You say the vase is too weak, but remember there's going to be a dirt filling. You only need to worry about tensile strengths of the material for containing that dirt, which will far exceed what's needed to work.

well I haven't had much time to delve into it yet but they seem to also be using a 3D support structure. Very similar to how balsa models are made, a balsa wood structure with a film over it.

Yes, you have to have internal support for a wing. The interesting part is how the Gcode pathing allows the printer to to do a vase-path while still printing internal supports. I have a Prusa i3 MK2 and they now come with a Spitfire in about 25 Gcode files that you can print. I printed one part (of 4) for the left wing to see how it would come out. It's very nice actually and I learned a lot just watching the pathing the machine took.

Seems like Vase Mode is perfect for making a positive for mold making. If you used it for helmets, you could then make a rubber mold of it and make fiberglass shells. I might have to try that as soon as I get my larger printer running.

Neat! That 2mm nozzle is crazy! I've been using vase mode to make transparent optical parts like light diffusers (fancy lampshades for my lightsabers) to prevent the 'zippers' you normally get that become really obvious when back-lit. I'm even learning to use the layer lines as "microlenses" to pull some _very_ interesting tricks. Practically holographic.

@VenomTheCat
@VenomTheCat 7 лет назад
No you can't print 2mm with 1.75mm filament the person in the video is using a Ultimaker and that runs 3mm filament. There is a 1.2mm nozzle for the E3d volcano that you can use with 1.75mm filament
@VictorGarciaR
@VictorGarciaR 7 лет назад
Oh ok, thx 4 the answer. My printer is a cheap aliexpress kit so I cant really get good details. The acrilic not-so-rigid frame and the feeding mechanism make it useless in the tiny details when printing. Lets not talk about the endstop switches, secured with 1 bolt so they can rotate a little bit each time the printer homes itself. However printing faster with a wider nozzle sounds so nice. If I cant get the details at least I can print big stuff. I was going to replace the extruder assembly anyway so I may get a volcano. Extra question: I am going to change the extruder and the direct drive mechanism, making it 3mm is worth it? Just focusing in printing faster with a huge nozzle
@MakersMuse
@MakersMuse 7 лет назад
The trick with large diameter nozzles is you have to melt and cool a LOT more plastic than usual - so your heating and cooling must be really powerful. Usually, you have to run very slow so it can keep up which somewhat defeats the purpose. I would use your current machine to start printing parts and upgrades for itself or even an entirely new printer :) It'll improve itself over time.
@pacovasda5955
@pacovasda5955 6 лет назад
All good stuff, thank you. but when your stuff gets so light don't overlook weighting it down. Just a chunk of metal or sand or something in the bottom to keep it heavy is somewhat common in manufacturing if you're going to make a pen and pencil cup you kind of need to weigh it down

Thanks Angus! I'm in the process of making a cosmetic leg cover for my Wife's prosthetic leg and this will save be BOAT LOADS of time in test prints while we try and nail down the final shape! Love the experiments! Id like to suggest one, I noticed that when I print some models the cooler that I have on my printer blows air in such a way to whistle (similar to blowing over the top of a bottle). I always wondered if a model could be designed to play a tune while it printed. It most likely would look like a bunch of tubes in the end, but it would make for a fun experiment. Love the Videos! Thanks again!
@someonemaybe3947

How did it go? I would have printed a brace flat on the bed and then dunked it in hot water and apply it to the leg to make it mold onto the shape of it and brace it beast. Side note no it doesn't feel hot when applied just warm.

Each point printed quickly and was very strong and very smooth. I think that's roughly the sweet spot because .9mm walls are pretty strong -- I might be able to force it to get to 1.2mm walls using the same nozzle as I'm using the bondech qr, so it can really pump out the plastic.

I don't like vase mode since the products are so flimsy fragile and non-transportable without care. Thus what I want is a I multi wall vase mode. I think this may be possible like so: The ramp just needs to be distributed on the last inner outline, then the last outer outline then the last inner and so forth. The center outlines do not raise z height.

