Living with a hair transplant may not be what you expected. Have you ever wondered what it means to actually LIVE day to day with a hair transplant? Have you considered how it looks "in the wild"? Joe Tillman shows you what he has to go through every day to style the 25,000 hairs that he has had transplanted and gives you a worst case scenario of how his hair behaves while shopping in public in Ultra HD 4K resolution. You get to see what his hair really looks like in everyday conditions in a way you've never seen before.
This is a "best case scenario" for patients with aggressive hair loss so if you can't handle these compromises then hair restoration may not be for you.

I saw it 4 years ago, and I love the fact I came across it. I hated Joe, he ruined my life and My Happiness telling me not to get a transplant, in reality all he did was stop me from making an uninformed decision, saved me from ruining my life by a bad surgery and ruining my donor hair. And the depression that would lead to. Hopefully soon I'll be ready to get one, without Joe I would be lost

Thanks! Don't misunderstand, I love my hair! But, I know it's not ideal for others and I've had some people tell me it's "not enough" or the hairline is too high, or the crown is too thin for their liking, etc. etc. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and some beholders expect a lot more than what physics and match can provide. These little things I deal with every day will put others off from even considering hair transplant surgery, which is what I want, because if this won't make aggressive hair loss patients happy, nothing will.

I appreciate Joe's channel and all he does to sincerely educate on hair transplants. I appreciate also what he is saying he's doing with this video - "let's show for real what it's like to..." perhaps have real hair in the real world... bad hair day? Except I also don't see how any of these issues is different from just having hair. If one doesn't style one's hair, it may look unstyled. Okay. And if you're styling with some motivation to make up for some thinning areas. Okay. But I still don't get how any issues presented here are anything more than normal issues. Hair blows in wind is the only thing I'm getting here. And if you wanted your hair to remain in a style, use hair spray? Hair blows in wind; hair gets ruffled in hats. ?? You do know these are issues of just having hair, right? Again, ... really not trying to sound like ... bad here. I comment here to see if I'm missing something?

this is one of the best videos I've seen where you address common issues with honesty and frankness. I've had 2 procedures (10 yrs ago) and I'm super happy but as he says: you'll never get back the density you once had and if a doctor promises that, walk away. My transplants allow me to look amazing in "most" situations to the point that most people don't know I've had work. sometimes I go extra short on the back where it shows my scar and some people ask and I tell them. i wish I could post pics... I don't endorse ANY doctor, I'm just saying this for people to whom ht is an option.

Honestly amazing! Always wondered if hairs that were transplanted needed more careful drying. I thought transplanted hair might not be as ankered in as non transplanted hair. Also like lots of things a lot of people don’t know about it like the fact that you won’t get original density. Great job and your hair looks really great.

I commend you on your honesty, Joe. Basically you're educating people on the fact that a hair transplant means you have a head of hair, but not as full a head, with the styling challenges that entails. Good to help people make an educated decision. Oh, and your transplant looks great!

Good video Joe! It's vulnerable reality check for people, that a transplant is not the same as a perfect full head of hair. It is an illusion of density, that is still likely to "inconvenience" you on a daily basis. Everyone can try to work on their emotional preparedness and try to be less self-conscious, because it is "too easy" to slip into making mountains out of molehills.

It is meant to make you think. Once you learn that it isn't a perfect procedure and that screw ups can and DO happen, and you still want to move forward then you'll be a better candidate mentally. But, if it scares you to think about the possible downsides and you decide not to have the procedure, you're better off.

*I do not get why most people (at least in the comment section here) seem to miss the entire point he's trying to make in his videos. It's not about making you get or not get a hair transplant. He's trying to show you the results of case where someone with severe hairloss, got a result that is above average. If you like what you see and have a similar degree of balding, then it's up to you if you want to go through with a hair transplant or not. He's simply trying to point out what's possibly the maximum what you're going to get. He does not mean he's not satisfied. He simply means that if his results would not satisfy you, if you have a similar degree of balding, then you'll problably get dissapointed, because hair transplants are great, but not perfect. That's all he's trying to say here. He wants you to question yourself if this is truly what you'll want by giving yourself a realistic expectation*

