G-Man knew what the extra payload that was inside Magnussen's rocket payload was, (Lamarr, seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9WHPGMB0RBo.html ) and checked off the list that would have found that stashed payload (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VIdjTtC751Q.html). Magnussen didn't do that because one of the notes written within was something Magnussen admitted was plainly illogical; Magnussen never admits HE is illogical. Lamarr is one of the few entities that have ever been teleported by Kleiner, and happens to weigh about 8.5 pounds, mentioned in the following scene at the top of the elevator. He supplied the crystal, forged it's statistics, ensured it's test proceeded regardless of warnings given by the scientists, and ensured that only the RIGHT man in the wrong place makes any difference, guiding people like Shephard and Freeman around; ensuring they don't meet. That payload will attract a second interdimensional empire, who are the G-Man's employers, are also seeking the same teleportation technology created by Black Mesa and Aperture Science, and are at war with the Combine, as demonstrated by the imprisonment of one of their agents. The next Half-Life title (in VR) will feature you playing as a vortigaunt in Xen during Gordon's time in Black Mesa, during which time you will learn -more- frustratingly little about the G-Man's origins, and will end with a cliffhanger revealing the enemy of HL3 (One interdimensional empire in all-out war with another interdimensional empire with Earth as the battlefield; which will take place directly after Eli's "death" (which happened minutes after the detonation). In this vortigaunt title, you will see and interact with your favorite aliens from HL1 mysteriously absent from HL2 AND Alyx; Snarks, Houndeyes (which you can control like antlions), Gonarchs, Grunts, and Boids. Remember that the resonance cascade in HL1 took hours or more until the Combine made it to Earth. Notice how, not once, did you see any of the Combine soldiers throughout your entire time on Xen in HL1, yet it was immediately declared taken over by the G-Man by his employers (who clearly aren't the Combine, proven by the events of HL: Alyx), with the US military and Black Mesa defeated, but then the portal to Xen was shut down with the destruction of Black Mesa by the US military. Notice how many of the creatures in Xen aren't encountered on Earth. The Combine found one source of the resonance cascade (Earth); G-Man's Empire found the other (Xen). Ironically, this empire might have prevented the Seven Hour War, and instead will cause a second one that puts the first one to shame; with both the Combine's presence in the dimension weakened, and their link to extra-dimensional reinforcements cut off, AND with humanity just barely surviving against that empire's onslaught; the sense of desperation in this new VR game (Valve won't be going back to PC, this is what brought them back to HL) should be unrivaled. This speech alludes to a future Half-Life spin-off game (Blue Shift, Alyx, etc) where you play as a vortigaunt, specifically in Xen, the borderworld. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t_2hzJq9bws.html The vortigaunts in general are aware of Freeman's lack of control, and can clearly see he's being controlled by someone else (you, the player): "Your bright face obscures your darker mask" "Far distant eyes look out through yours" "How many are there in you?" "Could you but see the eyes inside your own, the minds in your mind" They even seem to be aware of their existence inside the game. "Something secret steers us both" "What seems to you a sacrifice is merely, to us, an oscillation. We do not fear the interval of darkness (dying and loading saves)" Given their subtle 4th wall breaks, I would say it is not unreasonable to assume these quotes insinuate that the vortigaunts will at some point become the player. "We are coterminous" "For a brief time, you joined us, between the worlds (Xen)" "We are you, Freeman, and you are us"
