In the penultimate episode of the entire series, things are starting to get desperate for James, time is running out where the bank is concerned. Meanwhile one of his tenant farmers Brian Ainsworth needs help paying off a loan that James acted as guarantor for. James can’t help him but can’t tell him the real reason why - if it gets out that James is in danger of having to sell Melford then he will have no chance of saving it. The issue becomes more pronounced when he learns that the Gazette are looking for a story.
(Spoliers from here)
Meanwhile James is more than a little surprised when Stella Clisby turns up unannounced. She claims to not have an ulterior motive for her visit but James is not so sure, especially when Hadleigh gets a phone call from her boss enquiring about the sale of Melford.
Hadleigh Favours Myra Frances
Myra Frances plays Stella Clisby who makes a surprise return, she knows James is in trouble and genuinely wants to help him.
There’s a nice guest appearance from Gordon Jackson as businessman Alan Mannett, who is acting as middle man in the potential sale. Knowing that he is completely backed into a corner Hadleigh tells Mannett to go ahead with the sale.
Hadeigh, knowing what dire straits Ainsworth is in, asks the bank for one last favour. By this point Ainsworth (another brilliant performance from Michael Elphick) is at breaking point. His wife has lost the baby she was expecting and the bailiffs have turned up to execute a county court judgement against him. Hadleigh turns up in the middle of all this and finds himself staring down the barrel of a shotgun. Unfortunately when the press get hold of the story and turn into a “siege” situation Mannett’s clients withdraw their offer.
A real downbeat but fabulous episode, there’s a very sad moment when Hadleigh tells Sutton that he has to give Sutton notice. Hadleigh has simply run out of money and can’t afford to keep him.

ITV are idiots! They ended this series, when it was at its peak! Myra Francis and James Hadley should have been married and that would have been a great finally! The chemistry with them two was absolutely electric! Myra has got it!

Yes. I can't think how many times I must have seen that episode over the decades. Made me think also of a similar meeting with the same monarch in The Duchess of Duke Street, which I re-watched a few years back on DVD. I think someone already has that series up on YT.

Yes, I will be sad too when it comes to an end next week. Could happily watch it week after week for some considerable time. I'll be uploading episodes week by week from series one (following the 2009 documentary on Hadleigh) which aren't already on my channel - but available elsewhere - so that I there will be a Hadleigh one-stop-shop, as it were.

There is the option to here a narrated version of the final episode, by Gerald Harper - then, the following week, a 2009 documentary on Hadleigh, again with Gerald Harper, inlcuding other cast members, writer etc. Then, I'll be adding episodes from Series 1 that aren't already on my channel.

The opening scene showing Micky Elphick walking across a field with a shotgun under his arm, knowing it would turn up later in a very threatening manner.

This show came out before my time, so that's why I've never heard of it. Is this the type of show that I need to follow in chronological order like with "The Travelling Man" and "Floodtide"?
