Today, we have another pedal from the tube guru Jim Hagerman over in Hawaii! This is his DISTORT from his Black series - all of which retail at $129, so a real bargain in the world of boutique pedals. It's a completely unique design that creates clipping using transistor cutoff rather than diodes or transistor saturation. What that means, I don't really know...I ain't a circuit guru! But it does sound fantastic at all levels of gain.
This is actually one of Jim's prototypes - which is identical to the production run in every way, aside from the fact that they have twice the output level of this unit. So today, I'll be running the Level all the way up, which is unityish - but imagine it's at midday, as that's where it would be were you to buy one. :-)
What do you think? Gritty and gnarly? Or not for you? Comment below!
Guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Standard w/ OX4 Beanos. Recorded through a Hughes & Kettner Puretone (Fane Ascension F70; Aston Spirit Condenser, '70s Sennheiser MD441 & sE R1 ribbon) with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic.
