@@jondoe7036 guess what, you're exactly right, the composer Darren Korb voiced both of them, as well as orpheus singing, always brings a funny feeling when you hear orpheus singing and you talk to skelly
My personal headcanon is that Theseus isn’t allowed to realize that Zagreus is Persephone’s son because then they’d have to confront the fact that he tried to get it with his mom once, and then Zagreus would simply beat him to a pulp every time he went through Elysium.
Not him, his friend Pirithous. Theseus kidnapped Helen. When she was twelve. With the plan of waiting for her to grow a bit. Would be nice to come across Pirithous. He's probably still on that chair.
@@ahmedamine24 several theories: He’s either hade’s throne (which you can replace), or is the chair that orpheus sits on OR Got killed when Cerberus tore up the lounge
Well, the 1. Marrying her little sister, and then f*cking up with a god later on so that the little sister ends up committing suic*de 2. Kidnapping Helen of Troy 3. Trying to help his friend kidnap Persephone certainly doesn't help
@@bucca2 I’m down for this Theseus-hate. He’s the worst. Don’t forget to mention: -That time he caused his son to die (Rip Hippolytus) -That time he caused his dad to die (Rip Aegeus) -That time Medea tried to murder him (I like to think she specifically wanted to kill him because he sucked, but that’s not it. Still, a woman can dream) I also really like the idea that Theseus got pushed off a cliff and died.
Not quite. As far as the game shows, this isn't something like his pride getting hurt. The game implies quite heavily that Than's been mentally scarred by the incident, and who wouldn't? Mortal or not, being chained and locked into a small dark space for who knows how long will affect you. And people in the game are genuinely pissed when you try to lighten Sisyphus' sentence
@@kaylenvee8150 Really what Sisyphus did wasn't really any pettier or crueler than anything the Cthonic & (especially) Olympian gods do on the regular to mortals. Everyone in Greek mythology is a rotten bag. The only reason Ares bothered to rescue Thanatos was because war was boring to him without death. The scales of justice are very unbalanced in the mythos of Greece, mortals are punished far less (or even rewarded) for doing far worse to one another while sundered for eternity for the faintest slight to the gods, and the gods and toy with the lives and souls of mortals for their own entertainment with naught for recompense.
@@kaylenvee8150 Not only that, because we don't have a clear timeline on when the incident happened, there's a part of me that imagined Thanatos being only a child when he was trapped.
@@kaylenvee8150 ehehehehe, you sure are taking this serious but gotta say, Death sure is a gullible little twerp throughout mythology, I mean, getting locked into basements while drunk, getting swindled while playing cards, getting trapped on Apple Trees, being persuaded into crawling into some blacksmiths coal-bag and then smashed on the anvil... If Apollon can be a rat bag and skin some flute player because he was jealous of his talent then If I were in Sisyphus´s shoes in the Hades Universe, I would probably not only shove Thanatos into a box, I would also fill it with liquor, set it on fire and toss it in the ocean while burning just to make a point
Ares and Athena not being on good terms? Well... Considering their roles, it makes sense: - Ares is the God of war, more specifically the BRUTAL side of it. Bloodshed, violence and all that. All Power. All offense. - Athena, meanwhile... is more representative of the defensive side of war as the Goddess of Wisdom. Leadership, strategy, proper defence, basically ending battles with minimal bloodshed. And naturally, it's no surprise as to why they don't agree with each other! Damn, Supergiant know their mythology really well. That's a game for me to buy soon.
Athena was also far more venerated and beloved by the Greeks, who did not hold Ares in very high esteem due to the violet, discordant nature he represented. His Roman counterpart Mars was held in far more positive regard.
