Believe it or not, the doss family actually asked Mel Gibson to tone it down on all the things Desmond actually did, they requested this out of fear that the audience would not believe all the things he did. However a great mini doc on Desmond’s service during world war 2 is on RU-vid titled “the medic who fought a war without a weapon” If you give it a watch, get back to me and let me know what you thought, because that guy did Sooooo much more than what is depicted in this movie. I'm not going to lie it was an incredible effort that got Desmond his Medal Of Honor. (the US's highest award for service people) But it must be said that EVERY time this medal is awarded the effort involved is superhuman and often cost's the recipient's life or involves being severely wounded. A former US Congressman was awarded one for jumping on a live grenade before it exploded to save his squad members when he was in the Army. He never walked again and it was a miracle he survived at all. Every single instance the Medal is awarded could be a film in itself. Since 1863 it's been awarded 3,512 times to 3,493 recipients. Shree you can even watch the efforts that caused one recipient (MSgt John Chapman) because it was filmed but a US drone as it happened. It's The First Medal of Honor Ever Recorded on RU-vid. If you watch it have a tissue handy.

@Shree Nation I believe the History Channel used to run such a show. When I was in the Army, it was explained that most MOH were awarded posthumously. Essentially, the condition to receive one is that the soldier must take action that they are certain is going to result in their own death. Each one is researched thoroughly and generally takes years before a board will decide on it.
@iangraham6887
@iangraham6887 Год назад
i agree and the same can be said about pretty much every victoria cross (british/commonwealth version of the MoH) ever awarded
@AcidAdventurer
@AcidAdventurer Год назад
I thoroughly disagree. Most medal of honor recipients do things that are on the cusp of what is possible through pure strength of human will. Almost none are so beyond that to even compare to what Desmond did. Desmond's story is a true miracle and is unfathomable otherwise, most moh stories don't require belief in the miraculous to make sense of the story.

Why would anyone need tissues for John Chapmans video heroic yes epic yes but no everyone will be brought to tears most probably wont. Just because someone doesn't cry doesn't mean anything or that they don't appreciate &/or aren't saddened /amazed by what he did or went through it just means they have more control over emotions. I've broken bones nearly died in a car accident after being hit by a drunk semi truck driver & not cried at the same time I've cried over seeing a puppy chained to a shattered dog house in a clearly abandoned house or just animals being abused let alone people so I'm not heartless & have emotions but generally it takes alot of me to even react call me what you want. the Drone footage isn't all that clear because of the weather clouds & it was at night early morning mostly & you can't really make things out even when it's highlighted & pointed out for you so its still heart breaking knowing what happened & what he went through let alone the desire & anger of why more wasn't doing but I don't see the need for tissues.

When someone has that Medal of Honor, every member of the military no matter rank will salute. The 📞 scene actually happened. The 📞 went up the chain of command and the military postponed their assault that Saturday morning until Doss finished praying. It wasn't a surprise like in the movie. It would have been the other way around. The general calling the unit asking if Doss was ready. As far as I know angels protected the military that Saturday because none of Doss's unit was hurt that Saturday morning. Doss was injured approximately 2 weeks later a couple miles from Hacksaw Ridge.

We do take the Ten Commandments very seriously, and to take them seriously means to follow them, not just when it’s convenient, but even when it could or even most definitely WILL cost our lives. That’s where Doss was coming from. Also, I went to an Adventist school, where my brother dated Doss’s niece (or was it possibly great niece.) Doss came and spoke, I remember, probably most likely for her graduation.

34:07 The first antibiotic had actually just been invented prior to the war. Penicillin shots, although not yet common in use, decreased mortality rates across all the war theaters. Even among amputees or even double amputees. Plus; there was the introduction of blood plasma. This allowed blood to be broken down and stored for easy use. Which further decreased the mortality rates wherever it was available. That's why so many of the wounded soldiers Desmond rescues are visible and alive in the hospital when Captain Glover goes to visit Hollywood.

