Hainanese Chicken Chop is not from China!?
This perfect crossover dish between the West and the East is actually from Malaysia! It was originally created by Hainanese Chinese who migrated here to Malaysia and started working as chefs for British families during the colonial days.
Crispy Tender chicken thigh fried to perfection is topped with a signature sweet sour sauce, served with fluffy wedges or fries, and mixed vegetables. And this, over time, became a popular dish amongst Malaysians with nostalgic sentiment.

2 whole legs of chicken
Salt and pepper
Yellow onion
Cherry tomatoes
Sweet peas
Oil
Butter
Flour
Tomato paste
Chicken stock

Sherson Lian kicked off his TV career with (and still is!) hosting ‘5 Rencah 5 Rasa’ on TV3 Malaysia, a cooking show that has been on the air the past 10 years, with 24 seasons and 1500+ recipes and counting! Sherson Lian is the co-founder of Makhan by Kitchen Mafia, a restaurant in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia and Kitchen Mafia, an F&B solutions company that offers catering, private dining/chef's table sessions, and restaurant/menu consultancy among other services.

I made this tonight for dinner. Its very good. I added chilli flakes in the sauce. Very nostalgic if you read the history of the Hainanese chicken chop.

Easiest and the best tasting hainanese/oriental chicken chop. reminds me of my childhood chicken chop that my parents used to take me to. Haven't found a similar tasting one sold by other shops. this recipe just hit the spot. Try it guys!

Back when I lived in Malaysia, I used to order this at Station 1 cafe and it was really good! I don't know if they still have it on their menu though, it's been years since I've been back to Malaysia. I miss hainanese chicken chop!

Sherson , your Sauce look much yummy as I hate to order Hainanese Chicken Chop in Penang as most of them are tasteless and no aroma, light pinkish colour sauce pour over the Deep fried chicken chop.

I’d go with a malt vinegar or something pungent, balsamic might work too. I mean it won’t be exactly the same but will definitely give it an acidic kick it needs. But yea just abit will go along way. So go easy
