Hacking yourself: Dave Asprey at TEDxConstitutionDrive

Dave Asprey, founder of The Bulletproof Executive, is a Silicon Valley investor and technology entrepreneur who spent 15 years and over $300,000 to hack his own biology. Dave lost 100 pounds without counting calories or excessive exercise, used techniques to upgrade his brain by more than 20 IQ points, and lowered his biological age while learning to sleep more efficiently in less time. Learning to do these seemingly impossible things transformed him into a better entrepreneur, a better husband, and a better father. From private brain EEG facilities hidden in a Canadian forest to remote monasteries in Tibet, from Silicon Valley to the Andes, Dave used hacking techniques and tried everything on himself, obsessively focused on discovering the answers to this one persistent question: What are the simplest things you can do to be better at everything?
**
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

All the negative comments are making me sad. I don't think his message is "look at me, I'm better than you". The message is "I was weak, but I tried these cool things and they helped me out. Wanna try?".

Let's see you guys come close and show all of us what brilliant scientific researchers you guys are. I will greatly appreciate your time and effort to make man kind that much bettet. Till then! good luck on your journey and I look forward to buying all of your amazing books and products!

David Carrizosa The problem is that Asprey hasn't demonstrated any of that either. People expect a certain standard from TED and they are angry that this guy is way below the mark. Don't fault them for using critical thinking.
@DC2022AZ
@DC2022AZ 9 лет назад
I completely understand. I really enjoy TED material. Critical thinking is one thing and trash talking is another. Not faulting them for their beliefs or thoughts, that's cool. BUT speaking like they've done more than him and talking trash about his work with 100% certainty Dave's work is incorrect or trash. Well if they talk that way let's see their proof of that. It's childish to express feelings and opinions like that.
@namewithheld7835
@namewithheld7835 9 лет назад
David Carrizosa the fact they say he's 100% wrong, or talking out the side of their face is proof they don't understand much. No one can be 100% of the time right, or wrong. Now that's bullshit.
@sateIIitepilot
@sateIIitepilot 9 лет назад
David Carrizosa So anyone who disagrees has to write a book, lol. Well if that's the case you must always agree with everything or have written hundreds of books. I'm neutral but what he said about losing weight doesn't completely ring true or what he said about sleep. I do know you can lose weight or gain muscle and still junk out every now and then from experience but most people know this. I also know there is a certain way of processing your food that optimizes better brain function but thats because I've read books by scientists and people with degrees in these fields and tried it out.

He has found the ultimate way of selling products: Step 1: Scare people into thinking that everything they r doing is wrong. Step 2: Support ur claims with pseudoscience and cherry picked studies. Step 3: Gain trust by telling things everyone knows r useful - yoga, meditation, exercise, healthy diet etc. And finally, the last step - the money making step Step 4: In addition to doing all those beneficial things - buy his products! - Brilliant Salesmanship!! -- I just wish even 1/3 of what he's saying was true...

The sleep portion struck a cord with me. I spent the first few months of 2016 doing my best to get 7-8 hours of sleep, but I could never stay sleep. And I never felt good after 8. I eventually realized that my body didn't want or like that many hours. I actually run better on 6-6.5 hours.

I think his message is that you can sleep as long or as little as you'd like. Just don't let it get in the way of your life and to work just as hard as you sleep and you can still acheive anything you'd like with the amount of time you choose to sleep.