As a former Combat Medic in the Army, its not surprising to see those who don't understand what a medic's job is in war. By the Geneva Convention (which the USA abides by) a medic carrires a weapon, be it rifle or pistol to protect the wounded and themselves. A medic does not carry grenades, antipersonnel mines or anything that could be used as an offensive weapon. Yes, a medic is a soldier first, but their job is to save lives in combat. Desmond Doss was a true hero not only to our country, but is held in the highest regard by all medics. If you haven't seen "Saving Priate Ryan" watch the first few minutes of the movie to see another example of what a medic does in combat.

Japanese soldiers had been doing suicidal "banzai" charges since the first battles years before Okinawa, so the US military was familiar with their tactics. But Okinawa was assumed by both sides to be the last holdout before invading the mainland, which was considered sacred in Japan, so the fierceness of the Japanese had become even more intense than before. The troops the Americans faced were commanded by fanatics with nothing to lose and nowhere to escape to.

Sharee great reaction. I come from long line of military in my family. My great grandfather, grandfather, my dad, his brother (all army - WWI, WWII, Korea, my mother's brother (Air Force - Vietnam POW). I followed in their footsteps, and I can say that it is because of the sacrifices of the people who served before me that I was honored just to serve for them. I will say with Hacksaw the real story is even more unbelievable and Hollywood thought people wouldn't believe it so they did remove some of it. For instance, Desmond's arm was actually broken part way through, and he splinted it himself to keep providing care. Men that were did attest that 75 was not the real count but over 100, but I think they only could confirm 75. What you get from these MoH is they border on miracles. For instance, one of your followers mentioned MSgt Chapman. I was in service and we all in the Air Force hear of his sacrifice. He was TSgt at the time but was posthumously awarded the rank of MSgt in addition to being awarded MoH. In the video you can hear narrated actually commenting at end he basically committed a second act that would have awarded him an additional MoH. So twice he performed acts that went above and beyond. Also note John was Combat Controller and part of special ops that are Pararescue (only 3 percent of Air Force qualify for this, and AF is smallest force to give you an idea of mental and physical conditioning) so in essence they are rescue missions, not full combat. Their motto is "So others may Live." If you want another good story watch the one on SrA Pitsenberger. He was also posthumously awarded MoH. Sebastain Stan (Bucky from Captain America) stars in it and it is good. The Last Full Measure. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9lEkHSscoDw.html

Doss’s autobiography was one of the first books I bought my Preteen daughter. Now married with kids, she still gives veterans a hug. Doss was a firm believer in the reality that there could only be one true God, and although the Bible prohibits murder, it also teaches that there is “a time to kill”. His misunderstanding of that doctrine Obviously takes nothing away from his unparalleled extraordinary heroism and bravery. He believed wholeheartedly in the true saying that “Only one life, it will soon be passed, only what’s done for Christ will last.”

As an Army veteran, I can state that the reason why a conscientious objector receives a hostile reaction from fellow soldiers within his unit is because their pacifist beliefs won't allow them to shoot an enemy soldier even if that enemy soldier's firearm is aimed at his fellow soldier (Meaning his fellow soldier can't count on the conscientious objector for protection) or himself.

A study done by the US military during world War two found that 80% of frontline soldiers never fired their weapons with the intent to kill. When it comes down to it, even under heavy attack people would shoot at the ground or up in the air. People would rather die with a clear conscience, than live without one. This was a common thing since at least the gun was invented. Generals found that their soldiers were great at shooting paper targets but when the target is a person, the only way for the general to get his men to point their guns at the enemy was to physically force the barrels of the guns down.

Miraculous? There was one incident that some Christians believe (possibly!) indicates Divine intervention: After the battle, a Japanese survivor (there were a few) testified that he recognized Doss in a picture, because he, the Japanese soldier, was a sniper on Hacksaw ridge, and at one point Doss came into his view. It should have been an easy kill, but when he tried to fire his rifle malfunctioned. Several times he cleared it, and tried again, and it malfunctioned every time. After Doss passed out of his view, his rifle worked perfectly, and examining it later, he found nothing wrong with it.

The great irony here is the actually number he save is recorded as 150 by the army but Doss being the humble guy he was said it couldn't be over 40. The army agreed on 75 realizing no one would believe the truth.

