*500, 000 That's still millions of dollars in todays money, but there's a difference. Yeah. Hawaii, and other Pacific islands, / Caribbean islands were terribly abused by the US prior to WW2. I hope the US population can become more aware of such atrocities their government committed, and become more open to providing aid without military intervention. They do it for Israel. They do it for Ukraine. They could 100% do it for Haiti. The US, and other foreign powers are a large contributor to why Haitian politics are so corrupt. Yes, the Haitians hold some accountability for the state of their country, but the US can't act blameless when they shamelessly robbed the poor country multiple times in the past as "compensation" for their aid.
Now I understand why my dad refuses to become an American citizen. I heard him mention the occupation before as a reason but I never looked into it until now. The more I learn about the US the more horrible things I find out that they've done to others and to their own people.

In 1910 Germans controlled 80% of Haitian trade. Hardly any Germans lived in Haiti but land and ports were effectively under German imperial control. It’s very sad that today the popular narrative begins with US imperialist pigs stole $500K gold bars from Haiti - fail to mention it was after the Taft Administration OK'd a $6 Million dollar loan in 1910 to help Haiti out of its growing re-colonization . Then, after 7 Haitian leaders in a few short years were either assassinated or deposed, the country rife with corruption and theft by the elites, AND still Germany, ginning up to WWI while extending its sphere of influence consuming control of so much of Haiti, started buying up land and establishing ports to extend their influence, Wilson then sent in the Marines. American foreign policy in Latin America has always been imperfect at best, in the best possible examples, to horrendous, immoral and unjust in a few of the worst examples, but the kids today only take away “US robbed Haiti blind after murdering, raping and reenslaving Haitians in decades of colonization and atrocity” is an atrocious version of events and gross retellings of history will never make the world a better place.

This 19 year history of the US in Haiti, which started 110 years ago, is the best reason for the US to stay out of Haiti now. It is obvious there is no way for there to be a relationship with the US which is beneficial to Haiti.
