Hapcheon Haeinsa Temple (합천 해인사 ), home of Tripitaka Koreana
해인사 팔만대장경과 장경판전
Haeinsa Temple is one of the three jewel temples of Korean Buddhism. It was founded by two monks in 802 during the reign of King Aejang of Silla. “Haein” means “truly enlightened world of Buddha”.
One of the most important treasure, kept in Haeinsa Temple is Tripitaka Koreana, or "Palman Daejanggyeong," 81,258 woodblocks containing the entire Buddhist canon divided into three categories: the Buddha’s teachings (sutra); the Vinaya - precepts and rules to be observed by Buddhist monks and nuns; and the Abhidharma - annotations and commentaries on the sutras. Tripitaka Koreana was acknowledged a World Cultural Heritage in 1995 together with Janggyeong Panjeon, the building that stores the sutras. When discovered, some of the wooden blocks were brought in into a museum to be studied and preserved in a control condition, but scientists soon discovered the wooden blocks are degrading. The storage building offers great ventilation all year round, preserving the treasure from hard weather conditions as direct sunlight.
The temple stay program in Haeinsa Temple starts with a historic walk around the premises of the temple, culminating with being able to get into Janggyeong Panjeon and see with your own eyes Tripitaka Koreana. Other visitors of the temple are allowed only outside of the building.
Attending night and morning prayers is always a highlight. One of the best experiences is the meditation (seon, zen) practice with a monk. One of the great ways to experience it is walking meditation. Lotus leaves tea with a monk turned into RU-vid sensation is another great moment of the temple stay program.