Technically speaking, combat medics (especially modern day medics) are capable of stacking and unstacking bodies, as The Fat Electrician says. Enemy takes a pot shot at a squad of grunts and they shoot back, that pot shot lands anywhere near doc, and shit gets increasingly violent in a very short amount of time. "Before you even realize you've made a fatal mistake, you are already being flanked. It is at times like these where you learn that the MRE spoon can be a deadly weapon"

Doss was sent to a hospital ship off the coast. The unit learned he had lost his Bible. The unit made it a point to find it. The unit went on some mission(s) to find it. I have no idea how dangerous these missions were. When Doss returned home the Bible was waiting for him.

If Doss was willing to be a medic even though he wouldn't carry a weapon, that's fine. He and others like him did do their jobs as medics and did it well. As for other movies, try "Danger Close" about the Australians in Vietnam. I don't think it has been reacted to, or not often. Or perhaps the original 1930 "All Quiet on the Western Front".

There were some dramatic liberties taken, like when and how he met his wife, and Hacksaw was not the first battle in which he participated, also, he saved more then 75 lives but he was being modest and wouldn't claim the full number so for his Medal of Honor they settled on saying 75.

What if he is alone with no one to help him? Not being a Christian, I can understand how you would ask that. However, as a Christian, Doss is never alone. His God - the Living God - is always with him. Just like the three men in the fiery furnace were protected by God, Doss' God will defend him. Doss put his life on the line to remain faithful to his God, and God protected the life of His faithful. There is too much to tell here, but Doss was miraculously protected on more than one occasion.

I like your reactions in general, but I was especially touched that this movie, which holds a special place in my heart, was the only war movie that even brought tears of joy to your eyes :) Is a certain irony that of all people the Catholic Mel Gibson (my personal favorite of all filmmakers) made this movie about an Adventist and thus contributed to his increasing fame, but it also shows how all these disputes between denominations lose meaning when special people with unwavering faith and superhuman accomplishments show all of us what really matters regardless of differences.

Only someone unaware of the differences and why they are important would think such a thing is ironic or that it shows the differences to be trivial or unimportant or that they "lose meaning" Doss' story only highlights the differences and how they dictate how Romanists and Protestants would distinctly view Doss' story. Rome would view it as a story about Doss' own merit and strength and see it as a story about how Doss accomplished so much, whereas Doss himself and any other Protestant would see it as an example of God's accomplishments alone.
@AcidAdventurer
@AcidAdventurer Год назад
It is also the case that Pacifism and nonviolence are almost nonexistent in the Romanist tradition, but are very prominent in Protestantism, particularly in the anabaptist subcategory. And this is again because of grand differences in doctrine. Rome views itself as the keeper of true Christianity and it believes even violence is good and just in the act of doing so (which they very often have brutally executed throughout history), whereas Protestants view God as the keeper and man as only an instrument even unto nonviolent self sacrifice (which was very common in the early anabaptist movement)
@AcidAdventurer
@AcidAdventurer Год назад
The Protestant Reformation, much like the early church, was born out of nonviolent martyrdom in its earliest stages with Rome being the one making the martyrs

I object to you saying, you can't take a stethoscope to a gun fight. I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman (Medic) in Vietnam (3 Tours). I had 4months of basic medical training and two months of combat medical training when I was assigned to the Marines. The army medical training is similar. According to the Geneva Conventions medics are not to carry offensive weapons. I never carried a weapon. During times not in combat the medic is supposed give first aid lessons to his whole platoon frequently. So, anyone can take over basic first aid if the medic is killed. They can carry a pistol for their own protection and the protection of the one they are working on. Those two medics in the same fox hole should never be close to each other during combat (That’s one of the first things you learn). One of my tours in Vietnam I was on a ship on the Saigon River in the Mekong Delta. Me and another corpsman were the only medical personnel on board. Being the only medical person onboard I did everything medical. If you were on a ship or with the Marines, you were called Doc. We were taught that during combat conditions we were to be on opposite ends of the ship. The 2 corpsmen we replaced were together during a fire fight and they both got killed. You never remember all the ones that you have treated but you never forget the ones you can’t save.

