Did you spot the fruits? I hope this video helped you -- I'm VERY passionate about teaching people to take care of their work life balance and I'm routing for you to be more upfront with your manager and hold yourself accountable. 🙌
All great advices! 👏 A lot of it overlaps with what I used to tell my junior team members when I was an eng manager 😊 I kinda wish someone told me that when I was at the beginning of my career - could avoid some 16h days and too many unnecessary meeting at weird hours 🙈
Great video - I currently have a difficult time handling my work life balance. Mainly because everyday is different and some days I'm very productive and others... not so much. I try to make up for the hours i wasn't that productive by working longer hours or maybe doing a bit of work over the weekend. Not being productive could be a symptom that I don't have the right goals, as you mentioned in the beginning. For reference i was at facebook for a few years and moved to google recently.
You don't need to work crazy hours to be successful - it's all about the quality of what your produce/contribute and being able to understand what the priorities of your job is. Also being able to communicate by giving realistic deadlines and targets will build confidence. Once that confidence is gained with your team and superiors, you can manage your time as you see fit.

I've given the same advise to entry level engineers without any implications on the success of their careers. Actually the opposite: they learn how to estimate earlier and are more efficient from the start.
@@ywueeee It's definitely intimidating initially but once you figure it out and build more confidence that you can actually get MORE done with fewer hours, it becomes easier :)