@@GoddessUmbra i thought hephaestus was the least favorite child but i guess theyre both in the same low tier. thats seemingly one of the interpretations for Zeus to go about "hurling his thunderbolt" if you know what i mean around every other woman and sometimes other goddesses in greece, he ultimately is so dissapointed with the children Hera gave him he wants actually good ones. in turn he usually ends up helping them or convincing the other gods to help them a lot. its also funny to think that, Athena is tecnically Zeus first child with his first wife that he literally absorbed inside himself to try and circunvent gaias prophecy that his progenitor would dethrone him, which some other exagerated interpretations try to tie dionysius as the other child he was supposed to have with this first wife (sorry forgot her name) because zeus kinda nurtured him inside his own body because of a little oopsie regarding his original human mother which is a bit of a long story.
I was laughing my ass out of how passionate and breathtaken sounded the statue commentaries xD The voice actor of Zagreus is a god of voiceacting, jeez.
I really need to find out if in SuperGiants version of the Greek Myths the following: What made Theseus abandon Ariand? In some versions its due to Divine Intervention usually Athena telling him something... but in most is due to him being an Asshole (ya know the guy who kidnap a young child Helen of Troy to marry later when she gets older). Im curious if he somehow found out she was using him, because she helped imediatly when she saw him, and most say its due to love but she has such a fucked up family i wouldnt be suprised she wanted to escape imediatly. So either he found out and abandon her or the gods told him. Either way hes still a Douche.
The versions where it’s divine intervention mostly come from Athens, aka Theseus’ home. Makes sense they would rewrite their main heroes’ story to make him seem less douchey. Happens all the time in Greek mythology. Whenever there’s multiple versions of a myth some of them tend to have some cultural bias to them. It’s very fascinating.
I'm a little disappointed they didn't use my favorite version of the Sisyphus myth. He dies once, but in the underworld he captures thanatos and chains him up, so nobody can die. While the gods sort out thanatos being in chains, sisyphus is able to escape the underworld. Sisyphus then dies again, but has his wife not perform the proper burial rites. Sisyphus convinces hades to let him go aboveground to tell her what to do with the promise that he'll come right back. A promise he immediately breaks. Hades wants to send thanatos to go kill sisyphus, but Thanatos is scared of sisyphus after what happened last time, so sisyphus gets to live a long life.
I'd heard that Sisyphus tricked Persephone about the missed burial rites thing, and Persephone was hella pissed when she learned that he'd lied to her.
i heard he tricked thanatos and chained him using the soul binding chains that Hades gave to him (and kinda later became his own personal tool) while he was still alive, as the gods themselves comissioned Hades to kill/punish him for being overall a very dickish king and violating several laws of hospitality (he invited people to his castle only to kill and steal their goods) later the other gods themselves i remember Ares and someone else intervened because they were pissed people were unable to die. one wonders why they didnt smite him themselves and made Hades do the dirty work this time, maybe they tried including him in their god business or something for a change and Hades might have been bored and not too much of a sore-ass that day (probably because on this legend persephone was with him so he was more meekly maybe)
Still love Sisyphus in this game. He's all friendly, but then hits with the "I never was terribly fearful of you gods" and you realise that even though he helps you out and is very polite that he really is no pushover. Especially since he trapped the god of death by essentially being the bugs bunny of the era (he tricked Thanatos into putting on manacles and then locked him in a closet).
So Aphrodite is cheating on Hephaestos with Ares and Ares is now going out with Nyx truly some of the shittiest members of the pantheon Though there's hera: kills, curses or enslaves a good deal of the women zeus elopes with (or forces himself onto) as well as their heirs zeus: womanizer who can't take responsibility for his triggered wife + r-ped his sister (and more) hephaestos: tried to r-pe athena athena: made medusa so ugly she kills people because she and poseidon boinked in her temple, then had a hero go out and kill her and then mounted her head on her shield, plus she turned Arachne into the first spider because athena wasn't as good at weaving so that's some fierce competition
@@KleptomaniacJames Allow a Greek to know kinda better, even if there are accounts saying that Athena was not better, she knew for sure how to weave. Arachne maybe was better though.