2:12 "Walking into _war_ movies, I'm... almost always prepared for death, but... I'm always taken aback by the... _scale_ of deaths. You known?" Oh, yeah. In war, people don't just _die._ They die _graphically_ and _gradually._ They _hurt._ They die in ways that dispel the _romance_ of war. Being prepared for war is about much more than being prepared to see _death._ You have to be prepared to see graphic _injury_ on people who _might_ die, and then again, might _not_ which can test your mettle a lot _more._ This is why military veterans generally _don't_ care to talk about what we've been through, even those of us who haven't seen combat. You take the romance away from war, it's _not_ something people like to talk about.

I also suggest you watch the old black and white movie about the first Conscientious Objector, who was awarded a Medal of Honor, called Sargent York, based on the life of Alvin York. 13:04 "Sir?" _"I am not 'Sir!' I am Sergeant Howell or Sarge. 'Sir' you say for useless people!"_ "Okay, sir." 🤔 Shree... are you being ironic? See, in the US Armed Forces, "sir" and "ma'am" are the titles used to refer to commissioned _officers;_ people who've gone to _college_ and gotten at least a _bachelor's_ degree, and then gone the _officer_ route. They tend to have ranks like "lieutenant," "captain," "colonel," and such. Accordingly, they wield a _lot_ more authority and make a _lot_ more money. But Sergeant Howell is _enlisted._ Enlisted soldiers tend to have ranks like "private," "corporal," "sergeant" and such. It's pretty much a cardinal _sin_ to refer to one of _these_ people as "sir" or "ma'am," though, admittedly, not for the reason Sergeant Howell _presented._ He was being tongue-in-cheek, there. No, usually, the enlisted personnel with _authority_ are the sergeants. You want to get _their_ attention, don't say "Sir," or "Ma'am." Say "Sergeant." Address them by their _rank._ Officers often get teased about being useless, because in any gathering of military personnel, they're the ones most likely to be standing around looking things over while everyone else is actually _doing_ things.

The Pacific Theater was much more intense for the Americans who went there than those who went to the European Theater. The imperial Japanese were indoctrined to believe that surrender was the ultimate form of dishonor, and would bring shame upon their families if they showed any signs of weakness. This indoctrination was the prime reason the American PoWs had an extremely high mortality rate versus those where captured by the Germans. The Japanese treated those they captured absolutely brutally, only 20% of American prisoners were expected to survive. The Germans, as bad as they were, still honored the Geneva rules whereas Japan wasn't apart of it. The Pacific theater was all about island hopping to gain footholds to get closer to Japan, and the closer we got; the more brutal they fought. Hacksaw Ridge is in Okinawa, the last island we captured and was considered Japanese soil as it was a provenance of Japan. If we had invaded Japan, it would have came at the cost of millions of lives, and the invasion force would have absolutely dwarfed the D-Day Invasion. It's crazy to think about.

Fyi, my favorite war movie is, by far, Apocalypse Now!, but I would not recommend doing a first watch reaction. That would do you an injustice, imo. That film is so deep with meanings and subtext that it's far more of an experience than simply a movie. There are so many different threads to grasp at, that it needs your whole attention to stay present in the film. I wouldn't want to deny you that feeling as the movie is designed that way. That said, I would love to share your experience of that film, and I would definitely like to see a rewatch, after you've processed it once. But being immersed in the film is important for the storytelling, first time around. If you can see it in a theater or in surround sound, that's even better. Most critics put Apocalypse Now! in their all-time top ten. It's worth seeing it right.

I thought of two more military movies. The imitation game. Another movie about a man everyone should know. This time a mathematician Alan Turing played by Benedict Cumberbatch. That one is a movie about people who were not in combat which might be an interesting change if you are looking for one with less violence on the screen. The second one Men of Honor is more about individual accomplishment of a black man named Carl Brasher against racism. Tha one has Cuba Gooding Jr, Robert Dinero, and Charlize Theron in it. I don't remember combat in that one, but both of these films are very good. (Edit: I realized it is Men of Honor not Man of Honor that is a different movie I haven't seen )