Im a subscriber and I "LOVE YOUR INFORMATIVE VIDEOS"!! hands down, but! I really wish you would provide an approximation of how long it took you to print items you talk about. "Example: this took about 2hrs 15 min" every printer is different and based on the settings you use. Something like that.... :)

When I was taking Spanish courses in middle school, I kept getting confused by the video--every time it would say the word in English, followed by the Spanish translation, it would say something about an ultra vase. I never knew what this vase was, and thinking it was something important to the culture (I mean, come on... It was not just any vase, it was an ULTRA VASE!) I asked my now partner some 20+ years later, "Hon, what is the ultra vase?" to which he replied, "Huh?" I said, "To people of Spanish decent, what is the ultra vase? What does it look like? Have you seen one?"... Grinning from ear to ear, he said "Do you mean Otra Vez?" "Yes!", I exclaimed, "I can't say it as well as you, and I'm sorry, but what IS it? In middle school, they referenced the vase after EVERY SINGLE WORD!"... "It's otra vez. It means 'again' or 'once more'"... I cannot believe that I had wondered about this non-existent vase for so damn long. Someone needs to design the ULTRA VASE for me. It's my Spanish unicorn, and I need it in my life. Turns out

SUPERB video, thanks!! I use Cura as my slicer, just because it is the first one I found for my Anet A8. I LOVE "vase" mode. It is in quotes because Cura calls it "Spiralise Outer Contour". What I love doing with it is simple rectangles, with no top - as drawer or parts organizers. By printing fairly wide - 0.4 or 0.5, it is sufficiently strong.

Looked everywhere, but I can't find anyone experimenting with _HALF_-VASE-MODE prints ...where the nozzle reverses direction along the same path. If needed these could have small loops on either end to avoid jerking the layer back up from the corner.

Hey Angus, interesting you should experiment with extended utilization of vase mode printing as it is close to a subject matter I recently stumbled upon here on RU-vid. Curious if you're aware of non-planar slicing? Have you seen this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gmePlcU0TRw.html ? What are your thoughts on this. Definitely a long winded set up to get it going, but it's rather fascinating. EDIT: Just realized I'm 3 years late to this party...would still be interested to know if you've seen anything on non-planar slicing.

Hey Question!? If vase mode is limited in strength inherently, what happens when you use a larger diameter nozzle such as .6 or .8? Will this allow for EVEN FASTER vase mode with even more strength?

We use both pronunciations of "vase". We grew up around the Beltway using the UK pronunciation IF the vase was worth over $50 USD. I don't suppose anyone's actually spoken Spoken Queen's English since 5th grade or so, then puberty trashed the rest. anyway, thanks for the info. It's what I needed to know! Cheers

Why does everybody pretend PLA is actually biodegradable, its not and every self respecting 3D printer expert knows it. The only people that say PLA is biodegradable, are people marketing/selling PLA, or idiots.

I know it would take quite a bit of doing, but could a 3D printer potentially be set up to have the part printed in a water-cooled system? So that some of the lines that drooped really bad on the overhangs cooled much quicker?
@LMvdB02
@LMvdB02 7 лет назад
That would be very difficult
@LMvdB02
@LMvdB02 7 лет назад
You would have to seal all electronics and make sure the water stays just under the hot end
@jeric_synergy8581

That level of complexity seems unlikely, but how about modulating the cooling fan speed? I assume it's not always at 100% (is it?). Rather than introducing a (conductive) liquid into the system, a puff of cooled GAS might be adequate for problem areas: compressed C02 when released is quite cool, readily available, and dissipates quickly. I don't know (and can't determine) if this cooling would make ant significant difference, but it's GOT to be easier (or at least the same difficulty) than plumbing water into your 3d printer. That'd be an interesting topic to have covered.
@Goinsdarkness
@Goinsdarkness 5 лет назад
@@jeric_synergy8581 this is just one form of 3d printing (FDM).. Look into SLA. It works by dropping a build platter into a vat of uv sensitive resin, then using various light filters, flash a uv light through a layer and curing it to the base. The base then retracts a step and the next layer is done. Far more detailed, but pricey.

