Vanessa Williams is one of the GREATEST comeback stories of all time! She was the FIRST black Miss America winner (which caused controversy at the time) who had to step down due to nude photos taken when she was younger. She was publicly shamed and lost her title. A few years later she re-emerged as an incredible singer and then a celebrated actress. Vanessa Williams stands today as an ICON who shows that perseverance and talent will see you through the storm.

I don't remember the photos being nude, but she may have been or at least scantily dressed but the truly provocative part of the photo shoot was the sexual positioning of the two female subjects. I actually think it was a great publicity opportunity and would not be surprised if it was strategically planned. It was exposed in like the last month or two of her reign as Miss. America. While I would have preferred that she did not do that, she did not diminish herself in my point of view at all, everyone has used sexuality to escalate and promote themselves but had a problem with it because she was black, that is my opinion.

I was around when she was crowned Miss America, and I don't recall it actually being controversial at all. I remember the constant drumbeat from people who *claimed* it was controversial because they were just *sure* that Middle America was aghast. But living in Middle America, I maybe only heard one person (an old woman) express any dismay over it, and her comment was met with eyerolls.
@matthewvade6553
@matthewvade6553 2 года назад
@@kokostevens1071 Actually the photos weren't only nude, they were somewhat graphic (very graphic for the time) lesbian sex scenes. I was only a kid at the time, but I remember the "scandal" they caused, and that it was the best selling issue of Penthouse magazine ever, because everyone thought it would be a collector's item someday. Only, as pointed out below, that issue became even more well known when the centerfold became perhaps the most famous porn actress on the planet, and even more so when they found out her entire career was done with a fake ID, and she was only 16 when she was in that Penthouse issue. So every issue of that "collectible" became child porn that could send the owner to jail.

I saw her perform at the Miss California pageant when my best friend competed. She performed in crown and gown. I met her afterward backstage and she was very nice and beautiful. It was awful that they took her title just before her year as Miss American ended. Silly, really, as she is one of the most successful Miss America's after her reign along with Gretchen Carlson, Lee Meriweather and Mary Ann Mobley.

Wonderful 90s ballad (1992). This was her first (and only) #1 Billboard Hot 100 song, but it was by no means her only big hit. You should also check out "Dreamin'", "Running Back to You", "Love Is" (with Brian McKnight), "The Sweetest Days", and "Colors of the Wind" (from the movie "Pocahontas"). If you want to see one of her movies, she actually did a really cool action film called "Eraser" with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I think you'd love that film.

Omgosh she is so multi-talented, it's unbelievable! I had the privilege of meeting her shortly after graduating high school. She had been invited to the church my family and I was attending at the time! (I was barely 17 years old at the time, and just remember being so emotional when she'd won Miss America, so you can imagine when that scandal broke, it hit like a ton of bricks!) Needless to say, It was an out-of-body experience meeting her, she was just so breathtakingly beautiful! What this scandal set out to do, did not succeed! She rose above it all, and became a superstar! Pure class! I love all her music, and her voice is so underrated IMO. I think u guys would also love her hip/hop side as well, with "He's Got The Look"! It's funky and upbeat, and she can dance! It's such a fun video to watch! 🥰

Vanessa was in the TV show "Ugly Betty". I knew her first as Miss America, then a singer. Her first record came out around 1987 or 88. I have some of her albums. I think she first started acting in Broadway plays, and then was in TV/movies. If you've seen "Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air", she was a guest star on one episode. I heard y'all use the words "perfect combination" in your reaction. That's the name of a song by Stacy Lattisaw (duet with Johnny Gill). She was a singer in the late 1970s to the late 1980s. I think she was around 11 when her first album came out, but she later left secular music. She has a RU-vid channel now and sometimes posts videos (usually church related). Some of her most well known songs are "Dynamite", "Love On A Two Way Street", "Attack Of The Name Game", & "Let Me Be Your Angel". Stacy is also one of the singers in the MLK Jr. tribute song "King Holiday". Stacy discovered Johnny Gill, who started out as a solo singer, but later joined New Edition after Bobby Brown left.

