James has an opportunity to make an extreme amount of money in a nickel mine located in the Australian outback. He needs to raise a substantial line of credit though to develop the mine. The consortium he belongs to agrees to allow him to keep a million pounds worth of bearer bonds at his bank to establish the credit line.
Quite a strong episode for Sutton. He’s always appeared too good to be true of course so it’s good to get some background on him.
Classic quote:
“His kind don’t mind sticking to the rules, because they made them…”
More on the plot below, but there are spoilers.
Cast:
Gerald Harper as James Hadleigh
Hilary Dwyer as Jennifer Hadleigh
Peter Dennis as Sutton
Hugh Sullivan as John Simpson
James Maxwell as Peter Kane
Ambrosine Phillpotts as Aunt Helen
Hugh Martin as Herr Hahne
Charles Rea as Superintendent Hart
First broadcast Friday 17th August 1973 at 9.00pm
Writer: David Ambrose / Production Design: Andrew Drummond / Director: Tony Wharmby
Plot continued.... Meanwhile after Sutton receives an enigmatic telephone call from an old friend (a conversation which just happens to be overheard by Jennifer) he begins acting rather strangely. The man, Peter Kane, has just been released from prison. Sutton was involved in a shady scheme with Kane several years before when at the time Sutton was running his own antiques business. Stolen property was involved and Kane is blackmailing Sutton.
Kane then turns up for dinner (and is staying for a couple of days) posing as a author who is writing a book on the architect who designed Melford (amongst many other prominent buildings in the area). Jennifer has her suspicions about him. She recognises him as the voice on the telephone speaking to Sutton. She and James then search Kane’s room and discover a sheet of paper with lots of attempts to forge James’ signature on it. James tells Jennifer that he was introduced to Kane at a reception given by John Simpson, the man who has set up the bearer bonds deal. It’s clear that foul play is afoot and James and Jennifer lay a trap…
Sutton is not quite so perfect after all. He’s not a villain though. Kane used him before (and cost him his business in the process) and he’s using him again here.

At least it was only the dog that Jennifer snapped at in this episode. Ambrosia Philpotts offering us, as per usual, her funny turn as Aunt Helen.
@FoogouFilms
@FoogouFilms Год назад
Ambrosia popped up on TPTV's The Footage Detectives a couple of weeks go being interviewed about a West End play in the late 60s - she was exactly the same in real life as in Hadleigh! I think I could have tolerated perhaps 20 mins maximum in her company.

I remember James Maxwell a few years earlier playing Henry VII in a series called The Shadow of the Tower. The BBC were rather hoping it would be as successful as its previous two series on the Tudors, The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Elizabeth R. Possibly due to Henry VII not having the same charisma as his son or granddaughter, it wasn't a hit with the viewers at the time. Although I have to say I watched it a couple of years ago and thought it was rather good.

I recall him popping up in numerous programmes of the period. I see a clip of The Shadow of the Tower appears at the top of his IMDB page: www.imdb.com/name/nm0561718/ That series seems to have passed me by. I see also he was in Bill Brand, you mentioned a little while ago, and Oppenheimer from 1980 - which I started to watch when it was re-shown on BBC4 recently, but couldn't get into it for some reason. And Enemy at the Door of course. I'm starting to look out for series so far not represented on RU-vid for when my uploads of Hadleigh finish in early February - and too from when Thomas and Sarah comes to an end next month. Ideally it would be a non-BBC channel due to copyright issues. Most are already up there. Any ideas? This also goes out to anyone else reading these comments.

I thought the Henry VII was one of the best Tudor series actually, but his reserved, cool and scheming character didn't really much up to Henry VIII or Elizabeth in the public imagination.
@davidfogarty2220
@davidfogarty2220 Год назад
@@adagietto2523 Yes it was good. Although I think another reason it didn't have the same impact with the public as Henry VIII and Elizabeth R did, was possibly due to a lack of interesting and strong supporting characters like Thomas Cromwell, the Duke of Norfolk and the wives (obviously) and withElizabeth R, the Earls of Leicester and Essex and Walsingham. To be honest although I did see the In the Shadow of the Tower quite recently I can't, apart from his wife and Perkin Warbeck, recall any of them. Mind you, that could be due to a fading memory!

James Maxwell has a lot of gray hair here compairing to, let's say, The Saint episode 3 years before that. T.P. McKenna also met the same fate in the early 70s unfortunately.