...if you are printing 0.2 layers on 0.4 nozzle and 45 degs is recommended maximum overhang, and then you switch to 0.1 layer on the same nozzle, it is quite obvious you can achieve higher overhangs. Because you can overlay TWO layers now over the same vertical distance as only one, before. So, you can "step out" twice over the same vertical distance and still have exactly as much support from the layer below as previously. I actually only realized that after watching this part of the video when you compare the domes.

"Vase-mode" could still be improved, if a software engineer would add the capability for "multiple-walls", and/or "separated-walls, w/ a zig-zag infill". Obviously the toolpath-planar would be a bit more sophisticated , but it seems doable.

I hate it when people say vazz. it is pronounced 'vace' like in base, and Chase in American English. I know you speak Wrong English (lol jk) but it still aggravates me. I spent several years of my childhood trying to figure out what the fuck a vazz was.

Try doing the large nozzle print in vase mode with a Lulzbot TAZ with the Moarstruder, I just put together the Moarstruder which you have to 3D print the parts of the toolhead and put in the extruder. It uses a 1mm nozzle. I will experiment with vase mode as well, seems interesting.

Okay...so I have no clue how any of this shit works. But with your hexagonal dome, what would happen if you separated each layer of differing layer and upped the thickness a bit each step. So you could start with pretty thin material, then make it thicker and thicker so you wouldn't get that gradual thinning and eventually spider-webbing. Again, never used a 3D printer in my life, and my CAD experience is minimal and limited to CNC mills

I love vase mode, have printed tons of models for over 4 years. Only for vase mode I still prefer Slic3r to generate gcode over Simplify3D. I've got so many code errors using S3D and always got better results in Slic3r. Angus I'd like you opinion about it. Thanks for the always nice 3DP tips !

aww you shouldn't have to explain why you talk funny! Lol hey we all talk funny to someone else! my mom is from Rhode Island and man does she talk weird! we even have her say things like " I parked the car in Harvard yard" but it's all good fun! this world would be so much less interesting if we all talked the same. I'm fixing to git my first printer via Banggood in a few weeks and I'm very interested in vase mode! I've already been looking through my engineering books from college that deal with material science looking for odd things like your hollow cone! hey Angus what's the difference between a "vahs" and a vase? $1000! Lol Great video! I hope there are more.

when using a .6 nozzle should you use a layer height of .25 and a line width of 1 or 1.2?? maybe 40mm /sec speed and increase temp approx 10 degrees pla/petg... looking to build a strong vase that still has nice detail...thanks

Umm... did i do something wrong? i tried the overhang print in vase mode with 0.2mm layer heights and a 0.4 mm nozzle (my regular one) and it completed the print. as in all of it, including the one on thin air. I did print it at 60% scale as i'm running out of filament but this is the only difference between what i and +Maker'sMuse did.

I do not understand 90% of the comments. What are y'all going on about? I hear nothing wrong with the way he's pronouncing vase. Maybe I'm missing out due to my inability to hear regional accents? Imagine running a soda through a fine filter until it is almost water, then drinking it. The taste is so faint that despite your knowledge of its presence, you cannot tell what the drink was previously. Now do that with accents. You all sound the same, and I understand you all equally. Would someone *please* help me understand what I am not hearing, or at least why I'm not hearing whatever it is everyone else is able to?

One other "interesting" feature of Vase Mode: If you crank up the speed and print lots of curves on a large printer .... it's a test of your firmware's compute speed. Put another way - you may also want a 32 bit board for that super duper ultimate 2 M tall Vase Mode printer :)
