Hakko FX-888D Soldering Station by American Hakko - How To Set and Use the Password Lockout Feature 

Bought this Iron based on Hakko reputation but regretting my recent FX-888D purchase because of what is possibly the worst user interface on any tool I've ever used. Out of the box the only slightly intuitive setting is changing the temperature a digit at a time via a single button with round robin on the "up" button. Every time I want to mod infrequently used parameters I'll have to spend time finding instruction manual or hunting it down online. .

I wish it required a password before you can ever go into the adjustment mode because the first thing I did with my unit is screw my calibrated temp up thinking I was setting a temp. So now I have no idea how far I've knocked mine out of calibration. It's nice to have such a feature but it's a poor way of getting to it. Had it said cal I would have realized I was recalibrate get but it says adj on the display which made me think adjust temperature level. Now I wonder is there a factory reset??? Or am I going to have to buy a thermometer to fix the freaking calibration??

You could’ve always left out this feature, in favor of a down button.

There is no excuse for the amazingly bad human interface design on a supposedly premium product. Dial adjustment works fine on machines in far more demanding environments like welders (I also weld, repair welders, and have more industrial machines than many pro shops). I suggest Hakko offer a simple dial adjusted version then see which one sells more (profit is why your business exists). WHEN YOUR HUMAN INTERFACE DESIGN FAILS TO BE INTUITIVE THAT MAKES IT BAD. That explanatory videos are required should get that point across but I don't expect Hakko to change since they can coast on component quality and reputation while switching to a more human-friendly layout would entail loss of face.

No where in the manual says Calibration, it says temperature adjustment. This guy in the video says the 1st parameter is temperature adjustment, the 2nd is preset and the 3rd is Calibration mode. You just made it more confusing. The whole manual is a fuckin joke. Good iron though