Very informative with some good insight. Your hair isn't very thick so that does effect your look with hats and everyday outside look. I feel you're one more transplant away from your hairline looking brilliant. Still looks good.
@jakewest6775
@jakewest6775 7 лет назад
Your hair looks fine... like normal, messy, wet hair... poor argument to not have a transplant... you had multiple transplants and are clearly very pedantic about the way your hair looks. Imagine how you'd feel if you were bald again. Your reasons against a transplant are petty and trivial in the eyes of someone who is going bald.. people watching your channel would much rather have some coverage and deal with messy wet hair on occasion than be bald. Your previous video where you initially say not to get a transplant and then point out that the hair on the side of your head is uneven.. as well as showing the scars and patterns that can result from fut/fue was informative... this vid is just silly. People already know what happens to wet hair, or hair without product in it.. you look like a normal person with hair... which is what we want.
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 7 лет назад
Thank you for your comments, Jake West. You're completely missing the point of this particular video. To me, my hair is great. I'm beyond happy with it and every day I'm thankful for the decisions I made and the care I received from Dr. Wong. It is to the point that I am not concerned with the appearance of thinning in the slightest. However, while many have shown their results after having had a hair transplant no one has taken the time to show a "day in the life" type of documentation that many people ask for. I see it all the time, "show us what it looks like outside" comments made on the various forums because people are sick of seeing controlled lighting conditions from patients where almost all of the results are indoors or taken with harsh on camera flash. What I've just done is share a high bitrate 4K video of my own hair out in the open, outside, on a miserably wet day. For better or for worse, this has never been done before. I recorded this in 4K 100mb so that it showed the most detail and realism possible. Furthermore, I've had people meet me in person and they've actually said "why didn't you get your hairline placed lower?" or "Why didn't you get the crown filled in?" and similar other questions. I've even had patients say that they would not be happy with my results because to them my result is incomplete. I'm glad they said these things because it tells me they haven't a clue about how hair restoration works and while they may have been ideal candidates because of their physical characteristics they were poor candidates because of their expectations and I subsequently turned them down for surgery. Thank you again for your comments.
@jakewest6775
@jakewest6775 7 лет назад
Okay from that perspective it makes sense.. I've never seen a transplant that hasn't been perfectly styled. From what I saw It just seemed like you were trying to convince people against a hair transplant because of how it looked when it's wet or with no product.. which was silly to me. I'm planning to get a transplant soon. I've consulted a doc and your channel is extremely helpful.. if I wanted to ask you more questions, do you prefer them in the comments section so you can make a vid about the questions you receive or would you rather be emailed?

To be perfectly honest with you, I'm living with a hair transplant and it was some of the best money that I ever spent in my life. Especially when I'm going through old pictures and looking at my completely receding hair line pre hair transplant. I'd bet that if the author of this video had to go back in time back to his bald head that he would do it all over again.
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 7 лет назад
Hi Jeffrey, congratulations on your results. Don't misunderstand, I love my hair. Just yesterday I was styling my hair and realized I was having a particularly good hair day:) I know you know what I mean. This video's purpose is to help those that have unrealistic expectations understand what the best case scenario would be if they have 10,000 to 12,000 grafts and by making this video I have encouraged some viewers and discouraged others. That is my goal because those that are discouraged by results like mine would wind up being miserable while trying to achieve perfection. They may have 100% yield from the procedure(s) and the clinic and others that understand the realities of the procedure would all agree the result is excellent but the patient is still unhappy. I've even seen, many times, unhappy patients with excellent results go public with their complaints unnecessarily. Simply telling someone what the best they can hope for is much different than showing them, like I'm doing here, and that is the point of my first few videos. Most likely, from here on, the Hair Transplant Class will be more neutral and positive but I'm always going to remind people that this is an elective procedure and the safest procedure is the procedure you don't have. Thank you for your comment.

Joe..now a days there are plenty of cases where people started off with worse than your hair before HTs..and after 2-3 FUE procedures they got much better hair than yours. Your case was a good example, until FUE started to dominate HTs. Back then people looked at your case and got hope. That is no longer true now. There are plenty of better cases now to look up to. I hope you got what I am trying to imply.
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 5 лет назад
I'm not sure what the relevance of your comment is. I made this video to answer a question that I get quite often to this day. I started with a deficit in that I started with two wide strip scars and had a super pluggy hairline on a nearly NW7 bald scalp. Each one of my procedures were small in comparison to what many people get today in that my largest procedure was only 2488 grafts. Strip or FUE is irrelevant as it's the amount of hair moved that makes the visual improvements.