@@KleptomaniacJames If you consider this abuse of power, you forget poor Teresia and she did what she did by accident. Keep in mind that himbris was actually a sin in ancient greece so theorically, Athena's action of turning Aracne to a spider was covered. Yet again she blinded Teresia by panic and in ancient greek when a god punishes someone, the punish cannot be lifted (that's why Prometheus had to carry a ring with the stone he was tied after Hercules released him) As for the dna comment. Not, it doesn't but it happens for me to study the myths of my country. So yeah I probably have the actual sources in my shcool and staff? Regardless, fighting over how shitty the greek gods were is pointless, they were shit either way.
well at least nyx clearly has ares in the friendzone, and apparently ares did want to learn stuff from her... nyx mentioned athena as well, who said she was interested in Nyx like Ares
Kind of ironic that after Theseus abandons Ariadne on the island of Naxos she winds up falling in love with and marrying Dionysus, having one of the most stable and loving relationships of all the gods while Theseus' love life goes to complete shit.
@@therainbowwillow4453 From what I've seen in the original version of the myth Theseus wasn't coerced by the gods, it was just a massive dick move. The part where the other gods told him to do it was a later addition to the story (Probably added by Athens to make him seem like he wasn't a massive dick since he was their founding hero).
@@Brainflayer that entire idea makes it at least twice as funny. Athens realizes Theseus is a massive piece of shit who (apparently in some versions) got pushed off a cliff in a civilian revolt, falling to his death just like his old man, who he totally kinda accidentally killed by being stupid, but still someone thinks, “you know? Theseus doesn’t make athens look very good” and rewrites his myths. Theseus is dumb. He did like three good things in his entire life and he was a shithole the rest of the time.
@@therainbowwillow4453 Theseus is that childhood celebrity that played one massive role in a Disney channel hit movie, got super fucking famous, and then spent the rest of his "career" taking roles in shitty films and snorting coke off the ass crack of prostitutes in Denny's parking lots to feel alive.
Theseus just doesn't wanna admit that Zagreus wouldn't be able to find Ariadne even if he tried...since she's on Olympus with a much better boytoy than he ever could be: Dionysus (ironically in one of the most stable and nondramatic relationships there)!
@@BoostedMonkey05 i think Hades went for the little headcanon of some few versions were theseus pitied the minotaur for what he was and whats been done to him after he understood the whole situation. or perhaps he came to realize asterios was kinda of a victim of his own births circunstances after they were both dead in the underworld, and used his influences with the other gods to let him stay in elysium instead of erebos, the deepest pits of the underworld.
A small detail about Zagreus' character that I really love is how polite he is, despite of how easygoing he can be at times, he always call people sir and stuff like that. In contrast with most olympian gods (atleast in original mythology) which are... well, reckless and unapologetic, I guess.
He actually does! And theseus backtracks so hard Theseus: Why, look, Asterius! It seems the fiend has brought some sort of nondescript yarn-ball! Not seen the likes of it. Indeed, it holds no sway on me, at all! Asterius: King. The princess Ariadne was my sister, if you don't recall. Please do not denigrate her memory. You're making me upset. Theseus: Ah, no, my friend!! I meant you no offense. But I'd no love for her, was that my fault?! Tsk, forgive me. I...I shall seek her out. Someday or night. But first!! This daemon has to be destroyed. Together, no?!
Zag: "I think it speaks to how our pride can be our downfall?" Skelly: "And have I mentioned that it cost a lot of coins?" Guess Charron is really rich there... And, how is Skelly 'imports' the goods down there without no one noticing😂😂
well, glad to see Nyx has Ares in the friendzone, and was just teaching him stuff about the underworld... Nyx also mentions Athena, wonder if she taught her stuff as well since Athena mentioned she was interested in Nyx like Ares did
I don't think Ares was seeking Nyx for a romantic relationship, he's just interested in her and simply wanted to speak with her personally in a casual way
Isn’t Ariadne Dionysus wife? And I find it ironic that the most faithful and devoted husbands among Greek gods aren’t the ones you would think first (Hades/Persephone with hades being god of the dead, Eros/Psyche with Eros being a god of lust and Dionysus/Ariadne with Dio being the god of wine). You would think first would be too busy in his work, second would chase women around and third being an abusive drunk yet here we are
