HACKSAW RIDGE (2016) is SO INSPIRING! | First Time Watching | (reaction/commentary/review) 

"Fun" fact: Ralph (the soldier who has both legs blown off early in the first battle scene, that the other medic tells Doss not to bother with) is Australian army veteran Damien Thomlinson, who actually lost both legs in an IED attack in Afghanistan in 2009. He wasn't just acting. He knew what it was like, and required a mental health advisor on set to make sure he could handle the performance.

They underplayed his heroics in this movie to make it more believable.

Andrew Garfield really deserved an Oscar for this one. Shame he didnt win

In some significant ways, this excellent true story of Desmond Doss was toned down to make it more believable. However, there are some things that were changed that you might want to know about. Doss and his unit had actually taken part in two previous Pacific island invasions before they got to Okinawa, and Doss had actually been decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor in both, so Desmond was already a well respected member of the unit before Hacksaw Ridge. You can understand why they decided to compress the story entirely to the Okinawa campaign to keep the story easier to understand. Some of the other changes they made are also understandable, such as they amped up the drama of the trial a lot, and the situation where he leaves his wife at the altar while he sits in a cell is not quite the way that happened.

At the time of hacksaw ridge Desmond Doss had tuberculosis to which he later lost a lung, he was also a strict vegetarian but due to food available was surviving on crackers and water. While on the ridge he had to stiffle his coughing while saving his comrades so not to give off their location. It took nearly 9hours to find his bible and his brothers in arms would not rest till they found it with many of the battalions joining in the search because of what he did for them. The things he did were nothing short of a miracle but there is so much much more that was left out as they thought if it was put in nobody would believe any of it. If is one autobiography to read i would recommend his as its truly inspiring and so mind blowing what he accomplished .

Rare you see a man that stays firm upon his religious conviction under pressure. It is one who lives buy his firm conviction. I’m of the same faith and I’ve been humiliated for it. Staying firm under such similar pressure as been one of my greatest moments in life. Mine was not one of risking my life. But that of loosing my Job. As for Desmond, God saw me through it. Of course my was not a life threatening situation. Love this movie

I knew you would love this. Yes it's technically a war movie but, to me, it's more of a love story, and one of believing in yourself, no matter the obstacles before you. Desmond was the true definition of a hero! May he RIP. 😇

In truth this movie like many others based on true events. Suffers from time compression. Okinawa was Doss's 3rd beach landing. The men in his company already knew how brave this man was. The director Mel Gibson actually left out a lot of Doss's actions. Including after being wounded by the grenade. His litter (stretcher) crew fell under heavy fire while carrying Doss back. They were forced to take cover. Upon being under cover Doss saw a wounded soldier and rolled off the litter drug himself to the wounded soldier and started giving him treatment. Doss would refuse to go back until the other soldier was transparent first. Doss's captain who put him in for the CMH estimated that that night on Hacksaw Doss lowered over 100 wounded men to safety. When the Army asked Doss. Doss in his typical humbleness estimated he may have helped 50 men. So the Army split the difference giving a credit of 75 men. Doss's religion made him a vegetarian. At this time the majority of calories in the food came from meat and potatoes. So Doss lived on potatoes, and what vegetables and fruits he could scrounge up . Often living on coconuts for energy.

The movie doesn't tell you how high a price Desmond paid. He never regained full use of his arm, and worse, he picked up TB which resulted in him losing a lung and some of his ribs, and in addition rendered him deaf, which is why he sounds as if he suffered a stroke. Desmond gave his all for his country, and more importantly, his God.

This movie shows how the human spirit can be so redeeming through the acts of just one person. How the decision to keep to your convictions can not only be the best thing you can do for yourself, but ultimately for others as well. Great work by Andrew G., and Mel showed that he does have directorial magic still in him. Great movie.

One of the scenes that didn't follow reality was the lost bible. Hacksaw Ridge had been taken and Doss's troops had been relieved. They could have left but they scoured the ridge looking for his bible. It was presented to him at the Medal of Honor ceremony by Capt. Glover. They risked injury by unexploded ordinance for Desmond, for his bible.

