a cup)….anyway, I don't have a hydroponic set up and had planned on putting them in soil anyway. So, today, that's what I did. The cuttings have THRIVED really wall in the water! I hope the do AS well now in soil, I'm sure it's a big adjustment for them from getting their requirements straight from water like drinking from a straw for them, to extracting it and needed nutrients (which I bet there's LOTS more nutrients in the potting mix they're in now anyway) out of the soil they live in now.
Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge. I’m so excited. My Pothos cuttings are now in water and the wait begins. I absolutely cannot wait. Thanks again.
Wow!!! Now I have got to be honest about this video. He was straight to the point! Just when I was about to fast forward on this video, I was mesmerized right from the beginning. I have seen many videos and none quite like this video. I just recently find myself having to fast forward some videos that take too long to get to the point. This is a game changer sir and you deserve the RU-vid Award or something, hands down. You dropped the mic on this one 🎤🎤🎤🎤!! Great job!!! Everything was on point! Shoot idk yawl, but is it me because I thought I smelled some chocolate or coffee beans when he put those brown things in the pot lol 😂 🤣😂🤣!!! I gotta go back and watch it again!! Thank you and be blessed all.
This is your 3rd video I’ve watched and I too have always put a long vine into water to root! Never again! I’m so happy to find out at the end of the video that I can still use all my hand painted and favorite pots with your system! I’m sold - going to your website to get started. 😊
I'm so glad I saw this before propagating my Pothos and trying the several-leaf method. Each of my leaves grew new roots. Thank you for the information!
I love his idea on growing. I'm desperate to keep my indoor jungle alive for the winter. Luckily pothos is pretty good in any kind of light (or so I believe hahaha)
I just started three beautiful bushy plants because of your video. THANK YOU! I've been searching for a useful video for the longest time. Thank you so much for making this!
I'm not doing the hydroponics thing, but I did jump off the ledge and trimmed 2 of my 3 pothos plants and cut the vines up like you did and letting them sit in some water. I can't deny that it made me nervous to do it. But some of the vines looked spindly anyway with large areas of no leaves along the vine. Those are the ones I trimmed off because they didn't look nice. I'll see what they'll look like in three weeks from now. I hope they will root well. When they do, I'm going to plant them back into the soil of the same pots as the parent plants to make them look fuller. Right now the center of 2 of my pothos don't look nice at all. Lots of empty space in there. I want them to look more lush.
Your plan is a good one. Try replacing the water for the cuttings with fresh every couple of days.Wait until roots are about 2" long before replanting. Use a pencil to dig a hole in the soil. Plant as deep as possible. Use 2-3 cuttings per opening. Long, spindly vines happen when the light levels are low. Higher light grows thicker, more compact plants. Always avoid direct hot sun though. Good Lick!
The cut leaves are still alive and perky, the roots have not gotten longer yet, they're still nodes so far. But the leaves haven't drooped or shriveled, so that's good. It's only been a week so far, so not much action. We'll see what happens in another couple of weeks.
Sometimes roots take time to sprout. keep replacing the water with fresh every week. Don't use water from a water softener. New roots will be coming along.
Thank you! My pothos has grown substantially and I'd been unable to locate a common-sense, easy to follow, propagation video, until now. Just trimmed my mother plant and now have two containers of cuttings. Can't wait to see how things develop over the next three weeks.
Its truly heartwarming to read how enthusiastic and satisfied people are, simply by growing plants. If only more people would do it and get off the streets where violence and destructive forces are rampant.
Thankyou so much. My dear Mom is in a facility and is a major plant lady.....and this technique of propagation is brilliant.....I was one of those who just plopped a strand in water and waited.....now I can do it....quickly and efficiently and Mom will have her garden even if she can't have me until this virus goes away.....blessings.
Great video - is there an update? I would love to know, how does the parent plant respond to the pruning? How long will it take the parent plant to re-vine?
Also, my daughter is a biology major and has raved about hydroponics for years!! You should have the link to your website below in the descrption box. I had do dig deep in the comments for it. can't wait to see he face when she sees a few of those bad boys around the house as I try to convert all my plants slowly!!
I bought two pothos half a year ago and both are just single long vines. I do love them but I'm wanting a fuller looking plant and watching this video has made me realise they needed a trim so that I can propogate! Just set up my first cuttings and can't wait to see the results.
I've had pothos around my whole life, my mom has one in her kitchen that has vines over 10 feet long! But I've always wondered how people got such full plants this was super helpful! Totally going to do this with mine now
This is a wonderful video thank you!! My cuttings rotted beautifully and are ready to transplant. Instead of using pebbles can I use potting mix? Do I have to soak in a solution? Thank you!
This guy is my duuuudeee!!! He has led me to so many successful plant propegations with the tips and advice in this video. I share it with all my plant loving friends whenever I get the opportunity to. :)
The sound of the scissors gave me the WORST anxiety! 😂 I've had my longest born pothos for over 6 years now. Its taller than me but not as full as it once was. I'm so nervous to do this and will probably cry but it definitely needs done. Thank you so much for your straight forward and direct way of explaining! Wish me luck!
sorry about that sound! about your plant - start off by trying just a few cuttungs. you don't have to trim the whole thing at once. I can (almost) guarrantee it will grow back from where you cut it. you can also return the rooted cutings back into the same pot as the mother plant for a fuller plant. these cuttings will grow in soil too!
hi, I have roots for 7 cuttings out of 10 in 2 weeks thank you so much for your video..it helped me a lot.. can i pot them in normal potting mix and what size of pot is needed if its potting mix???
Personally, I have used normal potting mix for all my pothos plants and they thrive. However, I live in a humid region where I don’t have to water them for months at a time so idk if that has something to do with it.
I have a this long vine that withers very easily- i cut it and put the whole thing in water😂 From your video, realize ive been doing most things wrong. Thank you- please post more video.
Thank you so much for the information!! I am in love with pothos I love how they grow and there foliage is so beautiful I have two glasses so far propagating away!! By the end of the year I'll have at least 4 brand new pothos plants
Hey Jerry! I did it. I propagated my plants after watching your video! Thank you! I have a question - would you ever put diluted fertilizer into the water while rooting? Will that make it root faster or is that a waste of fertilizer?
THIS IS SUCH A LOVELY VIDEO THAT I HAVE SEEN IT ATLEST 8 TIME. CAN U PLEASE TELL ME WHAT KIND OF FERTILIZER YOU USE ON UR MONEY PLANTS. BEST REGARDS, KIRAN FROM KARACHI-PAKISTAN
Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to save a pothos that I got as a gift. It was beautiful and lush initially but got infected with mold, dying vines, gnats etc. After about 6 months of continuous death, I ended up with 3 long vines that were on their last limb. Did this propagation tonight!! Already looks hopeful 🙏🏽 Thanks again. #2021
I love your very clear, straight to the point instructions in this video. After you plant in the clay pebbles, how often do you water the plant since it's quite different from soil?
@@mrsbouch10Just leave it be, it will probably grow new healthy leaves. If it's an older plant I might cut of some really damaged leaves to encourage new growth.
Tina Boucher yellowing and black spots mean overwatering.. not sure how to combat that if you’re keeping them in water. Maybe you need to change it out more often to allow for oxygen? You may need to just wait it out.
I've followed your method totally!! I even ordered some pots, leca and water gauges from y'all :-) I'm so excited! it's been about a month of root growing and they look amazing. I'm soaking my leca currently and will repot in a couple hours. thank you so much!!
