How is the answer not 7.5 this makes no sense.

I would be very worried about a neighbor who leaves 60 lb of such an intensely radioactive material in my garage! It is simpler to use the exponential function ln(48/60)=e^-kt. The decay constant k (or lambda) = ln(2)/T­½ Rearranging and substituting, this is T½ = -3*ln(2)/ln(0.8) = 9.32 years.

How long does the plutonium-239 have to be stored as nuclear waste before it is considered safe to handle? (Answer - 240 000 years)
