The 2024 Hadlow Down Steam Rally in Tinkers Park is an even that starts poorly for me with a steep climb from the car park to the entrance. It wasn’t so bad back in the day, but with all my camera gear, sarnies and backpack, it’s a bit of a struggle now I’m nearing my dotage. I mean, my knees have to last the whole day. It’s worth the effort though. The amount of big steam is remarkable.
The only problem for me was the number of children there, making it difficult to video. If there are just a couple, I can ask parents if it’s OK to include them or, if not, pixel out their faces, but it’s difficult when there are a lot. And there were a lot of ’em. I’m not suggesting they should be banned and, if anything, kids enjoying themselves and being surprised by the big traction engines and rollers, and, just maybe, becoming fans, is the best thing of it.
The operators are universally pleasant, despite being asked the same questions time after time. Well worth a visit. I forget the entry price, so it must have been cheap. Go to www.writewheel.uk for a few more images of the day and for more videos on mechanical things.
