Haley did beautiful work for only her fourth project! It took me months, nearly a year, to get that good, and even at that, I was stuck on making granny squares because that, and boring plain double crochet (and single crochet) were all I knew how to do. Now, nearly 49 years and hundreds of projects later, I can do most any stitch, but do enjoy seeing what's on YT so I can keep up with patterns and stitches, just in case anything new comes along (so far, I've learned some great things, or relearned some things I'd forgotten over the decades).

I love this stitch it feels thicker than just a regular hdc. I love this pattern. My granddaughter and daughters have asked for scarves for Christmas this year. This is a great pattern. I love the fpdc and bpdc. I use that a lot for my hats.

Why do not count your turning chain as the first double crochet? I've always been taught that the turning chain counts as your first DC, or your first stitch. Also, what brand of hook are you using? I really like the pointed end.