You are such a terrific guy for creating a hair transplant series that educates with such thoroughness. Who knew there were so many issues to consider!I I am sending this to someone who has worried about hair loss for the past few years. By the way, about your comments about you hair at its worst (when kicked out of COSTCO for "bad hair"): most of us people with great hair put up with that sort of unruliness anytime it is windy and/or rainy. What are you thinking! :-) You're "rained on" hair" looked as great as when you had styled it with your infamous hair spray. (By the way, re hair products: have you found any gels that work? There are now gels that work well when applied to wet hair and others when applied to dry hair. Do you ever use a hair drier? Perhaps you can do an episode on hair products that work best for transplanted hair and how to guide your hair stylist when getting your hair cut.) Thank you for your commitment in serving the hair challenged public. And know that your videos have "value added" for those of us who love someone who is hair challenged. Judy

Your 'hat hair' actually still looks pretty good! Can I ask - how often do you have your haircut, and what do you ask for at the barber, you mention 'the sweet spot' for length, what is that? Does your barber know you've had a HT? Good video anyway, cheers Joe, and your hair looks really good.
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 7 лет назад
Much appreciated! I get my haircut about once every three weeks. Yes, my barber/stylist knows about my transplants and she has to deal with the changes in growth angles when she cuts it. I mention the growth angle issue in class # 001...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gck6fAtB5Wk.html I've got some footage I shot about six months ago of that experience as well that I couldn't fit into this video. I'll fit it into another class. The "sweet spot" for length is simply the length that your hair looks best. Because we are dealing with less than native density but with full terminal hairs, some lengths will look really thin while others will look really full. Personally, I have three sweet spots. The shortest is how I wear it now. If is gets a bit longer then it looks worse but then as it grows out more, it looks fuller. I found the longest sweet spot after I stayed fast in my quest for long hair and I found a length that reaches nearly to my chin and it doesn't involve comb overs or even sprays because the messiness and fly away nature works in it's favor. It's hard to describe but it works.

This just goes to show, a hair transplant isn't going to magically give you confidence; What I watched was a man with hair that looked perfectly fine become self conscious about minute details of his hair as soon as i might have gotten a a tiny bit messed up.
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 7 лет назад
You'd be surprised how many patients would be sick if this happened to them. I'm fine with it, and accept everything about it, both good and bad and while most would not see any of this as being bad some do, and this video is for them because if they can't accept these "issues" then they may be disappointed with their own procedures especially since this is about as good as it gets for someone with as much hair loss as I had. Thank you for your comment.
@BrotherKellerman

I speak from experience, not with a hair transplant but from weight loss. I lost 50 pounds and ended up being more self conscious about how i looked. Its weird, it shouldn't be that way... but it is.
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 7 лет назад
It's no so much me getting self-conscious as it is showing others what my hair looks like when it isn't "perfect" because a LOT of guys would be VERY self conscious of these issues. I deal with it easily and the "no hairspray" thing and how my hair flies around without it is the only thing that bugs me but even then it is minor. It's kind of tough to explain but I think part of me want to avoid the "comb over" look that I personally associate with this issue. Thank you for your comment.
@def4747
@def4747 6 лет назад
I agree with the first comment. I didn't see any problems with your hair. I can't even tell you had a hair transplant. all those problems looks like tiny details that everyone with normal hair has to deal with. Maybe it's just because you're coming from so far.. you almost had no hair before the transplant. so maybe you forgot stuff like how hats used to mess up your hair when you had some..?

The hair he has looks good in the elements. It's just high up on his forehead/receded a bit. He could have more transplant to lower it if he wanted, provided he has enough donor hair and money isn't an issue!

people don't ask that question. what is it like having a transplant on a daily basis.
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 7 лет назад
They'll ask more specific questions like, "how do I style it?" or "do I have to go to a certain stylist?" and other such questions. This addresses the bigger picture:) I do have video of my stylist cutting my hair over the summer as well which I'll try to incorporate into another video soon.

what about go for hair transplant number two? I saw video where was fully transplanted head. and the japan guy had to go three times to make it really good look. Mb you have not finished it for 100%.. and I think lot of ppl would do it becuase what you have now is still better than what you had...