It's hard to decide which was more heroic - saving 75 men during the course of that slaughter or standing by his principles when almost literally his entire regiment and even the force of the entire Army was against him. One of my favorite lines in Captain America: Civil War was: “Compromise where you can. Where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye, and say 'No, you move'.” On the other hand, the comment made by Desmond's future wife when she questioned whether his resolve was following the will of God or his own will was on the money as well - it's always a fine line between conviction and pure stubbornness.

I'm so glad Mel Gibson did this before Desmond passed away. His story needed to be told and Mel Gibson did a beautiful job telling it.

Also, the sniper you see in this actually lived in real life and later said his gun kept jamming every time he tried to shoot Desmond. He was definitely protected by God! It was said that Desmond had a very calming affect on people. He’d talk to them like it was just another day and they were sitting at home. They said he gave people a huge sense of peace and calm. So beautiful! The Lord used him in a mighty way! If I could be used like this by just a fraction, I’d have lived my life well. Ps. Definitely watch "Band of Brothers" if you haven't already!

That number of 75 soldiers saved was a conservative guest-ament. Between that and a previous battle, he was said to have saved over 150 soldiers.

This is my favorite war movie. I was so inspired I actually visited his grave site. Glad you watched it!

If maybe pretty please by any chance I could suggest a movie.."Tick, Tick, Boom" starring Andrew Garfield is such a remarkable movie! I did not know he was capable of that type of acting! This however was a fantastic watch, and I am so glad I was able to watch this movie with you for the first time! I can not wait to see what is up next!

This movie isn't all there is to the story. And the 75 men he saved is not necessarily the correct number saved. When he was asked (humble as ever) he said a lower number but the men he served with estimated it was closer to 100. So the official number is somewhere in between.

I'm married a Brit in Sep and was surprised how few Christians there are in the UK. Then again, there are more Christians in China than the US. BTW, I commanded the largest US ground radar site in Japan and have visited Hacksaw Ridge.

There was a bloke by the name of Ernest corey a stretcher bearer in ww1 from cooma in nsw. He was awarded the military medal for bravery 4 times the only person to be awarded it that many times in history. He was awarded the medals for continued stretcher bearer work in ww1 over extended periods of time not unusual to be under fire for 4 continuous days at a time or longer without sleep retrieving wounded men like desmond did some amazing things.

Another GREAT movie is Jojo Rabbit, or Only The Brave with Josh Brolin, or another war movie that is always overlooked is 12 Strong. Keep up the good reactions.

The ending, despite all the triumphant music, is just another bloody battle scene. I've never felt particularly victorious watching it, just sad that more people are dying in order to "win"

The will alone is insufficient to explain this. Miracles like this are a colloborative effort and cannot happen without divine assistance. A better discriptor then is simply to say that God raised Desmond up to demonstrate to the world, the Power of Faith, the power of believing so strongly that in spite of all the obstacles being thrown in your path to stop you, you persist in doing things God's way as opposed to the world's way. A lesson for everyone in every challenge of life.

Hacksaw Ridge is arguably the greatest WW2 movie ever made. This movie isnt fictional propaganda like Saving Private Ryan. Hacksaw is about a real person doing extraordinary things. Desmond Doss was the ultimate Christian soldier. Sure, Christ advocated for capital punishment for certain sinners, especially those people who were trying to corrupt little ones. He is still the ultimate role model. But Desmond also set quite an example. I cant believe weve never seen a movie about Desmond Doss until now. Andrew Garfield's Desmond Doss is everything that his Peter Parker should've been. This is still Garfield's best performance. He is absolutely fearless... as a Christian soldier should be. "Fear no evil." I love how we see the real Desmond Doss reflect on helping the soldier see again.

The Japanese were speaking in a WW2 special about the battle of Hacksaw Ridge. They said they saw a man at the edge putting soldiers over the side and every time they had a clear shot their gun jammed. Amazing!!!

