Half price domains forever - how to transfer domains to Cloudflare 

How's it been going for you so far?

Went with GoDaddy. Cloudflare makes me use their NS service which was a curse and blessing at the same time. I use pfsense, haproxy with stick tables and a bloat load of wan rules. Cloudflare has WAF rules which are nice but I already have what I need with pfsense. Pfsense users don't really need to pay additional funds for basic firewall rules. So I use their proxied IPS into my WAN rules along with my alias wan static IP. I was able to let cloudflare take the initial equipment hit from non usa IPS. All while increasing my throughput of my own hardware. System it guys will definitely use both because what happens when you're not on premise and in the cloud. So cloudflare got a lock on this market but good it guys can somewhat escape the added fees. I like it but when you do this everyday you become a security guard for each IP block. Keep this in mind if you put your domains here with cloudflare you will have no choice but to change NS unless you pay. On the flip side I can have my domains at ho'daddy but still use their NS.

Hi Vivek, you are correct in everything you mentioned here. To transfer a domain to Cloudflare, you first need to add DNS from Cloudflare to the domain by pointing the Nameservers to CF from your original registrar. When you register a domain directly with Cloudflare, you don't need to do the Nameservers step. Gregg

I'm not sure they will offer actual servers, but it's possible. They would be getting on board competing with Digital Ocean, Vultr, Linode, Google Cloud, OVH, Hetzner, UpCloud, etc. I'm not sure they are going to do that.

Hi Yassin, No, that will not change anything in your DNS, so your email will still be pointed correctly to Zoho. And the Zoho account wouldn't be deleted, even if you did change your DNS. You want to make sure the DNS records that Cloudflare is using still has MX records pointed to Zoho.

You can successfully transfer within just one day, depending on your domain registrar. To be safe, I like to leave several days up to more than a week. Be careful about making changes to the domain at the original registrar, which would lock your domain fro 60 days and disable the ability to transfer ownership during that time. (like changing contact info.)

@@tonybp No, changing auto-renewal doesn't lock the domain. Also, "unlocking" the domain to enable transfer also does not lock the domain.

No. You do just the nameservers part and now you have all the benefits that cloudflare has to offer, like DDOS protection. This works by keeping godaddy as your registrar(transferring will make cloudflare your registrar), and cloudflare your DNS provider.

That's right - you aren't required to transfer domains to use Cloudflare free - but if you do, you can pay less than any other registrar I've seen.
