Part 1 of 3 - Are valve overdrives any good? I try the Hagerman Tube Overdrive

This pedal from Jim Hagerman seems like a great place to start my journey into the world of valve powered overdrives. To my ears, it’s not entirely transparent - it seems to add a tiny touch of Velcro fuzz to the sound, especially as the gain gets higher. So far I’m really enjoying it. Time will tell….. Here’s a link to Jim’s website:

@@paulstaffordcook8799 Jim Hagerman really blew my mind..I was curious about how tube bias and sag were affected when running tube voltage at 9volts..as this starves the plate voltage and essentially erases your harmonic content potential...he explained it in great detail how he's able to boost these internal voltages to well over 209-250 volts giving the 12ax7 everything it needs to shine and bias correctly...smart guy...good teacher..hit him up..he's very cool and loves to talk pedals

Nicely done Paul.👌 I think the words you are looking for might be sound distinction and clarity. The depth of sound is expected from any type of tube device whether it's an amp or pedal, but the sound influence from the Hagerman was very distinct. I was actually surprised to be able to that much of the effect through your phone set-up, it came across quite well. Of course I am a Marshall guy, so I recognized that stand alone sound, but the Hagerman clearly filled that space very well. The sound separation was probably be the most surprising for me, I actually didn't expect it to sound that good. It will be interesting to hear the Kingsley Page next week.😉 Funny how you had the kid at Christmas time look and smile the whole video.😁😆😂🤣🤙 Cheers.
@paulstaffordcook8799

This is an interesting one Paul. Nice tone from that drive, but to my ears I've heard just as gorgeous tones in your previous videos with less expensive drives. Maybe a back to back comparison would shift my opinion. Drive pedals are a massive sink hole. If you fall in you never get out. I've heard great tones from £40 drives and terrible tones from £200 drives. This does depend on the player and as I love your playing I find that you can achieve a great tone regardless of the drive you use. I'm still trying to figure out what drives to put on my new pedalboard. I've used multi effects units for a long time but now fancy going the pedals route. Looking forward to your next video. All the best.
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 2 года назад
You make such a good point Archie, in that I was very happy with the tones from just my amps and / or other solid state pedals….. Having lived with both the Hagerman and the Page for over a week I do think there’s something very “chewy” when playing the valve pedals…. But I think I’ll do a “Valve OD’s v’s Solid State ODs” very soon. So don’t go spending any money on valve pedals just yet 🤣

I've got a couple of really nice overdrives that l use on my board. The thing that l always seem to end up doing is unconsciously adjusting them until they sound the same. And even then that sound just tries to emulate the amps sound. I'm convinced that a nice boost pedal is the way to go. We're all searching for the ultimate overdrive pedal and l'm not sure it exists.

if you are over driving the Marshall amplifier to start with, we cannot hear the the break-up quality of the pedal itself. Although this may be how you use it, the overdriven sound we are hearing is a product (most I suspect) of pushing the pre-amp of the Marshall.

Valve pedals may change depending on the preamp, headroom and wattage of the amp it's run into. My Twin has massive headroom and can feel stiff. The compression and envelope of a great tube drive pedal add a well-needed touch to the note. Into a small low watt amp with cathode bias it might compress too much and create a softer bloom and lack of definition. But will depend on what you want as a player. I don't do metal or shred so I don't really need definition and extreme articulation like a Revv Amp.
@paulstaffordcook8799
@paulstaffordcook8799 2 года назад
Good points electricj5. Yes, I’ve recently discovered this too. And also how much of a difference it makes running them into a clean amp, versus one that is already breaking up slightly.

@@paulstaffordcook8799 very good point. I tried my pedal board through a few tweed fender clones (Victoria Harvard copy and a ‘59 Tremolux) and they sounded a lot closer to a fuzz. Of course you have to change your settings as a tweed is very different from a BF.

Yep I was a firm believer that every pre-signal needed to go through a valve ... Just to put that tone on it ,,, love my tube pedals ... Got on the new fender pedal that's got the micro-tube ,,, works well but now I've been messing wiith a bunch of analog clipping chips and a few digital amp modelers ,,, all going in the effects send "Poweramp only" and that really sound good ... Now can go either into the amp or cab Sim 2 mixer 4 recording or live ... Something other than straight tube-amp tone ... good point ... D

Great playing what's the tune? Sounds like Adele Skyfall, Europa Santana, and parisian walkways Gary Moore in a very nice way. Did I get close?

Thank you Gary. And yes - you got close…. It’s my take on some James Bond themes, mixed with some of my heroes (Tom Bukovac, Gary Moore, Santana). Well noticed 😊

Hi Paul. I’m using 11s on the Gibsons and 10s on the Tele & Strat.

Could this be good with a Katana?

Hi Neil. I’ve not tried it yet with a solid state amp - but I will do that probably within the next 2 videos. But I can bet that will very much be like adding a whole new drive channel to a Katana.

Can you imagine that Valve surviving on a dark stage getting stopped on 🤔

Fair point Andy. Thankfully it has that metal hoop that will protect a direct stomp.