Dave Asprey's system represents the next step in human evolution. I've read his book, Head Strong and it integrates all the best practices from all the different types of diets (including keto), but his system addresses one thing that nobody else has addressed before, that is brain fog and how to clear away brain fog, to improved mental performance.
@eggheadeinstein
@eggheadeinstein 9 лет назад
I love all the cynicism on this forum because it helps explain why so many people don't make changes all throughout their lives. Change comes from a starting point of belief. I'm not defending anyone, including this guy, but if your tendency is to criticize you might want to question how much information you may be dismissing that might help. I will say this... once someone within our extended family lost 80lbs by making only one change.. that was giving up carbonated colas... his cousin did so within a year.. topping him.. the guy went from 230 to 130.. and i of course did not recognize him. Last year my other cousin went from a 180 down to 100 lbs... she is 5 feet tall and did it by moving to France and living with a family that carried no processed garbage. Now if three people close to me could splice their weight so drastically, and so quickly, there obviously are indeed some simple hacks that can work. Whether they can work for everyone is questionable. I guess if there are no fat meth, coke or heroin users the answer would be yes, nobody is fat due to genes alone. Not that i have anything against fat people incidentally.... when you've been skinny your whole life you don't even notice weight, its like an non-issue... that is, for men at least. Women, that's a collective brain disorder fed by Madison Avenue if you ask me. Plenty of obese live long, plenty of skinny die young, and when I think about it and take an average I've got to admit the heavier people generally seem happier. And to tell you the truth... honestly.. those three cousins who lost weight all seemed happier before they lost the weight. This presenter spoke in generalities, but I'm sure he's got a lot of tricks of his sleeve he didn't lay out for everyone for free here. Not to mention everything works over time. I cut out dairy in my twenties and bang, my energy levels were restored back to when I was a child. Now i stay away from white flour which tends to fog my brain and make me too tired. By the way if you are under 30, fuck you, you don't need this until 40... go away and have fun and don't let age get you down until it comes calling. I can't stand when young people worry about health over worrying about making the best of their youth. You don't go to a party to plan how to get home, you wait until closing time arrives or you won't have any damned fun.

Dave is right. You only need ONE INTENSE WHOLE BODY VIBRATION workout per week. But you should do LIGHT EXERCISE every day or every other day. Yoga, simply standing on a WBV plate at a low intensity for 5 minutes, BJJ (roll at 30-50% and focus on only using technique and using your strength to the absolute minimum necessary level. This will actually make you WAY BETTER AT BJN), stuff like that. But yeah, I was suspicious of his "only one intense workout per week" claim but I've been getting better results in muscle growth than ever before (with exercises to exhaustion on a WBV plate, but DON'T DO THAT YOUR FIRST TIME ON A WBV PLATE. EASE INTO IT. IT'S CRAZY INTENSE FOR YOUR MUSCLES TO CONTRACT 30 TIMES PER SECOND. EASY TO BURN OUT YOUR CNS.)

dairy products are not good. none of them. that includes dairy butter - it contains oxidized cholesterol (the bad type, a lot of it) due to the process by which it is created. It doesn't matter what the cow ate, or how much "massages" it got. Fats shouldn't be exposed to air before ingesting in general. Milk is supposed to be ingested directly from the breast. But cow dairy is optimized for calves, and is actually harmful for humans. There are surprisingly strong correlations of Dairy milk consumption with many illness like diabetes, cancer, etc. Dave, you really have to take dairy out of the bulletproof diet.

I agree with everything except for the beans and legumes. They are good for you. Maybe not the coffee bean but red,black,pinto beans and legumes are great if you're not allergic to them. They are a healthy carb (sweet potatoes and yams included. Good dietary fiber). Remember there's more than one way to "skin a cat" and at the end of the day, what you put in is what you get out. I can't tell if he is a total quack as all the experts below seem to indicate, but I like the thought provoking subject matter he so boringly spoke about. He's so calm and centered. Doesn't seem to be a full snake oil salesman or a scientist. This talk brings up some things i'd like to investigate though. I'd love to improve myself. At a minimum this talk should get us all thinking about the possibility and potential of improving everything about ourselves with seemingly easy adjustments and hacks. I do wish someone could just write bullet point instructions though... like complete steps1-10, and then just be awesome. I'll try being greatful and positive to start.

He missed the point of the scientific method somewhat (reproducibility, big data, double blindness, controls, etc) but it's great to see the general public have an interest in health, even if it stems from a mid life crisis. The "remedies" he suggeats are exactly what they sound like, a book launch, but health research has never been better so it's great he points people in that direction. The toxins bit is just funny, like the food babe.... Look up Cochrane collection for real data and information. It's peer reviewed and statistically significant. This is a sales pitch.

The thing that is not being taken into consideration is that we are all born with one of two different models of brain. There is this seven percent vs ninety three percent split between typical and atypical brains. A lot of this stuff works for the majority and not for the minority. After discovering which I was born with I can see my mental condition more clearly now.