Vanessa Williams is a class act. I had the good fortune of hanging out with her and her family when she was making her first record. After the whole Miss America blowout she really focused on making music and transforming her life. Once she made it I saw her briefly at a Grammy party and she stopped her whole entourage to chit chat with me for a minute till the PR lady gave me stink eye. My favorite Vanessa story was about the time we were drinking champaign in the hot tub on sultry LA night. Of course I omit the part where our kids were running around the pool, jumping in and splashing water everywhere. Fun times. Save the best for last brought back the memories. Thanks for Female Friday's.

Vanessa Williams has an interesting story to explore. She overcame a lot to become a worldwide star. She was the first black Miss America, but was dethroned because they found out that she had formerly posed nude for a photo shoot with another woman. She was really dragged through the mud for that at the time. People were relentlessly judgemental towards her about it. So glad you guys have discovered Vanessa! She's gorgeous and has such a fantastic voice. Her other big ballads are "Dreamin'," "Love Is," and "Colors of the Wind." For upbeat dance songs, I'd suggest "Running Back to You" and especially "Work to Do" for female Friday.

Vanessa Williams is a singer, actress, and fashion designer. She's known as the first African-American woman to receive the Miss America title when she was crowned Miss America 1984 but resigned her title in 1984 amid a media controversy about her nude photographs being published in Penthouse magazine. She then had a successful career as a singer and actor, receiving multiple Grammy and Tony award nominations as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She received a public apology from the Miss America CEO during the 2016 pageant for the events of 1984. She has a beautiful voice and many fantastic songs and yes she has been in a number of makeup commercials. You should do her Disney Pocahontas song "COLORS OF THE WIND".

Great actress & singer, if you all remember the TV show “Ugly Betty”, she played the “Anna Wintour-esque” crabby boss of a fashion magazine that Betty worked for, she also was on “Desperate Housewives” & she’s been in a ton of other shows & Broadway, before that she had her music career & being in the pagaent. It took decades for the pagaent admins to apologize to her for stripping her of her crown, but shes come out on top in terms of success of any winner

OMG! The former Miss America?! I can’t believe my man didn’t know who she was! I can understand not knowing that she was a singer but not as the first black Ms. America?! Lol! No hard feelings though. I’ll tell you this much, in her day every man wanted that woman! Every man not only want to meet her, they wanted to marry that woman! Across all color lines! Oh yes! Vanessa Williams and her signature song! That along with “the right stuff.“ Every time I hear this song I think of the wedding episode from the NBC show a different world because the episode title was named “save the best for last.“ It’s all good because you know now! Have a nice day!😅

It's fun watching your studio change. I remember when you switched from the brick to the bare walls. Now seeing all the walls get filled has been so satisfying. Love the show guys. Keep it up.

My mom, twin sister and I fell in love with watching Miss America in 1984. She was our pick. Fell in love again when this song came out. Met my husband in 98. He is a huge Lakers fan. Vanessa was married to retired Laker, Rick Fox then. She will be immortalized in Disney history for doing the main song release for Pocahontas, which is beautiful. Acting is icing on the cake. 💖

I love this song definitely on my favorite's list. I remember when she won Miss America. She blew everyone out of the water during the talent competition. That was the first time I heard her sing. The acting came later. She is one talented lady. She has been several movies and television shows.

She sings beautifully. Additionally, the orchestration of the music by super producer David Foster was the foundation. I'd like to hear more from both of them. There is a lot out there by them

I had forgotten that Vanessa Williams was a singer, but the second the music started I recognized the song. I liked that song very much and I always thought that Vanessa Williams was one of the most beautiful women in America. Perhaps these are all reasons she won Miss America. 😁😁👍👍

"Still In Love" by Brian McKnight is another amazing one with slow ballad, beautiful voice, orchestra. Also, Vanessa and Brian did a duet called "Love Is" which is pretty amazing. Again, another slow ballad, as these two seemed to specialize in these love ballad-type songs. Lyrics for "Still In Love:" When the eagles forget how to fly, and it's twenty below in July, when violets turn red and roses turn blue, I'll be still in love with you. Yea, sappy, but he does it really right. ;)
