Half-Life 2: Assault on Nova Prospekt [Hard]

Gordon Freeman assaults Nova Prospekt, a Combine high security prison, from the beach to rescue Eli Vance, with the help of some loyal and deadly Antlions.
Half-Life 2 is still the king of pacing and badass setpieces. This raid on Nova Prospekt at the end of Sandtraps is probably one of my favorites, just because Gordon is finally taking the fight to the Combine, rather than running away from them. The Antlions are actually quite useful, and I tried to let them do most of the fighting.
The gameplay is actually from a mod for HL2 called Half-Life 2: Update. Developed by Filip Victor, the mod offers subtle but appreciated lighting improvements and bug fixes.
The score is by Kelly Bailey. In order of appearance, the songs are:
- Apprehension and Evasion
- Highway 17

Until this moment, Gordon was on the run. This is where the table turns, when Gordon assaults the notorious Nova Prospekt. This assault was what signaled the resistance to rise up.

The fact that Apprehension and Evasion played just fueled the notion that Gordon is now on the offensive as well. Great pacing!

It makes me wonder what Ross is going to do for this section in Freeman's Mind, will he go on a power trip with his newfound army and shred through them or will he just be hugging behind cover the entire time scared to poke sitelines with the turrets

When you finally get inside the beast, nova Prospekt plays cueing when Gordon realizes just what he has done. The nova prospekt facility is so important the soldiers there have a completely different uniforms. If Gordon destroys it, the combine will be flapping about it. But that means it won't go down easy...

The first time the soundtrack "Apprehension and evasion" plays, you are running from CPs. You have notiing but a crowbar and they have guns and squads. They aim like kindergarteners, or course, but that doesn't make them any less interrogative. The second time that soundtrack plays, you have an army of antlions, and a lot of artillery. You are not running; they are. The Combine brought out their biggest armies, overwatch and many helicopters, but that means nothing. You do not apprehend nor evade Freeman. He apprehends you. He has no evading to do, but you do.

Highway 17 to entanglement are my favorite chapters. And i love this part, Apprehension and Evasion sounds so epic while attackig the bunkers with antlions

Imagine the guy you're hunting down coming to _your_ prison "Is he turning himself in?" He turns off the thumpers, the only things keeping the Antlions away "Wow, he must be pretty dumb." He throws something at you. It smells awful. Flies swarm you, and so do the Antlions. You come to realize that he has an army now. You're fucked.

Just played this with MMod, it's so much fun to rip those gun turrets off their stations so you can carry it around. You feel pretty much unstoppable whenever you use it.

@@Sexy_Nutella I love that you can change the weapons from heat-scanning to projectile-based like in Doom, it gives you a reason to stay mobile and flank the enemies. Though I do hope in future updates they give the Combine a new animation for when they're about to fire SMG grenades because you don't really get much of a warning until they actually hit you with it.

This nails the feeling of taking the fight to the Combine perfectly! Still waiting for the HL2 Remastered Collection to finally get a Steam release since that is basically Half-Life 2 Update but for Episodes One and Two as well.

At this point, and with the success of recent remakes (Dead Space, Resident Evil 2), I'm all in for HL2 getting a proper remake as well. Though I am eagerly looking forward to HL2 Remastered

@@Sexy_Nutella nah, Half-Life 2 doesn't need a remake. I think it's fine how it is....unless you play with Mmod installed then it feels like the definitive way to play Half-Life 2 and it's Episodes. Also, the antenna with the red lights used for the alarms in the watch towers remind me of the Xen alarm rods from Half-Life 1 when you encounter Vortigaunts at the mining outpost with two AGrunts watching over them during the Interloper chapter.

I loved the entire Nova prospket arc. Well, the turret standoffs lost their novelty after the first few times, but the rest of the maps are great :)

The Combine are very predictable and I'd say it's really easy to kill them, compared to HL1's HECU grunts. They are also more aggressive, for better or worse. Makes the shotgunners scary but also kind of silly when they run up to you with no cover. I'd say overall I don't hate it, it gets the job done and lets you feel like the ultimate badass.

gunships can shoot your rockets down, maybe try swirling and maneuvering your rpgs around in a different way

Should try mmod hard mode (half life mmod hard mode has combine soldiers shoot smg grenades and ar2 balls, and turn on the more accurate combine soldiers setting, it is really f-ing hard.)

On paper this part of yhe game is awesome, in actually gameplay - I found it incredibly frustrating at times. Using the ant lions as meat shields and allies is awesome! But they tend to get in the way. I stopped playing about half way through Nova Prospect because I got lost and it got boring.

Probably not anytime soon. Story-wise it covers the same ground as HL2.

@@Sexy_Nutella but there are some additions, like combine soldiers not being able to use ar2 orbs in addition to elites, you can use iron sights (thought it's more of a zoom than traditional iron sights but still), and even flash light power being seperate form AUX power like in episode 2