Pretty sure my liver works without my body having to 'focus attention' on it. Not sure my body has that kind of innate self-awareness to be honest. This is a classic example where nuggets of truth are dispensed, backed up with facts, then nonsense is added in such a way to make people assume it follow naturally from the facts. For example, 'coffee beans contain small amounts of mould, and I can back that up with studies. Mould in coffee causes x, y, and z, so therefore...' The idea the mould in coffee is responsible for any kind of negative effect is pure theory, and a pretty rubbish theory at that. But its being presented as fact because he can back up the fact that mould exists.

I think the issue here is that he did all of this and continues to do so out of fear. Therefore, all he projects and pitches is this idea of avoiding his fear instead of taking it head on. It's a whole investment in avoidance. However, the interest lies in the truth that we can connect with our body and all aspects of our body fuel our mind and need to be tended to and treated correctly. If he loves himself and connects instead of hacks his body I think he would find more positive feedback.

tdark987 He takes Provigil, which is more like an anti-depressant than a classic stimulant. It's a "wakefulness promoting agent" which just means it turns your brains tired switch off. It doesn't make you jumpy or jittery. Doctors, lawyers, Wall Street ... they're all taking it.

Dear Dave Asprey, great for you about the amazing outcomes and truths you have attained. I did something similar but without so much money I had to use my fancy to understand how my body works. To be fair I should re-watch the video 'cause I did not understand if you promote coffee or not. And to be fair I think you should improve your comunicative skills. Sometime you seem unsure and fake. I hope this could help you. I don't want cast any doubt about your sincerity. Thank you.

For someone that has developed superior ways of focusing and processing information, his language doesn't reflect this: "People that are healthier DIE LESS OFTEN than those that are less healthy." I thought everyone only dies once.

he meant between a group of more healthy people and less healthy people, the group of healthy people loses its members to death less often than the other group.

This dude put butter in his coffee and turned it into an entrepreneurship? I'm in my 40's and started "bio-hacking" before it was even called that back in my teens through meditation, biofeedback, studying nutrition and exercise and you don't have to spend $300,000 to learn it. There are so many ways to easily learn meditation through CD's and books that it's ridiculous. With just that alone you can learn to get by on 5 hours of sleep a night and improve both your mental and physical performance. And as far as the diet goes, I've seen diet fads come and go, and while they might all contain a little bit of truth, it's everyone's individual responsibility to learn what diet works best for their genetics and lifestyle, and the best bet still seems to be: Proper nutrition+Healthy lifestyle=Healthy Person. Don't get me wrong, there's something about this guy that I like because he and I have a similar interest, but the idea that he's sharing some new great discovery or that it takes 40 years or a ton of money to learn what he's spouting is complete BS. Get a library card and learn to find QUALITY information (not advertisements disguised as information) on the internet, and everything this guy has learned or teaches can be yours for free.

Got skeptical when he was talking about exercise and how it wouldn't help much. He clearly doesn't know how to exercise because exercise is proven to make the brain functioning stronger as well as the body. 5 hours sleep would be shit and you feel groggy.

Well that system is heaven sent it helps when we need it. Reacting to things we wouldn't faster then we would if we didn't have it. I was not even really thinking I was a bit spaced out after a terrible I mean terrible encounter and a child was near me running a car was parked and a car flying up the road so I was told by her mommy. She was screaming I didn't even hear her, I grabbed the child and pulled her back extremely fast she said and asked me how I had no idea until she was behind me that I did and I still didn't let go noticed the red car about half a mile away. She was crying her mom, she hugged me and the car pretty much skimmed her it was that close. I saved her and why we need preservation. Very true story and I have a few more too.

I never get more than six hours and see way too much in my environment I say that because the things ppl do can be unpretty. I'm thankful I saved that child I believe she will be special in more than many ways. She was like sunshine and happy.

Disappointed. I looked up the infographic. a lot of things are true, like some of the foods being more or less healthy. But then his daily schedule of what to eat is wrong. Some of the foods are not listed in the right place and other things become questionable.

Dymon, he stopped needing it about 5 years ago, and has stated many times it was only a temporary solution for extreme fatigue brain fog severe fibromyalgia systematic arthritis from severe mold & heavy metal poisoning thyroid issues etc etc etc countless doctors couldn’t find the source of and he had to learn to cure himself. U obviously haven’t been thru it urself. He’s one of the absolute best sources available anywhere when it comes to teaching people how to heal.
