Musically, the melody is the ever-delicious Dan. But in toto, not a favorite of mine. Josie Deacon Blue Aja Black Cow Bad Sneakers I Got The News and of course, the anytime groove *FM,* and a dozen others, are in my playlist. Glad you enjoyed this one; you really can't go wrong with Steely Dan.

Hello Cece, I love Steely Dan. This band is unique in many ways. It's Donald Fagen (keyboard and vocals) and Walter Becker (guitar and bass) 2 guys from New York who moved to LA and hired the best studio musicians to record tracks. They were known for analyzing every detail of a song and after a few good takes would record it 15 or 20 more times listening close and editing the best parts of each take and splicing them together. Sometimes after a good session, the next day they'd have a whole new crew of musicians come in and do the same song again until they found what they heard in their head. They didn't like touring so after 2 years of it, they took 20 years off from the road and just worked on records relying on radio play and record sales until they finally started touring again. Have a great day sweet sister. This whole album is great!

And then she went down to the island, met her a six-foot rasta man, and came back carrying his baby. I'msure hubby didn't contest the divorce! By the way, My band played this song once at a gig and the crowd went NUTS!!

" Papa Doc" Duvalier was ruler of Haiti, and they had a campaign to invite people to their country for a quick and easy divorce without your significant other having to be there. The character hooks up with the local gigolo for a one nighter, and gets pregnant. The shock is when the husband realizes that it ain't his because that gigolo was dark and had kinky hair. Thanks for reacting to this. Fantastic song!

"Papa" is Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier, president of Haiti 1957-1971. He invited Americans to Haiti for quick and easy "no tears, no hearts breakin'" divorces. Great tune, great reaction.

@@CC2Cents_ You're welcome cece. There is so much Steely Dan music to fall in love with, and you've just scratched the surface. If you like their funky, bluesy, jazzy, R&B sound, I highly recommend Black Cow off their masterpiece album Aja, and Babylon Sisters from Gaucho. They recorded around 80 songs as Steely Dan, many more on solo albums, and not a single bad song in their entire catalog.

So good. These guys never settled for anything less the near perfection. The used a multitude of the best studio musicians and back round vocals. And we're so talented themselves. They always knew what they wanted and would never comprise on that sound in the end. I really don't think they made a bad song. You should really dive into these guys!

40 years of the best most original creative Groovin brilliantly-composed and produced pop music by the most prolific duo ever! Do yourself a favor, time travel a bit(almost 30 years) to the last album and very last song Donald Fagen/Walter Becker recorded together, “everything must go” from the album of the same name!!

**THE BACK-STORY** (long post) Reggae was almost unknown to most Americans when this album was released in 1976. The only thing like reggae we'd tasted before were some occasional licks from Eric Burdon & WAR, such as "Spill the Wine" (a neat cut from the Summer of 1970, worthy of future review). However, Don and Walt were not your typical American songwriters. ---------------------------------- The early '70s was a fairly easy time in the generally uneasy history of Haiti. The regime of "Baby Doc" Duvalier was a brutal, authoritarian shit-show, and the country was (as always) the poorest in the hemisphere, but after Nixon restored U.S. aid in '71, its tourist trade flourished. The Duvaliers (pere et fils) took measures to cultivate Haiti's reputation as the "Nevada of the Caribbean" -- an adult paradise where moneyed white foreigners could get away and gamble, get high, get their freak on, and get a cheap and easy divorce. (One might sat that time was Haiti's "Hai Day".)🙃 Of course, all this merriment took place before: The successive epidemics of African Swine Fever and HIV/AIDS in the '80s and '90s; Baby Doc's downfall in 1986 and the unstable regimes that followed; The military coup and Hurricane Jeanne of 2004; The Four-Hurricanes-in-a-Month and the Two-School-Collapses-in-a-Week of 2008; The 7.0 Port-au-Prince Earthquake that killed ~150,000 people in 2010, and; Hurricane Michael in 2016 -- all of which have had a decidedly adverse effect on life and real estate on the West Side of Hispaniola that continues to this day. (And WE think WE have it bad...) ------------------------------ The line "Now we dolly back/Now we fade to black" refers to how scenes of sexual intimacy were once commonly translated to film. The following guitar solo is pure, explicit, musical pornography. ------------------------------ Part of the charm of this song lies in understanding that interracial relationships and children were neither as common nor as socially accepted in the '70s as they are today. So when Babs' baby pops out nine months later, way darker than either she or Clean Willie ("It changed! / It grew! / Then everybody knew! / Semi-mojo -- who's this kinky so-and-so?"), one can just imagine Aunt Mildred and the whole famdamily (hell, the whole damn town!) freaking TFO. ----------------------------- Finally, let it be known that Steely Dan is the deepest, richest rabbit hole in all of music. The oeuvre of Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, and Steely Dan numbers almost 200 tracks and virtually every one of them could have been released as a hit single. Seriously, the shit those dudes left on the cutting floor was better than most artists' best.