Two, three, four? Different people need different amounts of hair and they can't always be completed in one procedure. Obviously, it works well when done right. In my case, after nine surgeries, I'm done. I could have more and sometimes I do get the bug to have another but I really don't need it. Thank you for your comments.

The real question is, if you cut or trim tranplanted hairs, will they grow back at the same rate of speed at which your natural hair grows ?
@dougieladd
@dougieladd 7 лет назад
TBH it looks absolutely fine to me... wet hair is wet hair... even people with full heads of hair have bad hair days. You're over thinking it dude. :)
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 7 лет назад
Hi Doug. No, it's not that I'm overthinking it. I'm letting others that WILL over think it what I personally deal with. I know my hair looks good considering it is a full reconstruction. Even though it is thin in some conditions it does look natural, which is the point. But, some people would think that this isn't enough density or coverage or that too much scalp is visible and they will decide not to go through with surgery, which is the best option. For those that do decide to go through with surgery they now know the limitations even with as many as 25,000 hairs transplanted.

@danielkremsner1202

hey, I actually have a question that hardly has been addressed but might be interesting to many people (maybe worth addressing in a video?). Since medicine uses stem cells to generate skin for burn victims and some hospitals are already in testing phases with implanting organs that have been created with stem cells why is this technique not used for generating your own hair in the laboratory with stem cells. With that you are obviously not limited to the donor area but just grow all the hair needed in the lab and then transplant it. Do you know if anything like that is being developed and if not why this is the case I am sure Im not the only one that thought about that - if medicine can grow functioning organs, hair should be even easier .. no? Thanks a lot
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 7 лет назад
Hi Daniel, Thank you for your question. The use of stem cells to generate new hair is not a new concept and several companies are exploring various takes on this idea as we speak. While the idea of multiplying follicles may seem simple compared to other feats of science (remember Dolly the sheep?) it is in reality quite difficult. Remember, we're not talking about replicating one item one time. We're talking about taking cell samples of a hair and having it multiplied tens of thousands of times and reliably. That's the challenge. Hair has been "grown" in labs and in test settings but it is the consistency issue that gets in the way, among others.

Hi Joe. With regards to styling your hair, what exactly do you use to keep it in place and build volume? My hair is a lot like yours. Very thin. Side part. A lot of times ends up looking limp and flat. I’ve also realized that using gel on said thin hair just clumps it all together very easily and unless I run a comb through it later in the day, it’s a bad look. Maybe a strong hairspray is better?

5:18 -5:28 Maybe it's just me, Joe, but don't you think the density should be much better for someone who's had so many surgeries? I feel like I've seen fully bald guys end up with the type of result you have with only 4k grafts or so. Am I missing something? Maybe your transplanted/donor hair was ratehr thin to begin with? How many grafts have you had total? Thanks Joe.
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 2 года назад
If each of my surgeries were big surgeries? Sure, but they weren’t. I was also a bad repair case so doc didn’t have a clean canvas to work with. And yeah, my hair is fine (not thin, there is a big difference) so 10k to 12k grafts on me is nothing like it would be on someone with hair shafts that aren’t so fine.

Joe, how did you go about telling Mrs Tillman about this? I've been considering this for a long time, but I really don't know the best way to explain it to my significant other and family. Oh, and I think your hair looks great!
@hairtransplantchannel
@hairtransplantchannel 7 лет назад
It's pretty simple. Since I worked in the industry, the truth comes out pretty fast. The key was to own it, not hesitate or flinch when asked what I do for a living. Me - "What do you do for a living?" Her - "I'm a concert pianist." Me - "Cool" Her - "And you? What do you do? Me - " I work in a hair transplant clinic." Her - "Really? Why? You're not bald." Me - "Heh heh heh, yeah, well...." And that is how she found out. In fact, that is basically how every first date conversation has gone since 2003 till I got married. Every reaction to this conversation has been positive, and full of questions, because when people (meaning "the ladies") find out what modern hair restoration can do they become fascinated and want to know more. I've got some good stories to go along with this subject. Perhaps I'll make a video with some of my favorite hair transplant stories from the past 25 years. Thank you for your question and for your compliment.

I'm not interested in tying myself down with a routine such as that. Using hairspray is enough of a hassle, I don't want to add concealers to the mix. I'm happy with my hair as it is, too, so I really don't have a desire for concealers in general. Thank you for your question.
