Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos! Please subscribe for more nerdy videos of guitar gear.
Today, we have another pedal from the tube guru Jim Hagerman over in Hawaii! This is his DISTORT from his Black series - all of which retail at $129, so a real bargain in the world of boutique pedals. It's a completely unique design that creates clipping using transistor cutoff rather than diodes or transistor saturation. What that means, I don't really know...I ain't a circuit guru! But it does sound fantastic at all levels of gain.
This is actually one of Jim's prototypes - which is identical to the production run in every way, aside from the fact that they have twice the output level of this unit. So today, I'll be running the Level all the way up, which is unityish - but imagine it's at midday, as that's where it would be were you to buy one. :-)
What do you think? Gritty and gnarly? Or not for you? Comment below!
Guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Standard w/ OX4 Beanos. Recorded through a Hughes & Kettner Puretone (Fane Ascension F70; Aston Spirit Condenser, '70s Sennheiser MD441 & sE R1 ribbon) with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic.

Wow, I wasn't expecting a unique kind of clipping, very cool. I dig the sound and the price is right too, definitely a contender for me. Thanks, Joe!

I've just recently got a Hagerman tube overdrive pedal, really awesome sounding pedal.

Love the low end when everything's cranked! Nice push!! Wondering how this sounds with more gain and different pickups. Indeed more of a overdrive than a real distortion pedal by today's standards.

Yeah it's not _super_ high gain...but definitely crunchy enough for me :-)

@@JoePerkinsMusic I might get one, really a nice pedal and just add some modern distortion pedal in my chain. Not sure if high gain tube distortion exist, but that would be beyond cool.

@@gimmenames9039 The only high gain tube distortion I've tried is the Effectrode Tube Drive....it can do cleaner sounds too, but cranked up it really is a gain beast!

Super simple, huh? Not even an EQ knob. Kind of light in the distortion department, but what it has sounds pretty nice and natural. Less distortion and more like overdrive to my ear.

Yeah, it's not a gain monster - but for edgy drive tones, it's ace :-)
