FR-301 Portable Desoldering Gun
-Mains Powered, Portable Desoldering Gun
-Supplied in robust carry case with all the required extras for “plug and play” operation
-Ideal for travelling technicians
-Use of high thermal efficiency N61 series nozzles
-Reduction of solder clogging by improved heating core
-Easy filter maintenace
-Safe and easy nozzle change with the nozzle wrench
This stand-alone desoldering gun is the successor of the Hakko 808 and is one of the best stand-alone desoldering guns on the market. Stand-alone means that this desoldering gun can be used without extra equipment such as a desoldering station. The temperature of this desoldering gun can be easily set and has 4 different settings. Furthermore, the temperature control of this desoldering gun can be set very accurate by using a unique Hakko sensor feedback method.
The FR-301 has improved in several ways compared to the Hakko 808. The filter group now consists of several separate parts, which makes cleaning easier. The suction channel has also been improved, which greatly reduces the chance of clogging. Furthermore, the FR-301 uses the N61 series nozzles that have a high thermal efficiency.
The 'quick change' system makes it very easy to change nozzles. Even when the nozzle is hot.
Like all other Hakko products, this is a 100% original Hakko product that is suitable for 220/230V and has a European plug.

That was a fair review and assessment on the Hakko, Chris.

Nice tool! yes a plus the pump is directly in the handle, no long flex hose, that can lose vaccum by scrincking. yes stand is to cheap looking for that device. Even cheap desoldering comes with 3 tips. for 350 you expect this better. but a great tool. good tools you allway pay for more. nice review Chris!

If you do enough desoldering buy the Duratool or one of the many clones they work very well and they are excellent value for money.

Nice review Chris - Your reminiscing took me through 5 decades of my life, I think my first sucker was around 8 years old and cost me 4 quid - its like Triggers broom and has had a few tips and a washer or two. I bought one of these Hako tools last year, but its still in the box. I might open it up and see how it changes my life. Keep up the good work Best regards Mark

I think I was 10 when I got my first solder sucker you must have been early developer. It is amazing I still have my sucker I found it after many years in my grandads shed after he had passed away. It was nice to be reunited. Sometimes old tools are just like a time machine and transport you back to many a year ago. Thanks for watching my very best regards Chris

Regular filter changing on the pace is essential to maintain vacuume, however you should try the double sided print desoldering test again but with your board pre heated to about 100 degrees and see how easier it is to remove components without damaging the pcb , you will also find components remove easier if you add more fresh solder before removing .
@allthegearnoidea6752
@allthegearnoidea6752 2 года назад
I think the Pace is overrated and overpriced as you could see on the test it has half the vacuum of the Hakko and is slower in building that vacuum. The Pace has new filters before I used it. It’s probably the ST75 base unit that is at fault but give it cost £900 I’m not risking my money with them again. I will try preheating next time but if you have done as much desoldering as me in a production environment ie thousands of ICs you know some boards just don’t desolder very well.
@michaeldranfield7140

@@allthegearnoidea6752 Everything Pace is over priced but most of mine is over 20 years old so if you factor in the longevity it may not be as expensive as it first appears ?

Another Great Entertaining And Educational Video Chris (Your Geting Better at This Video Shenanigans) It is a Lovely Bit Of Kit Apart From The Home Made Stand But a Bit Pricey For a Man Of My Humble Means he he I See There Are Lots Of Cheaper Ones On Ebay But They All Seem To Be 100v Ones And Then Theres Duty To Pay On Them !! I Have 2 Of The Cheeper Suckers Like You But I Bought An Engineer One Plus Spare Silicon Tubes And It Looks a Quality Bit Of Kit (have not used it yet) Just Arrived Today Infact Thanks For Entertaining The Masses Chris Nice One !! Regards mike.

Hello Mike. Thanks for watching. I would recommend the Duratool if you want something similar. They work very well until the heating element burns out but the spares are very cheap and the work well, probably around 100 on Amazon or eBay

Very nice review, Chris. I find that I use all three techniques - wick, manual sucker and powered sucker - depending on the circumstances (and my mood too) Can't beat that Engineer sucker for quality - I've been using one for years now. I have enjoyed the whole series - thank you for sharing it with us. Regards, David.
@allthegearnoidea6752
@allthegearnoidea6752 2 года назад
I appreciate the quality of the engineer suck but I have found they can clog rather easily. Because the nozzle end is metal it can expand when expelling the solder. So the one I have now has a bent shaft. I think it’s essential to have a few different techniques as sometimes it does go right first time. I think damage is almost unavoidable unless you cut the IC off. Just depends on the board manufacture and the relative leg and hole sizes.
@davidv1289
@davidv1289 2 года назад
@@allthegearnoidea6752 I agree, the Engineer sucker does have close tolerances - I usually suck up a blob of silicon grease when I start a session and that seems to help keep the solder from sticking. I also agree with lead snipping and frequently use that method during test equipment repairs. Regards, David

Hadn't come across the thick copper wire method before, Chris. Thanks for that. For those with the Duratool desoldering pump, the secret is to allow it *plenty* of time for heat up throughout before using it. Saves a lot of blockages. By the way, what's the weight of the unit in British Standard Dormice?
@allthegearnoidea6752
@allthegearnoidea6752 2 года назад
Unfortunately with inflation being what it is the English Dormice isn’t doing well at the moment but it’s about 17.5 against the grey squirrel futures. I also have a Duratool that I have on my desk at work now. The tool works well but the heating element don’t last long so as I cannot be bothered to change them I just buy a new gun which is about £17 last time I bought one.

Hi Chris. Great video. Loved the old school desoldering methods and never seen the copper wire method before. The Hakko does look like a considerable upgrade to the Duratool. It does look a bit unwieldy and that stand is rubbish but the cartridge removal and choice of tips is vastly superior. I wonder what spares availability is like for the filters, tips, elements etc. Cheers Graham
@allthegearnoidea6752
@allthegearnoidea6752 2 года назад
Hakko has excellent support they are a big name in the soldering world. The Hakko gun is surprisingly lite weight for it’s size but the Duratool is more compact. The Hakko pump is very powerful, much more powerful than the Duratool. I think most people will be happy with the Duratool or similar clone and no need to spend more. If portable use is your thing the Hakko scores but who is these days.