You should look it up - only the court room seen was made for the movie because it was easier to show the justification for Desmond's CO. Everything else was real and "legit". In fact - the real story is even crazier and bolder! Desmond Doss is a LEGEND!

The greatest weapon is faith. Give men faith and they will work or fight 5 times harder. “Faith can move mountains” figuratively and literally. Motivation and hope. The fuel to the engine.

Banzai charges were terrifying, but not usually very effective. The charging Japanese usually lost ten to twenty times as many soldiers as enemies they killed during a banzai charge.

I have faith myself even if I am terrible at following it. I have athiest friends, agnostic friends and friends from other religions. All of us have doubts but when you hear about someone like Desmond, you might ask yourself.... "well, maybe?"

Great film. The weird thing is that they had certain occupations set aside for conscientious objectors. Including medics if I am not mistaken. It appears Doss was scammed into joining the military as a "regular" which was a big mistake. As a regular soldier, of course he was expected to quality with a rifle and such. Still a huge hero. One man in a million.

I see you’ve been on a war movie kick lately. There’s a movie from 2019 called Danger Close:The Battle of Long Tan about the Australian army in the Vietnam War. Based on actual events and is a very good movie and not talked about as much as it should be.

He saved at least one hundred men according to his commanding officer, but he said he only save fifty. They agreed on seventy-five as a compromise.

Whether one is a believer or not, at least such events give one an idea there must be so much more between heaven and earth than we are able to grasp with our limited imagination, because what Desmond did was not "normal", rather superhuman and hardly rationally explainable. Btw, there were two other men besides Desmond Doss who refused to touch a gun for reasons of faith and still served their country (Thomas William Bennett and Joseph Guy LaPointe Jr.), who knows how many more special people there are in view of such achievements that we have not heard of.

Japanese definitely liked to target corpsmen and medics but on the Western European front Germans generally didn’t do that. There was still a kind of gentlemanly restraint (if such a thing can be said about modern war) in Western Europe that simply was not present at all in the total barbarism that was the Pacific war

Not having a rifle was kind of an advantage in a way. It forced him to evade rather than engage and he had both his hands free at all times.

The bible scene isn't true. He didn't get his bible back right away. After they took Hacksaw, the men went on a man hunt just to retrieve his bible and mail it to him. He ended up serving for two more weeks before being wounded by shrapnel from a grenade. Despite his injuries, he continued to treat other soldiers until his arm was broken by Japanese fire. His heroism as a medic were done but not before insisting that his litter-bearers take another man first before rescuing him. Wounded, in pain, and losing blood, he still put others ahead of his own safety. He would choose to die so another could live. He also waited for 5 hours before recieving help. Desmond developed tuberculosis. He would spend most of the next six years in hospitals. Cold, wet, sleepless nights, shivering in a muddy foxhole on the islands of the Pacific, As the illness progressed his left lung had to be surgically removed along with five ribs. For the rest of his life, he survived on a single lung, until it too failed.

You should watch Sweet home Alabama and where the heart is. They are both great movies where the heart is the girl is from Tennessee which is where im from its always been one of my favorites like i will watch it anytime I can. And sweet home Alabama has reese Witherspoon and Patrick Dempsey

75 is the official number of lives the Army says Doss saved, in reality, he sent more than 75 men down and the army couldn't keep a close enough record. the numbers go past 100 men that Doss sent down the ridge.

He didn't "use" Smitty's body for anything, he just wasn't going to leave him there.

Go watch "Sgt York" starring Gary Cooper. True story about a conscientious objector who changed his mind and won the medal of honor. No RU-vidr has ever reviewed that movie.

People watch things and think its so not believable like so much that look crazy and hard and impossible like if people would just think first like imagine it and realize a lot of it is possible. Many people judge based of looks like thinking only bog bulky ones are strong when many are easily taken out by shorter or thiner people like it depends on the person not like dont judge one based on looks or where they from or whatever.
